Just curious if anyone else saw this first big Celiac convention coming to Disney and if anyone is going. I think it's great, but kind of funny that the one resort that does the worst job catering to gluten allergies is the host resort. BUT this gives me hope that CSR will improve, greatly, after this group starts coming to stay. :yay:

My sister and I are flying down for the conference. I am more excited to see and talk to the vendors, but I think the whole thing will be fun. Honestly, it was a fun excuse to take a girls only trip to WDW w/Free dining and stay at CSR because we have nervy stayed there before.:cool1:

Looks like 11/23 WDW

We're heading home 11/21. Oh well...hopefully the prep for the upcoming conference will work in our favor.

I would love to hear if you have good experience with food on property as we have had negative in the past. I would think they would be very accommodating, considering! Oh, and edited to add, it is a BEAUTIFUL resort and our family favorite for everything (except food). Have fun!

sorry you had bad experiences at that resort you can write Disney and let them know. This convention won't change anything it open to the public it not just for Disney so Disney getting paid to hold it at the resort. They fill out a different survey a resort guest would get and get asked different questions. Also don't know if any Disney Chef or anyone in food and beverage will attend. Well except one popular chef on twitter who has attended other conferences and conventions before for Disney and tweeted about it. But he works for their special events department ie weddings or parties or any other special event and is exc chef I think a higher level exc chef. As he seems to post pics of him visiting other chefs and showing off their food. But really if you had problems let Disney know they will listen and try to fix it I know if you listen to the podcast they did go during one of their seven in seven segments and was able to get special food made in the peeper market. They made special mention as that was one of the resort that handle it the best not sure if it was gluteen free sorry. Or if their ask to speak to a manager or te chef and explain what wrong with the meal and if their not being helpfully ask to speak to their food and beverage director or gm don't be afraid to nicely go up the chain. Their some stuff they might not be able to do but they should be able to make you safe food in this day and age and how many awards Disney won for being allergy friendly and gluten free.

CSR always has hosted the Children with Diabetes convention, which is held at CSR every other year. Celiac and type 1 often go hand in hand, so all the catered buffets have an entire dedicated gluten free food section (apart from the main buffet). There has never been an issue with the food.

The catering dept for a convention is a completely different department than the other food areas, even within a resort. Catering will also work closely with a group to provide exactly the food that's needed.

Part of the specific problems we have had in the past (repeatidly) is that Pepper Market is not a Disney owned restaurant, and it isn't run like the other Disney resort restaurants. I had heard talk of Disney considering to purchase this, and if they have...GREAT! Some issues come from asking to talk to a chef or a manager. We were not given help when we asked for it. We were sent to find these people on our own, go back into the cooking space/kitchen looking for them, and trying to pull them out of whatever they are in the middle of. That is not the Disney way. We have had a couple of good experiences here, but mostly bad ones. We keep going back because we LOVE CSR! But we don't spend many of our meals at the resort. We go to the other resorts, for the most part. We got pretty sick there the last time we ate. There is a lot of resistance in helping us, which is part of the problem. So, if they have a gluten free option, but no one is willing to get it/fix it, or find it...it's kind of useless.

BUT I am glad to hear about the all gluten free buffet and there are success stories. We haven't dined there in a couple of years, so I am hopeful that this upcoming trip will be better. Like I said, we keep trying :) I look forward to reviews!

Hope they fix the problem and Disney takes more control of that food court. Hope you have a great trip with no problems and all te chefs help you and make great food for you.

Just to clarify; the buffets I'm speaking about are solely within the confines of the convention areas. Many times the conventions will have their own food as part of their conventions(the CWD one does, I"m sure the Celiac one will as well) and in those situations there were separate buffets set up apart from the main buffet provided to convention guests, not the public. If you were not part of the convention, you would not have access to these foods. It had nothing to do with the main part of CSR, Pepper Market or any of the other resort areas - it was ONLY in the convention center area. Hope that clarifies.

Thanks! I'm sure it will be a great trip :)

And that makes sense about the buffet being part of the convention. I was picturing that they set up something in the market, but of course that wouldn't make as much sense for conventioners.

I forgot to add. When the CWD conference is held at CSR, all the foods that are laid out in the buffet have carb counts on them, which is what people with type 1 need in order to give insulin properly. That is because the conference people work closely with the CSR convention staff & chef to make this happen.

But, nothing has ever changed at Disney as a whole because of these conferences, which have been going on since like 1999 or so. So, I don't want to burst your bubble, but I doubt having a celiac conference will change much about how Disney, or CSR, operates with regard to Celia. Sadly.
