Changes to the Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom

When I was there at the end of January (a few weeks ago), you had to scan your band at the portal it told you to go to the last time you played, before they would give you a new pack of cards.

So say I played on Friday and it told me to look for the star portal but I was done playing for the day.

On Saturday, I would have to scan my band at the star portal before I could get a new pack of cards.

That's what I did last trip. I would play then leave, then the next day I would pick up a pack, play, leave then the next day I'd stop and get my pack and play, then leave.....etc.

I know where the last place I played and the last place it told me to go was so I'll go there first (with my old band) then on my way out I'll pick up a new pack and have them change my key to my new band.

I was under the impression you had to play the correct portal for where you are in the game, which is frequently Adventureland and Liberty Square. How do you play a portal on Main Street if that's not the next one in your game?

You only have to OPEN a portal (any one) and then you are eligible for a new spell pack that day. When you get your new spell pack, we can see where the next portal on your game is.

I haven't worked SOMK since November but there haven't been any training updates for the last 10 months or so, so should still be the same. I'll be there on Tuesday so will double check for sure.

You may be correct. There have been some changes over the years and some times it is hard to remember which rules are being used. I know in the past it was any portal.

Ok if I haven't been in a year and half will I be able to go to the firehouse our 1st day and get new cards?

Unless you're starting fresh (not the old game), I don't think you can start at firehouse. We had an old game (which still worked, thankfully) and went to Liberty Square sorcerers and waited in a long line before going to any portals (like I was going to remember what portal we were at from 1 1/2 years ago!). They told me where to go (in Adventureland) and sent me away with no cards. I was not happy to have to backtrack later, especially after waiting in a long line.

Now, could I have done it by just swiping the card at any random portal first? Sounds like maybe yes. They told me specifically to go to the next portal in the game. But given everything else I've read in this thread I might have been able to go to any portal nearby and come back quickly. Your guess is as good as mine on that point. But they definitely didn't give me cards.

On the plus side, the hard level game my son had been working on for years was still there. I thought it would be purged after a year, but this was about 1 1/2 years and it was still there. So yay on that point!

Can we use our magic bands now at the portals? I'm not sure we still have the card with the key.

Yep that's now the preferred way, but if you don't have your key card to activate the game you will "likely" have to start over. Sometimes if you have one of the older cards, the game can be accessed and a new key assigned but not often.

Question: We wanted to start playing during our last vacation. We picked up our cards, but were never able to use them due to full parks at the time. It will be another year until we come again. When we make our next reservation and order new tickets, will they "remember" that our previous cards were not used? My guess is that our girls are going to want to play next time, and I dont know where our cards went....

We haven't been to wdw since 2012. So I'm assuming we need to start over, correct? Are the previous "key" cards we have useless now?

Just start a new game

You could bring them to "try" but games only go back about 18 months at best normally.

We used to be able to open ANY portal for it to count, but lately we have been sent away and told to go to our current portal.

Our last trip to WDW was in Nov 2013 so I think our key card is no longer working. I don't think my boys will notice if they have to start over. I am wondering though if our play cards from back then can still be used? We have a huge stack, even some special ones (Halloween and Christmas 2012 and 2013).... can we bring them to play or do we have to start out with a new pack?

In no way will I argue what the "official" procedure is, but like others have said, we would pick our cards up in the morning, play, leave at the end of the day, and have no problem picking up our new set first thing the next morning. We've done this every trip since the game started, including for 5 days in the MK last August, and have never been sent to open a portal first. Maybe just lucky we get nice CM's, but that is how it has worked for us every time!

As of Feb. 15, 2016, you have to open your "next" portal to get a new Spell Pack. If you don't remember where your next portal is, go to the Fire House and scan your ticket media.
