Just a FYI, Big Lots has large pouches of Bear Creek soup mix for only $3 each. There's also a 20% coupon (expires today), which would make these only $2.40 each. Coupon here: http://www.biglots.com/coupon_20110122_rewards/index.html?

All you have to add to most of the flavors is water, and it makes a 1/2 gallon of soup. Just simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, and it's ready to eat. So far we've tried the Tortilla Soup, and Navy Bean Soup. It is very tasty. Yesterday, DH and DS told me the Navy Bean soup was the best soup I had ever made. (They thought it was from scratch.)

Besides the flavors I mentioned, they also had Creamy Potato Soup, Darned Good Chili, Cheddar Broccoli, Chicken Noodle, Minestrone, Cheddar Potato, Vegetable Beef, and Creamy Wild Rice. I went back today and stocked up on them since we like the soup so much.

BTW, these are high in sodium, in case you're on a sodium restricted diet.

These soups are pretty good if you just want a quick fix one instead of making homemade. Unfortunately my BL only has the Navy Bean, but my grocery store had them on sale 2 for $5 last week so grabbed some there anyway.

I found 21 pk cases of Horizon chocolate milk breakerz boxes for $7 so $5.60 with the coupon. I grabbed the 3 that they had.

I've never been able to find these at a regular grocery store, but I usually only shop at Aldi's and Super Walmart. I bought about 40 pouches of it today since the expiration date was so far out, so I have enough for awhile. :)

Big Lots always has the most interesting grocery products.

Especially cheesy potato & potato.
They HATED the chicken noodle, though.

We liked the chicken noodle, but I used it more as a base since I added some chicken, carrots, and celery.

I used the Darn Good chili mix yesterday, and it is awesome. I used it as a base, and added my own meat, tomatoes, etc.

Us too! That is our fave flavor! We usually get ours at the Christmas Tree Shop for $3, but they haven't had the cheesy potato in forever! Just the cheezy broccoli one - yuk!

That's one thing I like about Big Lots...products you won't usually find elsewhere or stuff that you bought in a regular store that doesn't carry them anymore. (Yes, I realize they're "discontinued" but as long as the date is good I have no problem buying them!)

A few years ago, we met one of the Bear Creek reps at a NASCAR race. He was giving out samples and we tried the Broccoli Cheese soup (which was really good). He told us that if you added chopped broccoli to it and reduced the added water by about one cup, it makes the best baked potato topping. It's really good that way....but I confess that even when I make it as soup, I add some chopped broccoli. A bowl of that and a slice of garlic bread makes a really great winter meal.

ps... to the original poster...thanks for the heads up on the soup being in the store...I was able to score a few bags. :)

Actually, I'm fairly certain that this soup isn't discontinued. Big Lots gets various foods that are current. For example, I recently got a double sized box (50 oz?) of Cheerios for only $4 and the expiration date is several months away. Another example is B&M Baked Beans. A large can was $1. The label had an advertisement for Six Flags on it, which is why I assume Big Lots got them. The expiration date was sometime in 2012 though.

Yum, that sounds good, I'll have to try it. I got some of that flavor when I stocked up the other day.

Here is how I made the chili recently (used the bagged mix as a base), and my family loved it.

2 lbs of ground sirloin (90% lean)
1 lbs of ground venison (or substitute more ground beef)
1 large sweet onion, chopped
2 large green peppers, chopped
5 or 6 heaping teaspoons of fresh minced garlic (I use the fresh jarred garlic)

Toss all of the above in a large skillet, and cook over medium heat until meat is done. Drain any grease and sit aside.

In a large pot, add 14 cups of water. Bring to a boil.

Whisk in 2 bags of Darn Good Chili Mix, and 2 cans of tomato paste. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes.

After 15 minutes, add:
15 oz can dark red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
15 oz can light red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
28 oz can of diced tomatos
28 oz can of Rotel tomatoes
Meat mixture

Stir together and continue to simmer for another 20 minutes, stirring every couple of minutes.

This makes a lot of chili. My 8 1/2 quart pot was nearly full. I always make extra chili so I can freeze part of it for a future meal.
