Cast Member Steals Phone

...Disney owes her nothing except an effort to retrieve her phone....

The only thing I'm thinking is that people on the DIS would feel very differently if this were another cruise line. From what I've seen, they'd be slamming the other cruise line left and right for hiring "less than desirable" crew members, and since it was a THEFT, they'd be demanding restitution.
From what I've seen on here in the recent past, that is.

I agree with you completely, but do not know how that is related to the part of my post that you bolded (which I quoted here).

If this were to happen in a hotel, on any cruise line, anywhere, if a member of the staff stole someone's phone and no other damages have been done to the phone owner, the only thing that I believe is owed to the phone owner is every reasonable effort to recover the phone. I believe that is the restitution she deserves. I suppose if she had to replace her phone in the interim, she is due the loss of money for that as well. What others think, I can't comment upon as I don't know. :goodvibes

If Nelson is indeed the culprit, he's certainly obsessed with taking photos of himself. :rotfl2: As somebody who takes lots of photographs with a camera or phone camera, I find that I have everybody in my vacation photos EXCEPT myself.

BTW, although the update says the crew member has been put on administrative duties while they investigate, it doesn't actually identify the crew member does it?

When I'm on the cruise, I carry my iPhone with me .... it's got Angry Birds on it!!:rotfl:

Just leave the computer at home and bring multiple SD cards. You can also go to Shutters and have those pictures put on a CD for under $10.

No way would I ever leave my computer home, we take an insane amount of pics and this is a 17 day trip and I download and burn to cd every night so that I'm sure the pics are saved! I would have to have alot of memory cards, lol

DH agrees with you. That one of the reasons we got an Ipad to transfer the photos to and it is small enough to fit in the safe.

Actually, it says a crew member has been busted. It could be Nelson or it could be Nelson's incredibly Nelson-obsessed stalker. ;)

I don't think the culprit is Nelson. People don't normally ask someone to take photos of them with their phone; they usually take their own photo. The sunset photo of Nelson was taken from too far away for it to be him.

I skimmed through these 10 pages so could have overlooked the answer to this. Does anyone know where the phone was when it was "stolen"? Was it left lying in plain view in the room? It would still be theft but that's inviting it to happen. I'm not saying that's what happened but does anyone know?

That's why they invented memory cards that can hold an insane amount of pictures. I took over 1500 pics on a 4 day and about 1500 more from WDW and my memory card still had a lot of room. I also had 2 memory cards for my video recorder. I also delete pictures we don't want every night off the memory from the camera. I have only had to burn a cd once. (on our 3day when I didn't have enought memory) I agree to get something more moble and compact like a ipad or kindle fire that has storage capacity so you can not only stowe it away in the safe, but download pics.

Yeah but getting your photo taken by stolen iphone is not a criminal offence. I don't go asking my friends if the camera they're using to take my photo is stolen, do you? If Nelson is just the hapless friend who's getting his photo taken a lot by the thief, Nelson's also the guy who's name just got run through the mud. Ultimately, if Nelson isn't the guy who stole the phone, he should go after Ms. Facebook for falsely accusing him of stealing the phone for the sake of grandstanding on Facebook. Let's face it, she could have reported this to DCL or the cops instead of plastering the photos on Facebook. If she wanted to put them up after DCL or the cops intervened so she knew exactly who took it, she could have but instead, she's gone and named somebody who may or may not be the guy.

I'm not saying a CM didn't steal the phone. I just wonder if the right one got accused.

Absolutely!:thumbsup2

Why does that even matter? Someone still took another person's personal property. Next, you'll be saying if a woman has on revealing clothes it's an invitation to come and "cop a feel". :sad2: Ridiculous!!

The owner certainly doesn't owe anyone an explanation except for anyone she files a report with (DCL, police, etc.) but we're only getting her side of the story. How do we know that she isn't a fellow CM setting Nelson up? Or a scorned girlfriend who booked passage to set him up?

I'm just saying that nobody has enough information to pass judgment. The simplest explanation is the most likely, but not the only possible explanation. Someone was even saying "deport the guy!" How do we know he's not a US citizen?

