CDC Notifies States, Large Cities To Prepare For Vaccine Distribution As Soon As Late October

And some of the doomsayers may be right from time to time. But keep in mind how many worst-case scenarios since the start of this *haven't* panned out. They outnumber those that have.
I remember all the discussion about states reopening too quickly, states on the naughty list, states on the good list, this leader and that leader, etc. And it played out so much in the news how one state was compared to another and usually with such a high level overview in an article you never really got the accurate picture.

While I think there are points to certain ways one state handle the pandemic over another when you look at the situation as a whole there was much more blurring of the lines when it came to COVID cases. By that I mean stricter than strict didn't always correlate to low cases and freeer than free didn't always correlate to high cases. Many factors played a role and a good amount of states sorta ended up around the same regardless of their path.

You're also seeing how the vaccine distribution is working out. Some of those naughty states...aren't doing too shabby at getting their population protected and some of those good states are struggling. Also due to many factors.

There just was a lot of focus on such extremes for so long in terms of the responses and choices it muddied the waters

We talked about that on this thread a week ago. I'm happy to hear Fauci bringing it up because I don't think it has gotten nearly enough public attention. The whole doom-and-gloom "this is going to be like the flu, we'll need the shot every year and will still have outbreaks" assumes a fairly high rate of mutation. But this virus still appears much more stable than the flu, which reduces the odds of that frequency of meaningful mutation in a scenario of vaccine-limited numbers of cases. If we can get/keep case numbers low, we can slash the odds of needing frequent updates or boosters to the vaccine.

Sorry if I missed that convo- I was very likely in the cool down corner.

I was speaking to that poster in generalities.

And yes, a lot of it is clicks/ratings. They give an eye-catching headline to get you to read and then when you read the article, in a lot of cases (not all), the headline is actually quite misleading.
This exactly. The thing I’m getting really tired of are the stories that tout a percentage of the public that either wants or doesn’t want something, but when you stop and think for a second, usually the percentage they’re quoting is the minority percentage. Like a story saying 40% of Americans don’t want the vaccine...ok, that means 60% do. I’ve seen so many more of these type of headlines in the past couple of years. Very annoying.

I'd recommend signing up for both appointments- get the work appointment and attempt to get your follow up with the state. If you can, get the second Pfizer dose. But if not, getting the Moderna is WAY better than getting nothing. In fact, some of the research suggests that one of each might be slightly more effective.

Just got further clarification from work... they will not let folks who had Pfizer already get the Moderna.

I don't know what state you are in but in NY the second doses are guaranteed. We were required to signup for our second dose while waiting the 15 minutes after getting the first one. I would contact where you received the first one and find out how to make your appointment for the second one.

Arizona, and there are no guarantees here. The site says there are NO appointments available for February and March.

So, in our county, once you have received one shot, you are automatically scheduled for your second. However, in some cases, people miss their second appointment or something else happens and they can't get scheduled, but if they show up 3 weeks later at the place they got the first one , they are prioritized ahead of people there for their first shots. Maybe just try going back in 3 weeks with your card.

I would not mix and match vaccines. It's not recommended and the timeline for the 2 different vaccines between doses is different.

Don't skip the second dose, but also know that you can go an additional 2 weeks before getting your second Pfizer shot.

At the moment nothing available in Arizona for February or March.

I wouldn't mix and match either. The C.D.C says that one can do so in "extraordinary situations". But there is no data on this yet. It has not been studied. But at least early on, I can see this being an issue for some people. I'm thinking the J&J vaccine is going to make things easier on people.

I shan't have a choice as work has said they won't allow folks who've already Pfizer to get the Moderna.

I guess I will just wait and see if anything opens for second doses!

Thanks, all, for your thoughts.

Some good news about the B.1.1.7 (UK) variant. While it is more transmissible, it is not more severe.

“We found no evidence for changes in reported symptoms, disease severity and disease duration associated with B.1.1.7. We found a likely reinfection rate of around 0.7% (95% CI 0.6-0.8), but no evidence that this was higher compared to older strains. We found an increase in R(t) by a factor of 1.35 (95% CI 1.02-1.69)."

That is interesting because my aunt and her husband are in Arizona and they made an appointment on line for the second shot. Her husband did it through an email link sent to him. They were not able to get it on the same day but my aunt is going to accompany her husband to his appointment on Saturday and see if they will give her the shot then rather than having to come back on Sunday. They did there stuff at the stadium in Phoenix.

This was an interesting read. India’s cases have plummeted and they have no real idea why.
https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsa...e-mystery-of-indias-plummeting-covid-19-cases

This is a great read. I have watched India since the beginning of the pandemic and have wondered why their numbers stayed so low compared to their population and crowded cities. The ideas while interesting are not repeated in Brazil so I would guess that the masking may have made a difference in India. The death rate for India is not accurate though. I remember reading a story that less than 40% of any deaths in India are classified so they probably have many more deaths that were not classified. But very interesting and just shows that we still have no idea why numbers are what they are.

New discussion on this morning's new about priority being giving the first dose to as many as possible. For States No more holding back the second dose.

There is growing concern about the new variants. They are continuing to evolve and form worrisome mutations that may evade vaccines. I guess the thinking is that we need to get a level of immunity in as many people as possible to slow this down before it takes hold.

I hope my state gets the memo. Right now they are keeping over half of their available doses in storage.
They are pretty much done vaccinating health workers and nursing home patients. They began yesterday with shots for folks over 80. No idea when they will get to 65 and over.

Is this new news from today? As in they discovered something else?

The article I posted is from the NYT today and is referring to a mutation within the U.K. variant that is concerning....and that Moderna and other companies are already preparing vaccines in response to this particular mutation. That's the first I've seen this reported. Previously, we'd heard that all of the vaccines were effective against the U.K. variant. So yes, this is new.
