Went to a place in western mass this weekend with Glacial potholes that was pretty neat. Got to play with my new lens. didn't get any great waterfall pics, but got lots of my son and niece.

DH got me an early b-day gift this evening at Best Buy:yay:

It's midnight and I can't wait until the battery is fully charged so I can play with my new camera!

I didn't purchase any extra lens as I want to practice first, hopefully in the future and for our upcoming December trip I'll be able to get a better lens...any recommendations?

Congratulations!!! You'll have a ton of fun with the XTi! I think you're right to stick with the kit lens for now. I stuck with the kits lens for about six months, then got the 28-135 IS as my general all-purpose lens because I really like the extra reach over the kit lens.

Can't wait to see your first shots :thumbsup2

I did the same thing. Just had the kit lens for about 4 months, and have had the 28-135 IS for about a month now, and definitely like the extra zoom. I don't want to be having to change lenses too often, and i think this is going to work well. I also got the 50mm/f1.8 because it was so inexpensive and highly reccommended for low light situations, and have used it inside without a flash and it does take real nice pics. Have fun with your new camera!!

How is the kit lens good for taking indoor and outdoor night shots?...For example, taking night pics of the Castle or let's say pics of Pirates of the Caribbean ride? Fireworks?
I am more intested in a good zoom and low light lens.

Well, the battery is fully charged and out I go to experiment this new camera and I will post pics soon!

thanks for all the advice!:thumbsup2

Almost any lens will take decent pictures of the castle and fireworks, because to get good ones of those your talking longer exposures on a tripod. It will struggle on PotC because you can't get a large enough appeture for a moving low light hand held shot.

Practice and learn with the Kit, then figure out what pictures you want, that you can not get with the Kit, and then make your next lens purchase based on that.

congrats! DH got my Xti for me last week...and I've also decided to stick with the kit lens for now.
I think my next purchase will be the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM Lens, but I'm not totally sure about that.

After checking out everyone's pictures on here my DH and I decided that we needed to get a new camera for our trip coming up. We bought the Canon Rebel XTi and so far I am LOVING it. Can someone tell me, you can zoom in on the pictures after you take them, but how to you save it to the cameras memory card?? I cannot for the life of me figure it out.

Anyone have any good tips for me and this camera, unfortunately we will have only had the camera for a week when we go, so not lots of time to learn too much. But any pointers would be GREAT!!

 THANKS

not 100% sure but I think that the review is actually just that a review you cant edit pictures in-camera. You have to edit them with cropping when you get them to your photo editor of choice. The zoom in function gives you a better idea of how the picture may look if you were to crop it is what i think its meant to do but like I said I could be wrong if I am I am sure one of the more experienced people will lets us both know:surfweb:

That's corrrect, once you have the picture on the computer is when you do your cropping.

Also,

Make sure you understand how to change ISO, you can not do that in the scean modes or the green box, but can do so in P mode. In P you can choose ISO and if the flash goes off or not, the camera will pic everything else for you. That will be your easiest way of getting low light shots, without a little more understanding, since you have such a small time before your trip.

My one and only WDW trip to date, I was pretty much a newbie again in the world of dSLR, but did manage to get some decent pics, If I had realized how how much changing the ISO would have helped, I would have had even that many more.

THANKS for the tips!! Tonight I will check it out...luckily we are there for 8 days so we will have time to check it out and "redo" some if need be.

Canon has some tutorials on their website which might be useful for you and are pretty quick to go through, which give the basics for shooting with a DSLR camera.

Have fun with your camera!

My very first attempt at an HDR

I'm having a hard time trying to decide between the Canon XT or XTi cameras. Over the years, I have owned a 35mm Canon EOS II and a Canon Rebel IX Lite Advanced film camera (great camera by the way). I now own a small 5 mp Sony Cybershot DSC-p93 point and shoot.

I want to get back to full control shooting and that is why I'm looking at these cameras. I know most of the differences between the two that Canon lists. It appears that I have two main features with the upgrade to XTi. They are 2 more MP and a larger LCD. After shopping prices, the best deals are $153 difference in the two models.

If it were you, would you upgrade to the XTi?

Bonus round; Can you shoot infrared with either of these cameras? I am new to shooting IR and have see some great IR photos in this forum!

Thanks!

i think the xti might also have 9 focus points or somehow a different focus?( been a while since i looked so i could be wrong) i think it would depend on if i thought i would want to upgrade anytime soon and just kind of wanted to get used to a dlsr first...(ie if i thought within a yr or so i might want the 40dor what ever it was by then) i'd probably go with the cheaper xt, but if i planned on keeping it for longer i'd go with the xti. i have the xt and didn't feel the need to upgrade to the xti but am getting the 40d when i save up enough for it....
also what kind of lenses do you have from your old film, if you have decent lenses i'd get the better camera, if not i'd buy so decent lenses and get the cheaper camera....
also though, have you considered the 30d? it's faster than the rebels and has a better focus system and now that the 40d is released might not be that much more expensive than the xti...( easy for me to spend your money huh) it's not 10mp but i don't think that is a problem. i wish i had gone that route when i bought my xt...

as far as infrared, not that i know of but you can use alien skin software( and maybe some others) for an ir effect

Have an XT, there certainly were not enough advanatages when the xti came out to entice me in anyway, but I have moved on to the 40D.

As for IR, it is my understanding that to get true IR photos, requires some modifications to the camera, thereby making it incapable of standard pictures. I believe there are filters you can use that will get you closer to the effect, or as Jann suggested you can PP to get the effect as well.

I have the XT, but I know the XTi has the integrated cleaning system and the self-cleaning sensor unit - which would be a nice feature to have, IMO. Honestly, the price of the XTi has gone down enough in the last year that if I were looking to get a digital camera now, I'd probably go with the XTi. I guess it depends on what you want to do with your photography, too. The more I get into it, the more I'm looking forward to buying my L lenses and upgrading my camera body - when the budget allows, of course! :rotfl:
