Cara Dune (Gina Carano) fired from Mandolorian over social media posts

According to "reports", this goes back a few months

Oh yeah, it's been brewing for a while. They were probably giving her a chance to settle it down as it was assumed she was in the "Rangers of the New Republic" show but they gave no details on that one. She could have turned it around by just being quiet for a while, but she just couldn't leave it alone.

Pedro Pascal, who stars in the same show as Gina Carano did, has made repeated statements comparing Trump voters to Nazis and immigration facilities to concentration camps. Disney did not discipline him for those comments. Gina Carano does it and she's fired. That's classic discrimination.
Disney can fire him then if they wish, It is their business and their choice.

Again I think it is important to note this was just not one recent instance, but a pattern of offensive media posts. Her mocking of personal pronouns goes back to Nov 2019. Even then.... she was still promoted and they were talking of building a new series around her.

(Quote taken from the NPR article I posted in #1)

"According to sources, Lucasfilm planned to unveil Carano as the star of her own Disney+ series during a December investors presentation but scrapped those plans following her November tweets," The Hollywood Reporter said.

You have to wonder what she was thinking .... or if she really wanted to work for Disney (Lucasfilm). I cannot believe she was not warned before this firing.

While you are welcome to express yourself and your views, you have to realize that there might be consequences such as losing your job. Celebrities are not above this.
Some are allowed to be above things like this though.....inconsistencies and double standards are prevalent. Lots of examples out there.
Depends on how much $$$ they make for the company. IMO.

I think we've well established that this is not a first amendment issue. Yes, Disney has every right to fire Carano. I also agree that this was about more than the one tweet. What bothers me about people jumping on her for supposedly comparing Jews during the Holocaust to conservatives today is the lack of reading comprehension and critical thinking skills in discussing that tweet. Carano was comparing the slippery slope of creating an atmosphere of us vs. them and what that can lead to. Is it that hard to step back and take some time to try to understand what is being said. Over and over, we see people jumping on the bandwagon with little to no critical thinking involved.
What also bothers me is the desire to have no one disagree with your views and the reaction when someone does. Why have we lost our ability to handle differences, discuss things with respect, and just agree to disagree?

If I say something, it is up to ME to make sure my message is heard appropriately. If someone (much less many people) don't follow my thoughts (and that happens a lot), I should not expect them to decode what I mean. I should be more clear in my message.

James Gunn. Posted about child rape and pedophilia. Fired, then rehired.

Disney / Alan Horn, Walt Disney Studios chairman’s statement:
“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitterfeed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,”

Gina Carano. Posted a parallel between the persecution of Jews in Nazi Germany and current hate towards people with different political views.

Disney/LucasFilm Statement:
"Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future," said Lucasfilm in a statement. "Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable."

No one could possibly write so as to have EVERYONE understand exactly what they are saying. We would have to write at an elementary level. I take personal responsibility for my critical thinking and comprehension.

I guess it didn't take long for this thread to become not about the decision to let her go, which I do believe has been at least talked about should they or shouldn't they for a while, and instead to become a weird "rights" conversation.

On the topic of her comments as has happened elsewhere a company may decide they don't want to work with you over what you say. Sometimes yes they are hypocritical over who they let go/rehire or never let go to begin with. It may not be the way we like it but it's something that is common enough. And I think we know there are generally a lot of factors that go on behind the scenes.

Well, first you have to know your audience. Second, you should not put out a message that others need to "decode". If someone has to do critical thinking to understand your point, you're doing it wrong.

ETA: If you WANT someone to decode your message (because you don't want to be clear), you can't get upset if they decode it "wrong".

I think we will have to agree to disagree. Critical thinking is applied in all parts of life; it's no different in regards to tweets. I do not agree with dumbing down a message.

Never said people shouldn't use critical thinking. I simply believe in "Say what you mean and mean what you say". How does it help anyone to "code a message" so people need to decode it to understand what you're trying to say?

Moving on...

As I said, she may actually have a good point, she's just very bad at articulating herself. I mean, she's an MMA fighter, she's not expected to be a genius. She brought it on herself though by constantly doubling-down instead of taking the time to make herself clear, and that's the problem.

I just don't get why celebrities are so stupid. This is a constant problem also... how can they not see what repercussions it had for XYZ.

They need some kind of guide of things NOT to say.

Is it racist? - Don't post it
Is it sexist? - Don't post it
Did you think about posting either of the things above? - Stay off social media.

If you look REALLY REALLY hard you can see her point, but it's just a bad idea to compare ANYTHING to the Holocaust. Personally, I don't think she gives a rat's butt about anti-semitism. She was just going for the most over the top and horrible way to make a weak point.

I'm not always one for cancel culture, either, but she had to see this coming.
