skohrs, as the DIS is a discussion board and people are discussing the subject, expressing opinions and they will obviously differ given the age, location, personal thoughts, asking how to secure items of value.... :confused3

Not sure why you feel it should be shut down as any opinions on here and the reports are just that, and nothing more or less than has been publicized and discussed on national TV and news websites that allow people to comment?

I think it's a topic that's totally worthy of disboards too -- it happened on a disney ship, there are some interesting pictures of places we don't usually get to see in the facebook links, and it's a modest look at the lives of cast members and stuff they find themselves involved in.

But it probably will and probably should get closed, since we can't seem to control ourselves.

Why say "we" when you truly aren't including yourself in that?? :confused3

Drives me nuts when people ask for a thread to be closed down. If you see something in a thread that's against the DIS rules, then you can report it, but just not liking the topic isn't reason enough.

And so far, no one has broken any of the DIS guidelines in order to have the thread shut down.........

I think it's also interesting and informative to hear how DCL are playing this out.
After all "an" employee (yet to be identified) has been found to be in possession of the stolen iPhone.
I hope the owner posts on her FB page to let people know if she does get it back (and I don't think she deserves any monetary comp or free WDW tickets) but if DCL do offer that as a goodwill gesture, I wouldn't see any harm in it for PR purposes.

Actually, my post is off topic, so I was deliberately including myself. I think my post (and this one) are probably reportable. And if I get in trouble with a mod, I can't say I didn't earn it.

But I don't want the thread shut down. That's my point. I don't want to report anybody's post, though there are a half dozen that could be reported. I think it's a good thread and a funny topic that doesn't need the boiling blood, which eventually will get it shut down if history is any precedent.

As long as the thread stays ON TOPIC, no one gets nasty or snarky, and everyone remains civil we can leave this thread open for now. But we don't want to hang someone without all the facts.

Saying the thread should be closed or should remain open are off topic and any more posts on that topic will be deleted.

So back on topic, a CM has "acquired" a iPhone owned by a Guest (as per reports) and some CM has been using it to take photo's of a Crew Member who wears a DCL name tag of Nelson.

DCL are investigating the situation, put "A" Crew Member on administrative leave until the investigation is completed, taken the iPhone into their custody to return it to the owner.

And hopefully she will get her phone back! (to retrieve any content on it and return it to the cell phone company/insurance company if it were insured and replaced)

Hopefully DCL will release another statement to clarify how they have dealt with this theft that someone can post, to put other Guests minds at ease about sticky fingered Maintenance Crew and all of the other honest Crew!
Also that other DIS members can ask about how to secure items on the ship, and off the ship on the islands! :thumbsup2

That's the best rundown I've seen of this entire incident.

I'm wondering if the phone was actually stolen or if the guest left it on a table or lost it somewhere and it was found by a CM and not turned into Lost & Found?!? :confused3

If a Guest or CM finds a Guest or CM's belong's on the ship, both should hand them in at GS to be put in the Lost and Found IMO.

Anyone who considers the item to be their's as they found it (finders keepers, losers weapers ) is a thief IMO.

Having lost over $800 on the ship when my wallet fell out of my shorts (drivers license, CC's etc, in a Crew area, I know how it feels to be stung by a CM, and someone without a conscience or morals.

I don't think any of us will get through life without something like this happening to us at least once.
It's a horrible feeling.
I was surprised it happened....but I also thought that the way the girl handled it was kind of funny.....it was like a Flat Stanley thing. And at least she wasn't being really nasty about it. At least I didn't think she was, it could have been worse.

I know that it isn't possible to lock up every single thing while we're onboard, but I do turn my phone completely off.....that's one of the nice parts of a vacation, no phone.....and lock it and my jewelry, wallet and passports in the safe. I rarely take a lap top, or any other electronics, but I do leave my cameras out so that they're handy.

All we can do is hope that we're surrounded by honest people.

One of my kids had an iPod "disappear" from our stateroom once, but because of the room we were in, and the small table they'd left it set on, anyone walking by could have easily picked it up while the host was cleaning in the bedroom. It was a larger suite, and if the door is propped open, anything on the table in the entry hall would be easy pickins'.

I totally agree! Flat Nelson! I have a squishy smilie ball that goes all around the world with me having pics taken in places like the Vatican, with Palace Guards in London, and even in war torn Iraq where Hussein would stand shooting off his guns (even won a photo contest using some of the pics!). I thought it may have been a joke like the guy would take the phone for a few hours and maybe take pics of some of the characters or things not accessible to regular cruisers, but nope. I was wrong obviously but it still kind of feels that way to me!

Hope she got her phone back even if she lost it. Maybe if she reported it lost right away they could have looked at videos to see if anyone had taken it but not turned it in when it happened?

That is possible.

I recall another poster who left their camcorder somewhere on the ship (don't recall where) and when they returned and asked about it the CM happened to know the brand of camcorder that wasn't turnned in, when the brand wasn't even mentioned.

We have a stuffed "Scoopie" doll from Culver's. It all started with the first "Double Scoop" cruise....two times stopping at Castaway Cay. Scoopie has now been all over the world, too.

His facebook page has her listed as his 'fiancee'.

Given she is in private in some of the photos and it appears they are a couple from the photos and his facebook site I think it is a reasonable assumption that she is his partner.

As far as memory cards for camera. I shoot with a Canon 50D and I go through about 100GB of photos on a vacation. In my case I cannot fit my photos on memory cards or CD's. I need to have a laptop with external drive because my laptop cannot contain all of my photos. I have a network attached storage at home I use for my photos. Yes for most cameras you can get by with a 15 dollar memory card but I have seen lots of people on cruises who have gear like mine and they need a laptop.

As far as my laptop goes I have left it out and I haven't had a problem. Most crimes are crimes of opportunity. A $600 phone is easily stashed in a pocket and the person doing the theft can walk out unnoticed. A 17 inch Macbook Pro is a little harder to be sly with. When I am in an unknown hotel on a business trip all of my small gear (iPad, phone, passport, external drives) go into the safe. My laptop goes under my clothes in a drawer or my luggage and I have never had someone steal something out of there. If you leave it out you run the risk.

How did you find his Facebook page based on just his first name? I'm sorry but I still think there is something fishy going on. There were a ton of other people in photos from this supposed iPhone. He just happened to be one with a name tag. And, she accuses someone of being a "co-captain" - there is no such thing!

People do a lot of crazy things to get attention - I think she is one of them.

I have a friend that left all of her valuables out in plain sight in MX. The maid reported it to her supervisor. The hotel told my friend that she needed to use the safe or her room would not be cleaned to avoid the maid getting accused of stealing. I love that approach. I truly think that ALL sides need to protect themselves.

If there was a disclaimer the Guest could sign to say they don't mind leaving their valuables "on show" if the thefts became so prevalent that DCL needed to, I would totally agree.

Right now, I don't think they need to.
