No, weight is going up and my clothes are fitting worse. I am so discouraged. :worried:

I CrossFit and the attitude regarding distance running is generally negative in the CrossFit world because it erodes your muscles (more muscle=faster metabolism) as well as other reasons. I've seen some articles about why it's especially not good for women. Like this one here: http://articles.elitefts.com/training-articles/women-running-into-trouble/
Maybe it will be helpful information for some of you so you understand what's happening with your body when you run.

I'm doing the PHM in 2014 and it will be my first half. I'm 4 weeks into training and trying to focus mostly on the longer runs and keep up my CrossFitting during the week. I've never had any luck losing weight when doing running as exercise and I have even gained weight like some of you here. It's frustrating, but doing a Disney half is on my bucket list so it's now or never!

I did my first official 10K on Wed night. No more night races for me - YUK! The anticipation all day, the rearranging of meals and meal times, the afternoon tiredness that comes from not sleeping well in anticipation..all too much HOWEVER in 100 degree heat index, incredible humidity, hilly terrain...I was able to get a PR of 1:14.27. I was VERY happy with that

Wow, interesting perspective on night races!! I've been tossing around the idea of signing up for a local 10k night race in a couple weeks because it's one of very few that are reasonable driving distance from where I live and I need SOMEthing to work toward to reinvigorate my training (kind of stuck in a rut atm). I am NOT a morning person so I was always really excited to do a night race but I would hate all those side effects you just listed WAY MORE than having to get up early for a run, so thanks for sharing your experience! I'll have to pick out a different race to focus on for now.
Also - congrats on your PR!! :yay: That's a great time for a 10k, especially considering your race day conditions!

Good luck with your first half on Saturday!! :goodvibes

I've been stalking all the local Best Buys waiting for them to get the Fitbit Flex in and when they finally did I snatched one up! It helps me to feel so much more motivated to train. It helps me keep track of everything and set goals for myself. It's great!

I'm going to give a little tough love here in regards to running/weight loss. Weight loss is calories in/calories out. If you consume more calories then you burn off, you will gain weight. You absolutely cannot run off, marathon off, or even Ironman off, a bad diet (trust me, everyone in my family has tried :lmao:)

You roughly burn 100 calories/mile, whether you are running a 16 minute mile or a 6 min mile. So a 3 mile burns around 300 calories. However, running makes you pretty damn hungry. Think about how easy to eat that back.

Now let's talk about your long runs. Yippee, a 10 mile run burns roughly about 1,000 calories! But, first you had a pre-run snack of about 300 calories. Then you had about 200 calories to recover, post run. Plus, you had to intake about 200 calories on the run to keep you going. Oh wait...now you're only down to 400 calories burned. And, on top of that, you're usually much more exhausted after your long run, so you are less active during the day then you would normally be.

So while yes, running is a great calorie burner, it's not the end all be all. If you see the scale creeping up, try keeping a food diary for a few days. And while it's definitely possible to gain a small amount of muscle, (my thighs are pretty rock solid!), the unfortunate truth is that running breaks down muscle, rather than build muscle.

But the good news, is that give the choice between eating less and running more, you can always chose running more! I love running, so I see it as a win-win situation.

Did you see the runner's world response to that blog? The auhtor cherry-picked alot of info to support his thoughts

Tough love fashionista but you're right on. I strongly encourage anyone interested in balancing nutrition/running to smag a copy of the book The Runner's Diet by Dr. Fernstrom.

I love this advice. And I needed to hear this. I haven't been losing lately but I KNOW it's because of my eating habits. I know I need to track my food but I don't feel like it. So until I do that, I gave to be comfortable with my current weight.

I recently read this article that is an answer to anti-running articles.

http://gokaleo.com/2013/06/11/women-and-running/

"The competing effects of muscular hypertrophy and endurance training are well researched. Simply put, you can’t be a top-tier bodybuilder and a top-tier endurance athlete. Just looking at real-world athletes will highlight this fact without the need to get into the underlying molecular processes, to say nothing of the time requirements. However, the choice of citations here is odd."

I like this paragraph in the article. Look at a 100 yard sprinter. Muscular. Powerhouse. Thick. Then look at a marathoner. Thinner. And just a different physique. Yet neither could do the other job. It's a matter of choice of what you want :)

I didn't see that article before - thanks for the link and to the other person who poster a similar follow-up article.

I'm sure it's possible to find some "evidence" to back up any claim and I take all findings articles with a grain of salt. I do think it's near impossible to generalize everyone's bodies on what is good/bad for you. You have to find what works for you and what you enjoy. I certainly think running is better than no exercise at all. I prefer muscle building, intense and short workouts and can visibly see differences in my body after a few short months of CrossFit. I've just always been one of those people who suck at running and don't get much enjoyment out of it. It was another reason I signed up for the PHM. I'm hoping my running improves and that I learn to enjoy it more. Right now though, I'm cursing every step I take and trying to talk myself out of stopping. :worried:

Room rates and packages just came out for 2014. I was able to book a room for the PHM weekend at POFQ with a AAA discount in a standard room. :)
Really wanted to stay at an Epcot resort but since we are going back at Spring Break I wanted to save a little on cost. :)

Save me a room at AoA, yall! Hopefully will book next month, but that's where I'm hoping to stay for this trip. :scared:

I'm so excited that rack rates are available now for 2014!!!!!! :cool1: Howevverrrr, I'm curious about something....when I called to book room only on June 10th, I had them price out a package as well (the sports event line was able to do this, not regular reservation line)...and I just priced out the exact same dates, same package on the Disney reservation site and it's the EXACT same price as what the sports line quoted me!?
How did the sports line know a month ago?? Or did prices just somehow magically not go up for 2014? :confused3

Heeeeee! Booked our room at PoP this morning! It's official now!!!! The gamete of emotions!!!! :woohoo: :scared: :lmao:

Congrats!! I just booked at POP, too. :) Honestly, I'm hoping for a discount because $175/night is kinda outrageous for a value... eeeeek. But it's not quashing my excitement - SO excited!!! :)

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2 I'll add, too, that endurance training trains your body to go longer on less fuel... pretty much the total opposite of what you want it to do to drop weight quickly. I know that it's possible to lose weight while running distance because I've seen people do it. But it's not easy and the folks I know religiously tracked calories in and out to make it happen.

 This looks soooo good! :woohoo:

Hi all! New to this thread and will go back and try to skim though all 160(!) pages. I'm trying to price out doing this trip and was looking for a travel agency who can offer group pricing on rooms and tickets. Does anyone have a group agency they are using and can share? I would need to get a room at POR-Alligator Bayou as I have 3 kids (will be 4, 8 and 10) and they can accommodate 5. I've contacted GET Travel but their room block is in POFQ so while they could request a POR-AB room for me, it's not guaranteed. Their park admission prices (convention tix) are usually at a significant savings. Ideally, I'm looking for another group agency who has similar ticket pricing that can get me into the room I need.
