Carry on or check tripods?

I've checked the TSA list and it says camera equipment, but it doesn't specifically list a tripod and I want to make absolutely positively sure that a tripod can be put in carry-ons...so for those out there who have done it, let me hear from ya!

Our good tripod is too long for carry on, so we put it in a piece of checked luggage. We have not had any problems so far. We defintely carry on all film & digital cameras & accessories.

After 9/11 I tried to take a tripod on board. I was told it was considered to be dangerous. So they made a cardboard box for the tripod in its holder and it was checked as luggage. Not sure what they do these days.

Thanks guys and a bump!

I honestly can see where it could easily become a weapon which is why I would really be surprised if it's let on. I don't think I'll risk it..any others?

My colleague (sitting right next to me as I type -- I just asked him what happened last week) was worried about this last week. He hates checking bags. He carried on his tripod (inside a bag) both ways of a round-trip just last week -- and wasn't even questioned about it as it went through x-ray.

Went from Dulles to Portland and back.

I know how he feels...I'm too paranoid to put anything in my checks other than clothing. I'm actually debating putting it in the box that I'm seriously considering shipping to myself at the resort (haven't actually decided to do this, but that's another topic I'm obsessing over.

Thanks to your colleague for the info! --- and you too, BTW!

I've placed my tripod into my carry-on numerous times without an issue.

The tripod may be considered capable of being a weapon, but it won't do much good against a pilot sitting on the other side of a hardened cockpit door.;)
