Changes to Land Border Entry for Canadians with Positive Test

I wouldn’t be in another country if I could drive my own car home. I would be isolating in the home I own, in the country I’m a citizen of. And it’s very easy for some .. just not people without the means to pay $5000 fines.

They need to provide clarification at the very least. When and how will it be applied? None of us should be ok with the wording changing like that with no explantation. At best it’s arbitrary.. but we are now talking about fining citizens for getting sick while travelling. If they want to ban travel, go for it and deal with the fallout.

ETA) I think it’s important to point out I don’t even want to travel at the moment. I am objecting to sweeping changes that restrict movement with absolutely no notice or explanation.

The fine was actually already a possibility, just the language about it was buried. They have now made it much more up front. The fact that one could be fined for not having a negative test is not new.

We shouldn’t have to guess, we should know.
They clearly state

To avoid being fined, wait to enter Canada until the 11th after your positive test result. If you had symptoms without a positive result, wait until the symptoms have ended and you have a valid negative pre-entry test result.

Someone had to go find that info…..it wasn’t made obvious or clear prior to now, it was recently changed, and that‘s concerning to me. It’s also concerning to me that if I’m at home I only have to isolate five days, but if I’m somewhere else it’s 10. It’s needlessly confusing. I get that you are ok with it, I am not . Perhaps we can agree to disagree.

I'm not ok with it but I'm also not traveling any time soon.

My major concern is that this sets a precedent for fineing Canadian citizens and permanently residents for legally entering the country if an arbitrary set of conditions aren't met. Sure, right now it's COVID, but in theory they could change it to basically anything. Should you have to show up with a test to prove your Cancer free? HIV free? Any communicable disease free? All impact the health care system.

It's not like preventing Canadians from entering the country will limit the spread anymore so what exactly is the point?

This is my problem with it, this is a preventive measure. Maybe it would have worked to slow the spread 2 months ago. But it's ridiculous now. The variant is here, spreading, making ppl wait 11 days to go home does not change that fact. Specially because isolating in a hotel vs at home is still isolating.

They clearly state that it's not clear.

"Honey, I will be perfectly clear; I may love you."
I get it. The whole "may be fined" isn't clear. They have used that language all along for most laws.

It has nothing to do with limiting the spread and more to do with hospitalizations.

It is clear. They have used the "may be fined" language for almost every law out there. It's nothing new.

I'm saying this from the government perspective It's not necessarily about the spread. Its more about keeping people out of the hospital. We are already having issues with our hospitals. It's easy to say you can isolate at home. What happens if your symptoms get worse and you need the hospital? That's I think is where the issue is.

So Canadians are supposed to go to the USA hospital instead?? Sorry fellow canadian, please go partly die in the next country over. :rolleyes2
Seriously, make it make sense.

That's what they want. With the travel advisory in place people aren't supposed to be traveling. It's there way of punishing those who choose to travel. I don't necessarily agree with it.

Some ppl don't get a choice in traveling tho. This feels like abandoning citizens and residents and it's scummy as hell. I definitely don't agree with it.

Not fighting with you btw, cause what you are saying makes sense. It's just so wrong of them.

Ok - as a logic experiment which I alluded too earlier previously replace COVID with any other disease and see if this makes any sense.

Heart disease - sorry, cardiac wing full, stay in the US.

Cancer - sorry, cancer ward is full, stay in the US.

Tuberculosis - sorry, hospitals full, stay in the US until your negative.

And so on.

This is why people are upset - we have a government that states 'a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian'; but reality it's 'a Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian unless you've traveled and have covid and we can use you to our political advantage'.
