I am trying to rent a car for my upcoming December trip. I am looking at renting it through Budget since I will be dropping it off at Port Canaveral before my cruise. Well I have used all the discount codes and I get pretty good rates but the insurance is adding more than what the rental costs by itself. Is there another way to go around this?

I have never rented a car so I am clueless about this.

Thanks in adavnce. :)

Personally, I don't buy the extra insurance since I know for certain that my own car insurance also covers rental cars. Also many credit card companies cover a rental car if you charge the rental fee to your credit card. I would find out before you leave. My father always buys the extra ins. just in case, he won't have to deal with the hassle from home or chance that his premium may go up. I think it depends on how uncomfortable you are giving up the ins. You can really go crazy buying coverage from property damage and liability to "protecting" your hat stolen from the back seat. Thank God, in 8 trips I've never needed it or wished I bought it. I often wonder what other people do though.

Check with your insurance company to see that you will be covered while driving a rental car. "Rental coverage" is not the same thing as having your insurance cover you in another vehicle -- "rental coverage" means that your insurance company will pay for your rental car if your main car were in an accident, but has nothing to do with the extent to which you are protected while driving a rental. It may turn out that you are fully covered and could get by with less or no coverage.

Credit cards usually provide secondary coverage. They may cover the deductible, but won't cover "loss of use". The only card that I know of that does cover everything is Diners Club.

I used to work in car rental, so I hate to see people unnecessairly purchase coverages or not be covered when they need to be.

Your regular car insurance will cover the same as if you were in your own car (at least my insurance does-Alllstate, I called them). I have full coverage on my car, so everything will be covred. The only thing they said they don't cover is if the car rental company charges for loss of use for the vehicle. I read my credit card pamphlet (Chase Disney Visa) and it says they cover loss of use charges. So I will rent the car on that credit card and be covered. Hope this helps. :)
