Canon SD700 now or wait for the SD800?

The SD800 should be available at Amazon November 10 (for $399). They currently have the SD700 for $339.

Of course, I'm itching to buy a camera NOW, but I wonder if the prices are going to go down a lot on the SD700 soon, or if the features on the SD800 are going to be that much better to justify the extra expense.

I'll need a camera at the end of November. Do Canon's prices drop by much when the new versions are released?

Any opinions from the experts?

Go ahead and splurge on that SD700. The SD800's improvements are trivial over the SD700's. 1 more megapixel which won't make a difference unless you're attempting to print something the size of your house's wall. Both feature IS (image stabalization), which lets you shoot in low light with less blur factor.

Pricewise...older generation Canon products do not drop by much when the new one comes out. I bought an SD500 1.5 years ago at 499. It's still worth about 399 1.5 yrs later. So, the price drop you're looking for would not be immediate. The SD700 may drop like 50 bucks at most if at all when the SD800 comes out. Don't even consider the SD900. It's inferior to the SD800. Also 100 bucks more I think.

Verdict: GET SD700 NOW!

FishFlavoredSoda, That was just the info I was looking for-- right after I read this, I went and got a coinstar Amazon gc and came home and ordered an SD700. Can't wait for it to arrive! I would have kicked myself if I'd have waited till the last minute and only saved a few $. Now I'll have lots of time to play with the camera before our trip.

Thanks so much!

my wife has an SD700 and the photos seem to be on the noisy side compared to our previous S400 and S410. possibly because the sensor is smaller. also, the sound recording seems much quieter than our previous cameras. on the plus side, the IS seems to work. i just wish we'd waited a couple of months to buy it. we paid about $100 more than the current price!
