Changing Delta flight to April 16..is this date strike free date?

Car rental companies are now in a time frame where they are moving their stock. (From 'snow bird' season to family travel season/south to north)

I just received an email from Avis announcing special one way fares from either Arizona, or Florida to points north. There doesn't appear to be any additional "zone fee" during this time frame. For more info check this link http://avis.com/AvisWeb/JSP/US/en/deals/onewayfl06.jsp?IID=DL_oneway_florida:

This is a good thing for some lucky people, however, if Avis has 1000 cars in Orlando, they aren't going to allow 800 of them to travel north. My guess is that only 200, maybe 300 of them will be released without a zone fee from the half dozen major rental agencies in the area. That's only 1200-1800 cars headed north, and if you've got 30,000 stranded travelers in the first few days after the strike, simple logic proves that they will quickly be gone.

If I were in the position of many, I'd be either buying a refundable one way ticket home now, two or three weeks out while the prices are half of what they will be, or reserving a rental car now and cancelling it if you don't need it--even if it means eating a small cancellation fee.

Can I just ask this simple question if anyone can help? We are flying Delta tomorrow 4/8 to Vegas and coming home 4/11. Can I assume we're safe? I do have the numbers of all the other carriers that also fly our route and will keep a close eye on the news, but all signs point to 4/16, 4/17 for anything with the strike and I just want to know FOR SURE if 4/11 is in the clear. Thank you!

From what I've been reading, you are in the clear. The union authorized a date to strike, if they do strike, for anytime AFTER April 17.

Have a great trip and don't worry. They won't strike early.... (they won't make a deal until the midnight on the last night either....)

Anne speaks the truth - don't read it as negativity. She is trying to prepare everyone for the reality that all business travelers know firsthand. You can NEVER have too many backup plans. Prepare yourself for the worst then if everything works out fine with Delta then simply cancel the extra reservations and count yourself lucky.

I fly today and back on the 15th. I'm not worried about those flights but I am concerned that my May and June commute to Nashville and my biz trips to NY and Vegas will be kaput if Delta goes under.

Good luck to everyone. Let's hope that the union and management can come to a mutual agreement and save the company, the employee's jobs and all of the business and leisure travelers flights.

A BIG thank you to Plutospup for the AVIS drive out rate tip. We are flying Delta out of Chicago to Miami on April 17th (hopefully!) Our return flight is 4/23-after the projected strike date. I was trying to decide what to do for a plan B in case we couldn't get a flight out. Thanks to Plutospup's tip I was able to secure a 2 day mini-van rental MIA to MDW for only $54.13 total with tax+fees. Lord knows we don't want to drive all that way, but if we can't get a flight out we need to get home somehow. Now we just could use a little pixie dust for our 18 yr. old daughter who is flying out 4/19 to meet us there. ARRRGH! Seems like everytime we go on vacation we have complications of some sort. Things always seem to work out in the end though. BTW-I really feel for EVERYONE affected by this situation. We all just need to keep trying to help eachother with as much information as possible so people can make informed decisions. THANKS TO ALL AT THE DIS! :thumbsup2

Glad that you were able to get a great rate for your "backup plan".

With any luck, there won't be a pilots strike  , and nobody will need a plan "B".

PlutosPup-Your link to Avis made me feel so much better. I was able to secure a one-way mini-van rental from MCO to Kansas City for $47.26 on May 6th. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hoping I'll be at the Hoop-de-Doo on April 28th as planned,

Amy
