Just my $0.19 ($.02 adjusted for inflation).

My daughter has the 4milliion dollar home for a Nikon D40 and the kit lens with one additional lens and it is tight. It all fits but she wishes she would have gotten the 5. She really does like the bag though.

I have the Canon Xsi with a 28-135 on the camera, the 18-55 kit lens and am getting the 55-250 soon. I just bought the Tamrac #5502 Explorer 2 bag this past week. It will hold all of the above but it is a tight fit. I looked at the next size bag up, the Tamrac 5603 System 3, but it just seemed to be too large for carrying around all day.

My opinion is to go to a large camera store and just look at them all and try to fit stuff into them to make sure it works for you. I went to Roberts Imaging in Indianapolis to get mine and they were very helpful as I imagine most good stores would be.

i have the tamrac system 3, it holds 2 smaller lenses( ie 50mm-wide angle -fisheye size) rebel xt body with 28-135 and 70-200 crammed into the main part of the bag ie the zipper is straining unless i have the 70 on the body, once i upgrade the body i'm gonna have to get a lens holder for the 70 i am sure...
i'd buy a little larger bag than you think you need unless you plan on buying another one in a few months when you "need" a new lens or 2.
one thing i like about the tamrac system series is you can get a lot of attachments for it and hook them on the bag( ie lens holders, filter wallets) so basically you can keep expanding as the need arises.

My uncle used to keep a small set of folding scissors on one of the zipper pulls of his bag didn't understand why at first but after trying it I find myself using them quite a bit.
Battery packages misc strings and papers used for a bounce etc etc.

Lens brush/pen really handy to have

Puffer/blower

2 large garbage bags rolled up in a gallon size freezer zip lock. I use these to cover my bag and gear when the weather takes a turn for worse and in a pinch they make a good rain poncho. You roll them up and put them in the zip lock and roll that up and stuff in the bag keeps them from getting messed up and unwieldy.

Lens cloth or chamois

Battery carrier/batter checker I found at Dollar General store a pda sized case that holds AAA and AA batteries and has a built in checker.

For the cameras that take battery packs or odd batteries keep a spare.

I also have a small tripod stuck away and a filter wrench.

Forgot to add a small led flashlight also is on another zipper pull for when its dark and my bag is black inside
So what else you folks have in your kit?

I'll probably miss some things, but here are a few I usually carry:

WhiBal card (http://www.pictureflow.com/products/whibal/purchase.html)--got it for Christmas, still haven't tried it :rolleyes1

Spare batteries for camera and external flash

Lens cloth and blower/brush

Extra CF cards

Hand sanitizer or wipes, sunscreen, etc.

I need to get some sort of hard case for my rectangular filters.

Tabletop tripod that could barely hold my D70 so is useless to me now that I've upgraded, but I keep it in there for dd to use with her p&s

Sometimes I'll make a little cheat sheet with settings I want to try for something I'm going to shoot

This is what I carry in my backpack for a day in the parks:

camera
50mm lens
18-200 lens

flash
extra battery
extra cf cards
circular polarizer
lenscloth

kitchen size garbage bag
rainsleeve
bandana or small rag

carbiners (use to clip my camera strap to my backpack straps when my neck gets tired)
manual (sometimes I leave this behind)

gum
moo cards
water bottle
sunglasses
kleenex
paper
pen
park ticket, room key and IDs
postcards that I give to kids

And for night shooting:
remote shutter release
tripod
penlight

Tabletop tripod that could barely hold my D70 so is useless to me now that I've upgraded, but I keep it in there for dd to use with her p&s

I have a couple but have not been super happy with them I found this one but haven't tried it anyone try one of these yet?

Hakuba e-Pod

I have one of these, and it works alright with small and medium lenses. It's small enough that I carry it on my utility belt when I tour at WDW, and it works well enough on trash cans, some railings, and light poles to get reasonably good shots in low light.

Other items in my camera bag include zip ties, keychain flashlights, ziploc bags, a mini USB memory card reader, and chargers for all of my batteries.

I'll add a couple of new items to the list:
- Small hand towel (the cheap ones they sometimes hand out at sporting events are ideal) to dry off equipment if it gets wet.
- Sharpie (no self-respecting photographer is without one!)
- If I'm taking my D70, I also carry a spare LCD cover that I have with me so I can replace it if it pops off and I lose it.

