C25K! Anyone else in?

I think I could run a little faster outside, but I'm a little nervous about falling off the treadmill or something. I probably won't run outside til after I complete the program when hopefully I won't be huffing and puffing so badly!

I feel this way about treadmills too! ha. So far I've been running at the track by my work which is FULL of people of all fitness levels. It really helps.

Me too! I have been running at a 5.0 for the last two weeks, but I'm scare I'll fall off if I go faster!

Hi Everyone
I'm VERY new to running and am currently in Week 2 of C25K. My goal is to complete the program and then move onto training to do the 2014 Princess Half Marathon. I'm 45...overweight (hopefully not for long) and have never been a runner...couldn't even say the word jog (LOL). But after my sister asking me to do the Half Marathon next year, I figured good as time as any....and it being a Disney Half...I'll be in my happy place so it's a win win!

Good luck everyone!

Welcome to the C25K group! I graduated a few weeks ago but I still lurk here from time to time! :) Best of luck to you!

Good for you!!! This is inspiring!! I'm so worried about getting through my 5k! Ahh! I have never been a runner either. Keep it up!! :cheer2:

You too!

Another question about treadmill speed...when you run at one speed & walk at another do you adjust the speed each time or do you program it into your treadmill?

I adjust it each time, because I don't know how to change it! I'm not even sure if our treadmills do that. lol

There is really something special about a mom and son's bond! My DS12 will be running the Expedition Everest Challenge with me. It will be his first Disney race! He is such an encouragement to me. My whole family is, but my son "gets me" on a different level when it comes to nutrition and exercise! And somehow I don't mind when he "encourages" me-- but heaven help my DH if he said the same thing! :lmao:

Mine and DS16's first race together was Everest, loved it!!
I agree, my kids can egg me on a bit, but DH, I'd probably drop kick him! LOL

What treadmill mph speed to you run/walk? I'm doing 3-3.5 mph for both the jog and walk. I'm on week 2...I've tried a higher speed but just can't keep up the pace. Just would like to know what speed everyone else is at.
Thanks

The first time I did it, I walked at a 3 -3.5 and ran at a 4. Right now I'm walking at a 3-4 and run at a 5.1-5.5.
You'll get there, it's all about building endurance and building endurance takes time.
When DS16 started running in the 4th grade, it took him 30 minutes to run 1.7 miles. Now, in the 11th grade, he can run a 5K in under 19 minutes.

I have to adjust the speed, I can't program it in. I used to be able program runs in it, but I let my iFit membership expire.

I'm on week 4, and I'm walking at 3.0 and running at 4.0. I hope to bump that up a bit in a couple of weeks. I adjust my speed each time. My treadmill could probably be programmed, but I'm lucky I can start the darn thing much less program it!

Also, since the last time I tried to run I ended up with a pretty nasty stress fracture, this time around I'm doing Jeff Galloway's run-walk-run strategy on my weekend long runs. Right now I'm running 20 seconds, walking 40 seconds until I reach the prescribed mileage. This weekend is 2 miles. :faint:

I just have to say... I LOVE reading your blog. I'm going to check out Jeff Galloway's plan. I'm so worried about getting shin splints. Ouch!

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you're enjoying it. I know it has helped me tremendously in holding myself accountable for my fitness goals... I really like Jeff's plan. You can find out a lot about him on the runDisney website. If you have any questions about the 5K plan, just let me know!

Week 3 day 2 on C25K

Run pace was 5.0 walk pace was a 3.0
Went pretty well. This was the first 3 minute run. Wanted to quit so bad around minute 2 but pushed through. Glad I did! I also added a few extra minutes to get to 31minutes. Total time running was 12 minutes, walking was 19. Made it 2 miles.

Also did Galloway 5K. Still liking this app overall better but I think I need to increase the run/ walk ratio. He run speed was a 5.5 and walk was a 3. 5.5 is pushing it for me a bit so I don't think I could do more than 90 seconds. And I definitely like his tips, they are good motivation. I just wish I could hear him more over the music. If I turn the music volume down it turns his volume down too. I think next time I will try headphones, I usually plug my phone into the treadmill because it has speakers. Also got 2 miles in on this workout as well, and 30 minutes.

Sent from my iPhone using DISboards

Finished w2 d1! I wasn't sure if I was ready to move on from w1, but I did ok. I increased my run speed to 4.4, but I decreased my walk speed to 2.9 because it allowed me to take longer strides and stretch my legs a little.

I didn't know there was an app! I will have to check that out!

Just bought a treadmill yesterday as I have been running laps in a gym (and switching direction to avoid injury) but it was rather boring and inconvenient.

Keep it up everyone!!!

Week 4, day 1 of C25K done! 73% of a 5K done! It is getting so much easier to run for longer periods of time!

Great job!!!

My ankles were swelling today... makes me a little nervous. I guess it's way over due... time to go get a physical.

Congratulations to everyone who has been out there running! You are all doing a fabulous job!!

This is so true! Yesterday I went to the store in the morning before the storm. As I parked the icy sleet/rain started coming down heavy. I ran across the parking lot (in my boots, no less) to get to the store, and what would have winded me just a few months ago was effortless. It felt good to know I was doing something for my stamina.

I had to skip my run the other day. I took a yoga class the day before my last run. We did a deep back of the leg stretch, and I was nervous I overdid it. But I felt ok the next day so went out to run. After that run the lower back part of my ankle started to swell a bit. I don't know if I hit it funny or overstretched it the day before, but I was in pain. I iced it, elevated it and took some anti-inflamatories. Today it finally feels back to normal, so I think I just bruised/overstretched a bit. But I really was bummed out to miss a run! I will get back out there again tomorrow and go slow (provided I can find some clear pavement to run on!).

In other news, I have set a lofty goal for myself - check out my new PTR in my sig line (the C2C one)!

That's fantastic! I have a story too. I went to get new running shoes today and try refit me. I was wearing the wrong size AGAIN, btw. She had me go outside and run so she could see my stride. I did it without being embarrassed and without getting winded! A huge victory!

Total breakthrough today! You all will be so proud. It was a pretty bad week for our house. We are getting back to normal- thank goodness. Instead of turning to food today, I redid my last run - Week 5 Day 2. I finished it then ran for 10 more minutes. I also did the Shred DVD.

This is major for me. I just hope our good fortune and overall health continues. I am so glad I have somewhere to share my joy. I know you guys understand the small victories add up to so much.

My husband also dangled a added bonus to get into gear. When I reach my goal we get to go to Disney! Woohoo- happy dance. He doesn't really like Disney so this is huge.

:thumbsup2 Awesome!!! And so glad you got the right size shoes!

Congratulations on all your "small victories" Although I don't think they are small! And being able to redirect away from food for comfort or to feel good is amazing!

WooHoo on DH offering you that prize!!

I also had a great running day today! After skipping Friday because of the pain in my heel, I felt great today and finally broke the 3 mile mark!! I have been hovering around 2.8-2.9 and today got to 3.01!!! And my foot feels much better :)

Happy running, everyone!

Does anyone use Runkeeper? I used it for the first time today and it shut off less than 5 minutes in!
