Anyone else going to watch Chasing Mummies on History Channel tomorrow (7/14) night?

I'm excited and can't wait. :goodvibes

I'm so obsessed with mummies and ancient Egypt, so I probably will watch it. However, I saw a preview and Dr. Hawass seemed a little..."wooden," I think. Seemed like he was acting :confused3

He has got to be the king of self promoters (even better than LeBron). I wonder how much money he makes by shaking down anyone wanting to dig in Egypt. Plus it seems like he is the public face of any new discovery in Egypt.

I'm be sure to watch tonight and my wife will roll her eyes over ANOTHER program about Egypt.

Looks AWESOME!!!

Stuck
Premiere Date: 07/14/2010
Zahi is supervising the restoration of the Step Pyramid, the oldest pyramid in Egypt. It's there that we meet the new members of his fellowship program: Late to show up, Lindsay nearly loses her job before it actually begins! Meanwhile, Fellowship Coordinator Dr. Allan Morton realizes the erroneous assignment of Zoe to the program. Allan gets an earful from Zahi for his mistake before Zoe begs him for the chance to go inside the Step Pyramid for some photos...after all, she's traveled so far! Zoe goes deep inside the bowels of the pyramid with a cameraman, then gets stuck and locked inside. Zahi races back to Saqqara to open up the pyramid and save them both.

While I like him - just for the fact that he usually gets all excited over everything - I do wonder if he stages a lot of these "discoveries." I remember seeing a news program some years back - upon the discovery of the golden mummies, or maybe it was Hatshepsut; I don't remember - in which a reporter asked him a question, and he got mad and stomped off, refusing to return. I've questioned a lot since then.

I'm happy to see I'm not the only one practically obsessed with anything Ancient Egypt.

Dr Hawass does seem a bit of a jerk sometimes, but he does hold quite a bit of power in Egypt. So that is pretty much a given.

It's on my list of things to watch. I like anything that deals with history and archaeology.

Me too. I briefly thought about going into archaeology when I was in college. Same with Egyptology. But I'll admit I'm a coward and couldn't really do that myself. ;)

So, 15 minutes in...this is a mockumentary, right? Wish I'd read more about it when I saw the first ad.

I thought it was interesting. I guess a nice way to describe Dr. Hawass would be "intense" as opposed to "very difficult." I was initially put off with his attitude, but as the show progressed he was obviously right in every respect, albeit a bit short-tempered. I can't say I blame him given the idiocy of the Hollywood filmmaker, though.

The bottom line is that we get to see some really interesting stuff.

darn, i missed it! :( i do think zahi hawass is kind of pompous, but he has a very strong media presence, and i do believe that is helpful to the egyptian government. any interview he gives and any discoveries he supervises can mean more tourists to egypt, meaning more money. my BIL is egyptian, and i hope to be able to travel there with him as my guide some day. i LOVE archaeological shows, and anything about egypt.

ok, I had reallyhigh hopes for this.

it is reallly hard getting through this episode, there is no way this is a live reality program. NO ONE talks like that in real life.

wow this is really bad.I'll give it a couple episodes,, but ooo the 'acting' is just making this bad to watch.

After the "show me the mummy" quote in his promo, we will watch the Smithsonian.

of course all of that is scripted and staged. it just seems like bad production.

I don't get it.

But I think it does show that Hawass is a major A. I definitely believe he treats people like trash - that is how glorified academics act.

Why wasn't Zoe part of the late night dig?

I agree. He seems really short tempered. But when people's lives are at stake, I can understand it.

Personally, I thought it's a bit rough and not as "polished" as other reality shows, but I'm not really watching it for the entertainment value.

I was so disappointed with that show! I am a huge Egyptology freak and was really looking forward to it.

The whole show seemed so STAGED! Zoe is so darn fake. And that Dr that left her ALONE to do what she wanted in a pyramid??? Yeah, I don't think so. ACTRESS!

And then when Zoe was found....of course it is Dr Hawass that finds her.

IMO: fake, fake, fake, fake, fake!

Like other "reality" shows aren't staged at all?

As I said, this one isn't as polished as other reality shows. Also, with the nature of this show, I expect quite a bit will be staged. Archeology isn't always exciting. Most of the time, it's about finding nothing. That wouldn't go over too well either. Anyone remember Geraldo?

Oh my ... we went out last night and got in late. It is on my dvr ... YIKES, by the sound of this thread ... it does not seem appealing at all BUT you actually all have me curious ... so I will still watch it! :lmao:

It seemed like this episode was designed to make Hawass appear to be a Major A. In my opinion, it was in no way flattering to Hawass. He was a jerk.

Wonder if Hawass had any editing oversight. Doesn't seem like he did.
