Caribe Royale - What's going on???

I just heard on our local news that 2 deputies got shot there. The SWAT team is there and everything. Does anyone have the scoop? I only caught a little of it on the news and of course we are so far away. I am supposed to stay there in August, but I want to be safe as well.

We stayed at Buena vista Suites on May 18th. It was very nice.
It is not a bad area, just a bad person. It can happen anywhere.

One of the fastest growing crimes against tourists right now are car robberies. These people go around hotel parking lots, looking for anything they can steal. The deputies surprised three people burglarizing a car and things got ugly. Fortunately, the deputies are going to be OK, and last I heard on the news, they had caught two of them, and had another one they think is the third person, but they were waiting for a witness to ID them.

The previous poster has it right. It's not a bad area, but a couple bad people in it. A few words of wisdom: Don't leave anything in view in your car at all. Don't leave anything of value in your car, even if it's out of sight. And please, don't ever leave your hotel room door unlocked, whether you're going to get ice, or just trying to get a breeze in the room. Criminals will always take the easy way out. Don't give them an opportunity to make you a victim. When the bad guys figure out that they won't get anything, they'll move on to somewhere else.

When we checked into the Sunterra Grand Beach Resort (almost next door to Caribe Royal) we received a big not in our welcome package advising us not to leave anything valuable at all in our vehicle due to break ins. The whole week we had stayed there not once did I see a patrol car. At that point I was already nervous about staying there. I am so glad to hear no one died because of this, what if it wasn't the police that caught them but the a person just walking by. I am sure they would not have been so fortunate.

The area is fine. I feel perfectly safe around the kissimmee/orlando (Disney) area. When I am in the area I will drive by myself or with my 2 little ones in the car.

Just remember to keep common sense when you are on vacation. Be aware of your surroundings, don't leave valuables in your car, lock the doors etc.

Tomorrow should be a VERY safe day to be there... a major law enforcement convention begins at Caribe Royale on Thursday. Ironic, isn't it?

As others have said, just don't leave things in your car. Too many people get into "vacation mode" mentally when they arrive in Orlando, and don't follow normal precautions -- which can be a temptation to thieves and other bad guys, unfortunately.

I used to live in that area, but it is having some real problems lately. Just yesterday, they had a shooting at the Golden Corral. Last year (I believe), someone was killed at the Ale House.

Be as careful as you can be. I always have felt safe in that area, but it seems that crime is coming in quickly, I hope they figure out a way to curtail it.

We just returned on Sunday. We stayed at WDW, but went to eat at the Golden Corral the day before it was robbed. The Orlando news made a big deal of the shootings at the Carribe Royale. They were reporting that crime is up in the tourist area and that the FBI and some other federal agency are sending in task forces to help the local law enforcement with the problem. The news folks were saying that Orlando cannot afford a crime problem in the tourist district. I have stayed in the Lake Buena Vista area many times and always felt safe. After this trip, I have to wonder.
