C25K! Anyone else in?

I ran more than 20 minutes last night (1.5 miles) and wasn't even planning on it! Instead of starting Week Five again, I just started running to see how far I could go. I aimed for 1/4 of a mile, which turned into 1/2, then 3/4 , etc.

The next thing I knew I had ran for 23 minutes straight and a mile and a half!!!!!!

I am still very slow, but I am so glad I was able to do that long run. I had been dreading it and honestly didn't think I was going to be able to do it! Now that I know I can do it I can't wait to do it again and try to improve my speed. And now I know I am ready to move on to Week Six!

I have a 10K coming up at the end of this month, and now I have hope I will be able to run a good bit of it...my goal is to run half of it.

:woohoo:Congratulations

When did you do W1D1?

I did day 1 Monday.

I usually run every other day even if I am sore. If it hurts to much just walk. I feel aches and pains all the time since I have never run before. Nothing has really been hurt though. If it feels like a pull stop is what I would say. Good luck

I would say I have aches and pains. When I was doing the running part I had stabbing pains in my shins but no pain at all there when I was done!

I would say these issues are fairly normal when starting out. The important things are to get a GOOD stretch and before you start the program and make sure you have a GOOD warm-up before you hit your first jog.

Great - thank you so much for the advice!! I'm planning on going out this afternoon. :goodvibes

okay, so I did w5d3 today. The dreaded 20 minute run. I DID IT!!! I am sooo sore and tired, but I did it. The last 2 minutes were very, very hard. But I am so proud of myself!

I am such a turtle, but a lady actually said to me "if I did that, I would die", and I did pass her while she was walking, so I am proud of that! :cool1:

Congratulations! That 20 minute run was the turning point for me. Once I realized I could run 20 minutes straight, the rest didn't seem as bad. Before the run, I really didn't think I could do it, so after, I decided that any distance is possible as long as I am working up to it slowly. I am not going to say or think, "I can't do that." I have now completed through W7D1, and although I am still not to the point where I enjoy every minute, I KNOW I can do it.

Unfortunately, I am taking a few days off because my shins are hurting. This is very difficult because the rest of my body and brain want to keep going, but I decided I don't want to make end up with a more serious injury, so I am going to rest my legs for a couple of days.

Keep up the great work!

W9D1 done!! How exciting. I ran a different route today and it made the time go by faster. 2 days left til I officially graduate C25K

Congrats! That's AWESOME!!!! I can't wait to get to that point. I'm on W4D2 and find that hard. Congrats to everyone else who is sticking to it!

Hello c25k'ers!

Today I have W1D2. My thighs are SORE, when I get up and down they burn, and the muscles around my ankles are sore. Should I still do the program? I am thinking go ahead and do it and if it hurts too much just walk, but I don't want to hurt myself and end up not able to do anything.

What do you think?

I am always sore! Once I get warmed up and into my 2nd run, I'm usually ok. As long as you don't think you have any pulls or shooting pains, I would try running through it, and if it hurts too much, then walk.

And on that note, I did w2d2 this morning. I was concerned again because my knee was bothering me last night, so I took some advil and iced it before bed. It was still a little sore this morning, but by time I warmed up it wasn't an issue.

I tried the C25K program the other day and failed miserably so maybe i'm doing something wrong? It said to walk 90 seconds, jog 60 seconds etc, but I was only able to job for about 20 seconds without getting winded. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You might have started out running too fast. The exact same thing happened to me back before Christmas. I started out trying to run way too fast and did so poorly that I almost didn't try it again.

It wasn't until late January that I had the guts to try it again, but this time I took a very slow pace. I am up to Week Five now, and each time I run now I have to watch my pace. I have realized that I am never going to be a fast runner, so I have learned to make sure my pace is comfortable.

Don't give up! Try it again, but take it a little slower. You can do it!!!

Well I took your advice and ran through the sore - and did it! Surprisingly today was easier than day 1.

I agree with the advice to slow down. I got very winded the first time too, and didn't make the whole minute each time, and found when I slowed down a little, it got better. I'm only on week 2, and feel very winded when I am jogging, I can't talk, but find by the last jogging stint, my breathing is a little more in control. Give it another try, with a slower jog. Good luck.

Whoo hooooo!!!! Nice work jenn!!

Awesome!! I'll be dreaming of that day.:cloud9:

I did W2D2 today, and it really feels good. When I started walking my shins were very tight and sore, but once I started running, they felt fine. During my first run, I could hardly make it the 90 seconds, but by the last one, my breathing was a little more controlled, and I felt like I might be able to run longer than 90 seconds. I am so inspired by all of you who have done this before me, and made me think that I can do it too.

woo hoo Kathy!!!:woohoo::woohoo: I think it's AMAZING how quickly our bodies improve - that's great!! I would never have thought you'd feel better while you're running.:goodvibes

Just the shins felt better, the knees, thighs and hips were another thing. Maybe the aching focus was just more spread out. I'm trying to be really good about stretching after too. I think that really makes a difference.
It is amazing how quickly our bodies do improve. I am really pumped to keep this up.

Hi there, sounds like everyone is doing well and moving along. I recommend stretching after, especially the calves to help the shins. Also some strength training for your calves helps the shins and quads helps the knees. Whenever I don't feel like doing the crosstraining days, I remind myself how much better I'll feel when I run.

Yesterday I did Week 6 Day 1 twice to get to the 4 miles that I need for my long run this week. I'm following a 10K training plan and doing C25K at the same time. Thank goodness I only have to do the long distance once a week.

Great idea on the strength training for calves! I'm going to add that in.

What stretching does everyone do? I stretch my quads, calves, and hamstrings...I don't feel like it's enough though.:confused3

I just wanted to stop in for a little cheering. :cheer2: You guys are doing great. I about failed the mile run in middle school and high school every year. I did the C25k Fall 2009. Running is completely different now - easier and more fun. And it's cool to be better at a physical activity than I was in my teens.
Keep with the program and you will be amazed at what you can achieve! It sounds cliche, but it's completely true. :thumbsup2

Ok guys, send a little mental motivation my way today. I have a looong day ahead of me, registering kids for kindergarten next year. At work till 6. I really, really want to run this evening, but we're supposed to have rain. It will be my first run in heavy rain, after sitting in a hard chair all day. So at 6, send some :goodvibes my way that I'll do it.

I also have to share, my DH is really obese. 400 lbs. He's been so inspired by me he's starting the C25K. He started yesterday, and just power walked the run segments. I told him to stay with that for a month or so, to get his body acclimated. I am so proud of him for taking this step!

How GREAT for your family that your DH is doing this!! And that's where you can get your motivation from - you are an AWESOME example for your family! The times you dragged yourself out there and felt better after you did have also inspired your sh.:cheer2:

I did my w1d2 today. I was going to do it yesterday but, Tuesday afternoon my back suddenly was in really bad pain. I went to the chiro yesterday and it is still really sore but, I was able to run. I did have the same problem with my left foot again right around the same time too. I am wondering if it isn't swelling a bit and pushing on something. I am going to run in my old shoes Saturday and see if that makes a difference. As soon as I take my shoes off I am fine.
