Calling all Chicago DISers #3

Good Morning Everyone! :flower3:

Slo ~ You sure did raise Stephanie right! :thumbsup2 What a great young lady and you are right, people remember others by their actions, not their grades!

Geffric ~ Congratulations to Geoff on his graduation!

Becky ~ Glad Kyle is feeling better!:thumbsup2

Everyone else ~ :wave2:

oh, does anybody know where I can find Pre-trip reports around here? I'm not sure what forum they're in...

Morning everyone! What a beautiful day!:thumbsup2 I am so looking forward to the weekend.

Slo ~ Your Sephanie sound like a lovely young lady. It sounds as if she thinks with her heart and we need more kids like that. I agree with the whole people aren't going to be remembered for their grades. Sometime when things don't come easy to a person it makes them stronger all around;) She is a tribute to you and your DH!

Bunchkin~ Sounds like you have alot going on! I will keep your MIL in my prayers and hope for the best! It is amazing what science can come up with these days, however, I also believe that hope, support and a good state of mind are just as important:)

Becky~Anyway Kyle could be going through a growth spurt? Sleeping and upset stomachs sometimes are an indicator as well as a sudden strong appetite. It might be interesting to measure him and check his height again in a couple of weeks:confused3 Glad he's feeling better though!

geffric~Wow what a bittersweet time in your house. Highschool gratuation and then one year anniversary! Wow! I guess the next big milestone is his 21st. I've only been a Step Mom for the last few years (I count the years we weren't married too cause she does) and already I see how quickly time goes by. One minute we are taking Meg to see Santa clause the next minute I'm sitting with her having "the talk"! Sheesh!

disneygal~What great news! I am so excited for you. We were in WDW for Labor Day one year and it was VERY HOT! :cool2::sunny: I personally love it like that but not everyone else so make sure you pack short, t-shirts (tanks), suntan lotion and hairbands. When you are going to your planning sessions try and bring bottled water with you and / or gatoraid as even though it is a wonderful time and you totally have your act together it is stressful and you may need to catch your breath. You never know when the dream / planning is going to become real!! The reality of it all comes up on you! ;)

OK so we have a Friday night Ice Cream social this eveing at Meg's school. Then tomorrow Mike is planting and Meg and I are going looking for birthday party invites. Planning on having a b-day party at Georgia Nut in Glenview and then a slumber party! Should be a blast!

Talk soon!

Really?? That would be a new one on me. Good thing school is almost over as his pants are too short for him now as it is. His shoes are also falling apart (I noticed it yesterday he has a big old hole in his shoe where his big toe is!) BUT they have gym shoes used at school, so I refuse to buy him shoes when in 2 more days those shoes are coming home for the summer & they will be in brand new shape.

Speaking of pants has anyone *ever* found 14 slims anywhere? I have been looking & looking & looking. I've looked at Wal-Mart, Kohl's, Target, Meijer so far for sure. I always take a peek when I'm out. My 12 year old needs new pants desperately but the kid weighs something like 86 pounds -- literally he got the "too low" indicator on their BMI thing from gym. I have found 14 Husky and 14 Regular. Adjustable waist is preferred. I did buy him some 14 Regulars and tightened the waist up as tight as I could but they still fall off of him and he HATES them with a passion since they are too big on him. He won't do a belt (not yet anyway -- I tried that concept!). You would think if I could find 14 Husky, then 14 Slims should be around too right? I don't know if they don't exist or everyone else is buying them. I did find some black dressier pants in 14 slims ages ago thankfully since that is what he needs for choir concerts.

I'm embarrassed for him as his pants are *way, way* too short but he would rather wear pants too short than ones too big around the waist.

Becky ~ Have you tried JC Penney? Looking on their website, it looks like there are some 14 slims there. A quick look at other stores shows that Levi's and Lee's are the main brands of 14 slims. Found those at Sears and Kohls too.

Thanks Kirsten! I haven't checked there as there isn't one really close but I WILL.

I don't want to buy too many as it is summer plus I'm sure he will outgrow those soon too but it would be good to have at least 1 or 2 pairs of pants that cover your socks! ;)(especially for church -- I am lenient with wearing jeans but not really shorts to church!)

Meg went through a growth spurt last year right around the wedding. She would come home from school, eat, finish homework and sometimes even she would tell us she was going to bed:confused3! On Saturday mornings she would eat alot but would be exhausted by 6PM! Because of this when we were getting her dress for the wedding I asked the tailor if she would mind keeping it a size more loose the when we started and not take up the length until a week before. I'm glad I did! She grew a couple, and no not exagerating, of inches in the last couple of weeks before the wedding! Crazy! I jsut bought her first size 0 jeans a couple weeks ago. . . And so it begins!

Oh also try Old Navy for the 14 Slims. They have many variations of the same size!

Good Luck!

Hi all! I was debating whether or not to start a new thread, but then I saw this one pop up on the Community Board. You guys seem friendly

I am getting ready to visit Chicago this Sunday - Tuesday for a business trip and this will be my first time in the windy city! I won't have too much down time for sight-seeing, but I do have just about all day Sunday and some of Monday. So... since ya'll are the professionals here, I'd thought I'd get your advice on what would be better to experience when I'm there.

