Calling all proud Virginians......

I thought the same thing, and when I saw all the replies I thought DANG there can't be THAT many virgins here!

And that all these virgins are readily admitting on a public forum to being PROUD of it, too!!!!!!!!!

I do medical billing and collections for a radiology facility right now- however, i have done both for private doctors and physical therapy facilities also.

i can work for a hospital also in the billing dept- i have been in this field since 1995

DH is an auto mechanic-- but he can work on anything- he has been working on cars since he was about 15, he works on his cycle and his john deere.

DH would prefer to be closer the the water (we are about 40 minutes from ocean city NJ right now) but being on a lake with lots of trees would be just fine. i would love to actually live in a very rural area, but as i said-- have some good shopping not too far away.

well, then I would definitely recommend the Roanoke area - there are MANY health facilities that could use your services, including two major ones - Lewis Gale Hospital and the Carillion Health Center. Also, Smith Mountain Lake is about 40 minutes away - a great lake. Or in another direction, you have Claytor Lake which is also beautiful. The housing is very affordable too and you can get to rural area EASILY, including the two lake areas I just talked about.

Also, Va Tech is about 45 minutes away from Roanoke in Blacksburg, VA which may be another option - a really cute college town (and clayor lake is in between Roanoke and Blacksburg (closer to Blacksburg).

I also disagree with the tax situation - I live in NY now and I wish I was in Virginia b/c of the taxes - not to mention auto insurance is about 1/2 of what I pay here in upstate NY.

its true the boom of the northeast hasn't fully hit them yet but it is growing down in VA. My parents moved to Chesapeake, VA in 1993. I believe they had 100,000 people there in 1993 and over 300,000 now. My parents house has doubled in price almost. Like I said not as crazy as here in Lehigh Valley, PA but crazy. My townhouse has gone up at least $100,000 in 3 years.

I'm a little late getting on here, but here is my opinion. Virginia is a great place to live.

I would suggest the Roanoke area, as well as Blacksburg. If DH and I didn't have both set of parents here helping w/ the kids, we would probably move to Blacksburg. SML is o.k., growing fast and having some issues. Claytor Lake is very nice. I went to school at Radford University (about 15 minutes from Blacksburg) and DH went to VT. We both grew up in Roanoke.

I would also consider the rural areas around Charlottesville and Richmond. I have friends from there and it is very nice.

Personally, I would stay away from the Danville area. The area is getting really depressed due to all the businesses leaving and I would say they aren't as accepting of "outsiders" as other places.

and I don't know if I mentioned it before, but Roanoke has an excellent public education system. I loved my school system growing up and it gets rated pretty well each year.

I agree with the Charlottesville area, i am originally from the Delmarva Peninsula, it's called the Eastern Shore! The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel links us to the Va Beach area & the rest of Virginia!

I love this area! It's slow paced and the ocean is on one side, the bay on the other! But, i moved to the Blue Ridge Mtns when i was 7 and came back to the ES when i was 14!

Charlottesville has alot more to offer job wise and the scenery is stunning!

I would recommend the Roanoke/Lynchburg area as well. I've been in this area since 1997. However the property values have been going up in Lynchburg quite a bit in the past few years. We bought our home 3 years ago in a new neighborhood and the houses being built in there now, just like ours, are 50k more. Fortunately, the over all cost of living hasn't raised as fast. Both areas have many medical facilities, Lynchburg has two hospitals and Roanoke as 2, plus the hospitals in Salem. Lots of good shopping, beautiful views and decent weather and many good day trips in the surrounding areas.

Danville is having lots a problems. Many businesses have pulled out from that area, though they are starting to see more annoucements of companies coming in, it hasn't been enough to help yet. Plus their electric company keeps increasing the rate in huge jumps. I see people on the news all the time talking about not having a job and not being able to afford the increases.

I have lived in Virginia for about 24 years now. I currently live in Loudoun County which is about 30 miles west of DC. While I love it here, the traffic is a nightmare at times and the cost of living is so high. Our property taxes keep going up up up. I don't mind that so much since we really need the tax money for the new schools and road improvements. Anyways, I digress.....

I went to college at James Madison Univ. which is in the Shenandoah Valley (Harrisonburg) and it is a very nice area. I also have friends who live in Charlottesville and love it there. Good luck with wherever you decide to go! Virginia is a great place to live!

LOL! Great question! I moved here from FL where taxes were extremely low in comparison to VA. I still haven't figured out the sales tax here. I have anywhere from one to three taxes on my receipt when I purchase something at a store. WHY? State? City? And what else? I find it strange. Not consistent at all either.

And what's with the city stickers for the cars? Some cities require them, others don't. And it's only about $26 for the year. Why not just get rid of them and add the $$ into EVERYONE's city taxes? Seems they would do a bit better with that route.

Smith Mountain Lake

My sister and I went there on vacation in our single days. When we arrived at our room, we asked the guy that brought in our bags what there was to do that's fun. He said we could go see the fox races! Uh, we passed on that! We cut the visit here short by a couple days and extended our days at Wintergreen. GREAT decision!!!

The stickers are required for all cars, but where you get them depends on where you live. If your city doesn't require them, then your county will. Its also tied to your property taxes. If you don't pay your property taxes, you will not get a sticker next year, causing you all kinds of problems with attempting to drive your car. I know all of the stickers are confusing, but you get used to it after awhile. DH takes care of all of those for us. That's what husbands are for.

Not all cities require stickers anymore. And there is no county government that would supercede them.

Near where I live, Norfolk and Virginia Beach have eliminated the need for City stickers. Both those cities have determined that there were alternate ways of keeping track of the property tax (via the DMV).

I believe the other Hampton Roads cities will follow their lead eventually.

I checked a website a couple of weeks ago regarding taxes and Virginia (as a whole) is ranked something like 39th. Meaning 39 states pay a higher percentage of taxes than Virginians.

The sales tax here is pretty low overall (about 5% give or take). Virginia Beach has a higher rate than most of the other local cities because of it's tourist base (they want to earn more money off those tourists). And you will pay more tax at a restaurant there than you will anywhere else around here.
