Can someone explain why a dog owner would do this?

I know someone who has a dog that they keep in their basement. He is never allowed upstairs with the family. The only human contact he gets is feeding time and to be let outside for a minute to do his business.

Why have a dog? Anyone? :confused3

...because the owner is an idiot. Poor dog.

How sad.

This reminds me of our neighbors. They keep their dog in a kennel in their yard all day/night. They got it as a pup and they never pay any attention to it, all the dog does is bark day and night. I cannot understand why they got the dog to begin with.

I can NOT stand people who do that to animals. Those kind of people shouldn't have a dog

Your neighbor sounds like my neighbor. We're not neighbors, are we? :p

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I'm not the only one that views this as really wrong. I'd almost call it cruel, except for the fact that at least the dog gets fed and watered regularly, and is sheltered.

Other than those basic needs being met, I think it's so sad. :dog:

I think that's horrible. There are all kinds of cruelty and I believe isolating the family dog to be one of them. Dogs are pack animals and it's a shame his pack does this to him. I have known people like this also...when i was younger, the neighbor kept their one dog chained out back 24/7. They always said" he's a dog, he'll be fine.". I only take one vacation year solely for the reason that my lab-mix is miserable at the kennel. My pom, on the other hand, will go anywhere as long as she's fed. Both our dogs are inside dogs and hate to go outside unless it's for a ride. So sorry about the doggy in the basement...the least they could do is get him a friend to lock down there with him. j/k. Have you spoken to them about their treatment of him?

That makes me sad. :guilty:
I wish people like that would not get a pet, what kind of life is that for the dog? He must be very lonely.

The dog, being fed, getting water, having shelter, and, although you may not see it as such, being taken care of, is probably better off than 50% of the people in this world.

This makes me sick. Someone should dognap it and give it a real home. Makes me really sad to hear stories like this.

Are they my in-laws? It's exactly as you described. The only reason they have the dog is because my brother-in-law couldn't afford to keep her anymore and since he had paid some huge sum of money for her, they wouldn't give her away. Makes absolutely no sense to me.

I feel the same about people who leave their dog outside 24/7 and never interact with it. I have several neighbors that do that but I can't do anything about it... they don't even talk to them when they dump food and water in their bowls. How very sad of a life those pups live!

Gee - wonder if it's the same person I know. (they live by my studio though!)

I agree it is terribly sad..
But we had a dog that hated human contact.
She was so anti-social.
We tried everything we could, but she just didnt want any love or affection.
We finally ended up giving her a farmer who had lots of land where she could run free.
She ended up loving it there.

The poor dog used to have a "friend". That dog recently died though and now he's alone. My heart breaks for him. The people who own him don't see anything wrong with it. They view him as "just a dog" who doesn't belong in the family living quarters. Then why have him? I just don't get it.

That is just horrible!! I just got a puppy last week and he already is living like a king.