Any suggestions for a camera bag that stays infront of you. I am not a backpack type of person. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on a sling type or beltpack style. Looking for it to hold Nikon SLR with lens and one additional lens. Also, looking for something that when you open the bag that you do not need to rest it down someplace so that everything doesn't fall out. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You might want to take a look at the Lowepro line of Slingshot bags. They are a type of backpack, but with only one strap. You simply slide it around in front of you when you need to get into it and the access zipper is facing up. You never have to take it off to gain accesss. I actually carry it front of me most of the time and rest my arms on it. It also makes a good steady for hand held shots. Just google Lowepro slingshot.

This looks very similar to the one I have. IIRC, mine was supposed to be able to hold the weight of my D70 and a decent lens quite comfortably, but it's never felt stable enough for my taste.

That Hakuba epod looks sturdier, but I'm having trouble finding any details about it. In fact, when I google it, one of the first things that comes up is this thread. I don't think I've ever seen a disboards thread in a google search result before.

In addition to everything ppl have mentioned, I also carry a compact camera in my bag. This is the camera I use when I ask a stranger to take a picture of me and my family.

It takes too much effort to explain to people that they have to look through the viewfinder on my dSLR... And then there's the whole trust issue as well.

are you talking about cokin type filters? if so please post what you find. hub sat on my cokin case and smashed it.. i though a cd case would work but it doesn't so right now it's in a dhl address bag ( for dhl shipping) since it was that or nothing:lmao:

only other things i can think of that haven't been mentioned are my battery charger( just so i don't lose it, i put it there with all my other stuff) my rain sleeves, my lens cleaner for my glasses, a pen, my manual( if i could remember how to change my focus point that seems to have a mind of it's own i wouldn't need that:rotfl2: ) a booklet on what flower blooms when in Ohio, a map of covered bridges in my area( still meaning to do that) my cell phone case so i can clip it to my strap and not have to carry in if i don't have a pocket . occasionally included a pull up and wipes " just in case" before gd was potty trained:lmao:

i h ave a tamrac system 3 but they have others larger and smaller( mine holds dslr body, 2 small, 1 med and 1 larger lens and a bunch of junk:rotfl2: ) it's a messanger type bag and i like it cause it has a piggy back thing on the back so you can put it over a rolling suitcase as well as use it as a shoulder or belt bag (although you would need belt and suspenders if yu wear in on your belt imo, way to heavy to use and think your pant would still stay up;) ). it also has a bunch of attachments ie lens cases, filter wallets etc you can attach to the outside( hence the "system " name) for more room. it was around $60 and i am actually very happy with it.it's light enough i can carry it loaded and the shoulder strap actually stays put. if i'm walking for a distance i usually have my camera around my neck and swing the case towards my back so it's out of the way. plus it's flat on the bottom so i can put it down and still use it easily when i stop to take a shot.
http://www.tamrac.com/5603.htm some how the one in the link looks much more organized than mine lol

LOL same thing here I cant find out alot but it says can be used like a monopod/handle and it looks to have a wide stance and a good head for such a small unit.

Here is a link if you are interested

Thanks! I'll take a look at those.

I am talking about Cokin-type filters and darn it, I was at the camera store this morning buying yet another bag (I want a bag that works like those tents in the Harry Potter books--from the outside it appears to be a regular tent but inside is a three-bedroom house--I want my D300 plus 4 lenses, a flash and all the other accoutrements we're talking about here in a bag that appears to be carrying a slim little p&s  ) and I forgot about trying to find something for those filters. Oh well, guess I'll have to go back.

Check out the canon bag http://www.amazon.com/Canon-Backpac...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1213387285&sr=1-2 I just got mine and have been real happy with it even my wife liked it.
I have 2 bodies and 3 lenses flash charger batteries cords etc and still have room. Its not for everyone but its a nice change from the rectangle bags I have.

That's a great price. I came home with this: http://www.kata-bags.com/Item.asp?pid=400&perentId=4&ProdLine=4 I think I like it, but I'm not thrilled. The compartment with the vertical zipper is a bit of a pain to get into. What I do like though is it's not as tall as some of the other backpacks. I like the Tamrac Adventure 7 but I'm small, and it's just not comfortable for me to carry.