I'm staying at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers with no vehicle... arriving early morning Sunday. Here are the places that peaked my interest when checking into things to do around the area:

Adler Planetarium
The Field Museum
Water Tower Place

How are these places? Any other suggestions? I certainly appreciate your advice and input. I figured who best to give sight-seeing advice than fellow DISr's?? :thumbsup2 Thanks! Have a great Friday!

Oh... and if anyone wants to hang out, that would be awesome!

Hi Emma's Dad.. you'll have a great time in Chi.. I would recommend the Adler and the Field.. great places.. Water Tower Place is shopping.. like any other mall.. but on North Michigan ave is the Disney store, the real Water Tower, Ghiradelli's, Hersey's ( if you like chocolate) apple store and many more..

Love chocolate! Check this out if you haven't heard already: https://secure.realchocolate.com/) Thanks for the tips.

Hi Emma's dad! I would recommend the Field museum or the Adler. Water Tower like Geffric said, is just a mall (an over priced, over taxed one if you ask me) The Field Museum is by far my favorite place to visit in the city. It definitely has a lot to see! The Adler is nice too but last summer, DF and I went for the first time in years and it only took us 2 hours to go through the whole thing! Hope you have a wonderful trip! :goodvibesSafe travels!:wizard:

Having grown up in the Chicagoland area, one thing I never learned to appreciate until I got older and started travelling on business is that Chicago has *everything*! Whatever you want to do, you can usually find it in Chicago. Chicago is famous for it's museums. The Field Museum and the Museum of Science and Industry being the two biggest. I've never actually been to the Adler Planetarium though. The Planetarium, the Shedd Aquarium and the Field Museum are all situated right next to each other, so you just walk from one to the other. Two favorites for many people at the Field Museum is the dinosaurs and the egyptian mummies.

If you want a nice place to relax, Navy Pier is good for that. Stroll along the pier, stopping into a few of the shops, enjoying a burger at the Billy Goat Tavern (Chees'borger! Chees'borger, no Coke, Pepsi!) or imbibing in an alcoholic beverage while sitting on a bench looking out over the largest fresh water lake on Planet Earth.

You can stop and have a nice meal at the restaurant on top of the John Hancock building, which is right next door to Water Tower Place. You can also hop a tour bus or trolley and enjoy a quick tour of the city. If the weather's nice, kick back at one of the beaches.

Chicago is all about the food. If you want some phenominal restaurants, check chowhound.com. They have a Chicago board there and those guys know everything about every eating establishment in the city. If you've never had it, you'll have to have an authentic Chicago deep dish pizza, a Chicago dog (properly dragged through the garden, *NO* ketchup!) and a beef (Italian Beef is a treat unique to Chicago. We live on 'em here). One of the many great places for beef and dogs is Portillo's and I believe there's one not far from the Sheraton. For deep dish, you can hit the original Pizzaria Uno's or Due's, or you can head over to Lou Malnotti's or Geno's. Any one of those will serve up a proper Chicago deep dish. Lou's and Uno's both claim title to inventing Chicago deep dish. Uno's usually get's the credit as the establishment that invented it. Lou Malnotti was the cook who invented it while working for Uno's, thus his claim that he's the inventor of it. We also have some great ethnic food in the city. Many of the dishes that Americans know as chinese food we developed in Chicago.

Taking a post and page at a time. bare with me please..
Can I brag about my child for a second?!
:thumbsup2 Absolutely! She is doing awesome!!! :goodvibes Good for her! Continued Praise for Stephanie!! :thumbsup2

Well today is graduation practice for Geoff.. last day he will be at the high school.. i guess it is real, my oldest is all grown up!! .. he graduates Sunday... then off he goes to college and beyond...
ConGRADulations to Geoff, and you! :cool1: I know the feeling, as Matt graduated college tonight! :woohoo: My "oldest baby" is 21. It's the 11yo that gives me fits. :headache:

I know I've found 10 & 12 SLIM for Kelly at Children's Place and Target, but those are for girls. Haven't checked for boys, sorry. Both places have adjustable waist bands, as far as I've found, go figure - they're already slim, and they have adjustable waistbands? - fine by me tho! Kelly needs them. Matt was husky, now he's slim again also, but an adult. ;)

:welcome: Emma's Dad! Is Emma traveling with you?

MY personal order of preference, not considering the back and forth traveling, would be Field, WTP, and then Adler. Obviously, if you look at a map, my preferences are OUT of order! JMHO tho! ;) Welcome to Chicago, also! Have a great time!

If you're traveling with 'Emma', you should check out AG store at WTP! :thumbsup2

While John has given you MORE than any of us, may I bring up a small, historical museum that I loved (as a kid)? The Chicago History Museum! I really loved that home-town, personal place. My grandma took us there when I was young. If you live in or near here, and/or you want to know OUR history, this is your first stop! ;) http://chicagohistory.org/

Good morning!

Slo Congrats to Stephanie

Becky Sorry I haven't had to shop for Slims for Alex. He always wore husky and now that he had slimed down he is in adult sizes.

John Have you ever thought about becoming a tour guide. ;) I know am craving a beef and pizza.

I have ton's of yardwork to do today. Last night my lovely dogs decided to run loose throught the nieghborhood. Oh the fun:headache: I have to go to the hardware store and get a sturdy lock so the kids around here can't let them out.