As for defending DCL, I think they're doing the right thing: confiscating property, suspending employee, investigating.

I fully expect any organization to have its share of bad apples, including Disney. I just like to have the data before i know what's going on. For now, I'm enjoying watching the likelihood of Darwin at work, but if more info comes out, it may move from Darwin-at-work to Soap Opera. :)

Thank you for being so harsh. :sad2:

I was implying no such thing. Passengers are told to store all valuables in the safe. It is still a crime to steal. But leaving valuables in full view can be tempting to the "have nots" who want what others have. I am talking about possessions NOT people. Please don't misconstrue my comments. A crew member may have ruined his reputation in a fleeting moment of temptation OR he could be a habitual thief who looks through drawers in cabins and has finally been caught.

Why does that even matter? Because this thread has been discussing the incident and in an investigation the question of "Where was the phone when it was taken?" would certainly be asked. If I am the only one here who is wondering, everyone please forgive me for the question and disregard. Sorry!

The "thing" about this is that she could piece those pictures together in any way with any story.

I take issue with the fact that she has decided who stole her phone. Just because someone's picture is on the phone, doesn't mean it's their phone. In fact, the face that is among the photos on MY iphone the LEAST is probably my own.

Anyway, she found a way to get the attention of DCL very quickly and will get her phone back, which is fantastic. Comments on her facebook page however, seem to indicate that she is also "in it" for some extras from Disney -- which is just bunk. Disney owes her nothing except an effort to retrieve her phone.

In fact, one could argue that she has done more in terms of slander toward him and others in those photos than any damage that was done to her. For crying out loud, she called two DCL cast members hookers just because they are in a picture with him. Classy. Not.

AND she has written NOTHING on the comments under her album to indicate that Disney has gotten her phone back and has been in contact with her. Just seems to me something I would take the time to update. No?

My guess is his fate is still under Disney investigation.

If you read her captions as well as her comments, she never actually states that Nelson stole her phone in the FB Album. Her first caption reads:

This is Nelson. Nelson has my stolen iPhone.

She is very careful to refer to it as her "stolen iPhone" and that Nelson has it.

There was really no defamation involved with her referring to the two costumed women with Nelson as hookers. They are dressed as Pirate wenches and historically they were prostitutes(hookers).

FYI - Libel is written defamation and slander is spoken. ;)

How many pictures do you take? One 8gb SD card costs about $5.00 and will hold 3000 10mp pictures or 80 min of video at 13 mbps.
If you are concerned about backing up while on vacation you can get 2gb (750 pictures) or 4gb SD (1500 pictures) cards and use a new one everyday.
This is what we did rather than lugging a laptop around. one less thing to keep track of.

Sorry, but the true owner of the iPhone reached out to both DCL and Nelson directly to have it returned. The only time she got any 'action' was when her story went viral on FB. I don't believe that just because you are a 'have not', it is ok to be tempted by an iPhone laying around (regardless of if it fell out of a bag or the owner accidentally left it on a chair)! If he were an honest person, he would have turned in the phone to lost and found where the rightful owner could have picked it up!

I'm glad he was suspended until they determine his side of the story, but my guess is that he KNEW the iPhone was not his and decided to keep it anyway. If he bought it from another cast member, then I'm sure he would be more than happy to turn over the name of the person that sold it to him in order to get his job back.

did i miss something? how do we know it was 'nelson' who took it? he could be the innocent bystander who happens to be a friend of the person who took it. maybe nelson did not know. i posted a few pages ago, if it wasn't nelson who took it then we are accusing someone who people will continue to see onboard but will have prejudged.
sorry if i missed something. i know someone took/found it but was it in fact nelson???

Doesn't matter if it's a possession or person, you are still implying that it's the victims fault for "leaving valuables in full view" because it can be tempting to the "have nots". That's some backwards logic, IMO. :lmao:

At least for the IPad you have to purchase the camera adapter for it before you can download your photos to it.

There are locks you can purchase to lock your computer to something in the room. That would be a less expensive alternative to buying an IPad or Kindle Fire. Here is a link to one brand; I'm guessing there are others:
