So we’ve been asking since day one about what a mystery it is in terms of who gets really sick from Covid and who doesn’t. Why some countries (us) get hit way harder than others (almost all of Africa).

Well...they found the explanation. And you’re not gonna like it.

88% of Covid deaths are in countries where more than half the population is obese. And in the US, 74% of all deaths are people who are obese to morbidly obese.

So...sorry. But facts, as they say, is facts.

GRRRRRR the cdc is advising against travel even when vaccinated. Isn't the point of the vaccine so we can all get back to living life? So many want to travel so once again they give us hope (yay we have a vaccine) then rip it away (but you have to stay home)

Does it say what definition they are using for obese? Is it going based on body fat % or B(S)MI? Unless you are a specific body type, it is very easy to be listed as obese through B(S)MI regardless of other measures.

True. But by any measure, we have way more than basically anywhere else.

I remember talking about this very early on....on this board I think. Italy got hit so hard because they have an older population....and we knew we'd get hit hard because we 2/3 of our population is overweight to obese.

My buddy Osterholm was all over the media saying that in another 6 to 14 weeks we will hit a record number of cases and that we are “walking past the mouth of a sleeping monster.”

My ex wife and her husband, both teachers, will be getting vaccinated this week. Our county is setting up a clinic for educators at one of the high schools. Hopefully by May it will be my turn.
Ugh, how long is he going to continue with that message? Didn’t he say 6-14 weeks we’d see a surge about a month ago? Shouldn’t the timeline be changing? What’s wrong with “keep an eye on the variants” as opposed to this doomsday prediction? I definitely am aware of them and know that we don’t know how they will affect things, but I am so tired of the constant negativity.

I’m scheduled for my second dose on 4/2. Unless things really explode, I’m going to Disney the last week of April.

Another side-effect of the extremely cautious CDC advice that I didn't think of until I heard the argument made on the radio this morning: Teachers who are refusing to return to in person classes are pointing to CDC guidelines that say fully vaccinated people should still avoid "medium to large" gatherings and continue to maintain six-foot distancing in the presence of unvaccinated people to support their position that even with the vaccine, it isn't safe to be teaching in person.

I was reading about this the other week. And yes most people won't like it. In the US we have a strange view of obesity and in that if someone can walk around a theme park, or go about there normal day with no major issue they think they are healthy and fine. I get really tired of the news articles about someone that is young and healthy that died and then show a picture of someone that is significantly overweight. This is very true about many of the teens/kids that died also.

We very successfully stigmatized smoking- you're a pariah now if you smoke. Obesity is just as dangerous and yet nothing.

Not arguing that obesity isn't dangerous but that has to do with a person's smoking affecting the health of the people around them directly, which a person's obesity does not.

We do the opposite we praise plus size models and Hollywood stars. Now I will say that there are the small percentage that have true medical conditions that make it extremely hard to lose weight and very easy to gain.

A glimmer of hope that I *may* get vaccinated today. There aren't enough mass vaccination event volunteers in my area, so they called up the Officers of Election to help (I think because we already have the criminal background checks in place). Vaccination event volunteers don't get vaccinated in my state, but if there are leftover doses at the end of the day they'll administer them to the volunteers instead of waste them. Fingers crossed that there are leftovers - at 45 years old I'm like the youngest Officer of Election we've got in my county, so most of the others would have been vaccinated in the 65+ tier! ;)

My weight fluctuates primarily because it is much easier to be fat. I will get to a medically healthy weight and my wife starts getting questioned by her friends if I am ok. A healthy weight is seen as you must have cancer or some other medical problem. People are so conditioned to seeing fat people that they associate healthy weights with unhealthy conditions.

Obesity and other underlying conditions are definitely a large part, but it still doesn’t explain the huge range in reactions. It’s not like all obese people have severe cases, and it doesn’t explain why some have such a severe systemic reaction while others barely have symptoms.

I have had this happen to me....when I was on the line of being overweight....25-26 BMI and got into a new fitness regimen and got down to a 22 BMI. I had so many people ask me if I was ok.

However, I will say this....as someone who has had my weight fluctuate from time to time in my life......the conversation of obesity/overweight vs. smoking has occurred about a zillion times on this board, and it usually doesn't end well. And....most of the people on this thread are likely not where they'd like to be weight-wise, and so it's mostly just going to make people feel badly. Just my opinion.
