Car rental--airport to port question

We will be flying into HNL and staying in Waikiki before our POA cruise. We plan to rent a car during that time. When we return to port, we will rent another car and head to Aulani, then back to the airport from there. So here's my question.....there are no free shuttles between the port and airport. There ARE free shuttles to other close rental locations. Does it make more sense to rent from those locations and let them pick us up/take us to the airport? Often it's easier getting into the airport from those drop offs, but I know HNL is pretty small. I don't love taxis--there are 4 of us, 2 young teens. Thoughts from anyone who's done this?? TIA!!

I'd go with a rental that has a shuttle to their locations. Just google the locations and you'll see; the car rental places are really just right outside the airport itself, and then on your return, you'll take car rental shuttle from the location, the 1/4 mile to the airport. You shouldn't need a taxi at all.

Right--in trying to be brief, I probably wasn't clear. I will be coming into the airport, but returning to the PORT. And on the other end, I'll be coming from the port but returning to the AIRPORT. There are no shuttles between port and airport (or so the websites seem to tell me).

So would I be better getting my car from a non-airport location, as they WILL shuttle you both ways (again, or so I understand)?

I would call the rental agencies you normally use and pose your question. It is also usually cheaper not using the airport agencies because of the added airport fees/taxes.

Yeahhhhh, that sounds easier than I've found it to actually be.......but I guess I'm going to have to try again. I really didn't think this was going to be a tough question, considering that cruise runs nonstop year-round, but maybe lots of folks just use the ships excursions. It just disturbs me when the car companies can't answer me! I'm afraid I'm going to show up and end up wasting a ton of time getting it straightend out OR a ton of money on taxis trying to get me back to my ship if the shuttles aren't as advertised.
