C25K! Anyone else in?

:wave2: Hi everyone! I have been debating on doing c25k for about a year now, but one of my biggest obstacles has been living in the country in MN and it being very cold (and I don't like cold!) and not having good roads to run on (lots of back country gravel roads that remain ice covered all winter, etc). I have finally found a good track to run indoors at a local university year round, and have been walking there 3-4 days a week since the beginning of the year. I'm ready to start doing c25k, but I wanted to know how you figure out when you need to change your intervals?

Thanks!

:welcome: Glad you were able to find somewhere that works for you. :thumbsup2

Many of us use Robert Ullrey's podcasts that are available for free on iTunes or at his website:

Ullrey's Podcasts

He plays music (very upbeat) and tells you when to walk/run.

Others use an app for the iPhone that lets you use your own music and just dings when it's time to change intervals.

Otherwise, it's just a matter of watching the clock!

W5D1 done!!! This is becoming addictive. I dont even want to skip days. I hope it doesnt mess me up but I really wanted to give it a go today. My breathing was great again. Something snapped yesterday in my mind or with my body. My breathing just regulated itself like ZOOMAMA said hers did. I also found the decrease in intervals way easier once again. 3- 5min segments was much easier than the 3/5 thing. I again added that half mile to the end and did it faster today in 5min 42 sec. So I had a total of 4 - 5min runs. I am still in shock really. I never thought I would come this far this fast. I am treating myself to one of those arm band timer things for my 1/2 mile goal being met. I am currently using my sons madagascar watch and using the seconds setting :rotfl: guess it was better than nothing.

Keep it up if I can do this anyone can. Believe me. I have 60 pounds more to loose and was a total couch potatoe.

WOW!

I'm sidelined for a few days-sinus infection/bronchitis. I hope I don't lose too much ground.

Tomorrow I do week 6day 3 the dreaded 25 minute run! I need great music when I run. What is your favorite song to run to? I need to update my playlist for tomorrow. Currently I like the Black Eyed Peas "i Gotta Feeling" and the theme song to Rocky :)

Imma be by B.E.P, Yeah! by Usher. Party like a rockstar by nickelback, baby got back , Right Round by Flo Rida, Rump Shaker by Wreckxneffex. Sometimes, Loser by Beck. End of the World by R.E.M.

Anyone else have a love/hate relationship? It's like I love it when I'm done, hate it at some point during the run, and can't wait/dread the next one???

On the long runs, I usually find myself going through ups and downs where I think I can't make it another minute and then periods where I'm ok and just moving along. I used to have a friend to run with and luckily we usually hit those periods at different times and could push each other through. Now I have to push myself through knowing that it will eventually pass. I love how I feel when it's over!

I started C25K about a year ago and finished with the Race for the Cure in June of last year. I've been doing run/walk intervals since then and just trying to put in consistent miles, sometimes working on speed, sometimes distance.

I hope you are feeling better soon. The weather here has been crazy and has me sniffly too.

I like Kris Allen Live like your Dying. Great upbeat tune.

I love the one that's out for the new Nike/Olympics commercial - Ali in the Jungle by The Hours.

Hey all.
I posted earlier, but was on hold with the c25k for awhile, but hopped back on.
I was wondering how fast you all run? I am stuck on alternating running 2 minutes walking 2 and then running 3 and walking 2. I'm pretty sure it's not on the schedule but I made it up for myself. I've been doing it for about 2 months and I'm wondering why I'm not able to move forward with this. I'm running at 6mph, so I'm wondering if I'm running too fast or if it's just the fact that I work slower than others?

You are running way to fast. Bump that down to 4-4.5. My husband has ran for years and doesnt even do a 6 ususally 5.5. The walk intervals at about 3.5. Now that was from my treadmill days. Now I have no idea I do this outside.

did W4D2 today. It wasn't any easier than day 1, but I was able to complete the first three run intervals (3 min, 5 min, 3 min) and then did 3 minutes out of the last 5. I just set a goal in my head today and made my body follow through - even though it didn't want to. ;) Saturday I'll try to get 4 out of the last 5 minutes and then repeat this week at least another day, maybe more.

You can do this. I'm on the same day as you. If you're getting 3 out of 5 minutes you're over the hump...you can finish the 5! Are you outside or on a treadmill?

Yup. Exactly what she said. ;) I'd say bump your runs down to 4.5 and see how that goes. If you're able to do that easily then maybe try 5, but I wouldn't go any higher than that until you can run for longer periods. You want to build endurance first and then build your speed later. I can do shorter run intervals at 4.2/4.3, but I get tired faster. Right now I mostly go at 4.0 for my runs and 3.5 for my walks.

I run on a treadmill. My husband is deployed and I homeschool our boys so no time alone to get out and run right now. I know I can do it. I know it's mainly a mental thing with me. That's why I'm adding a minute each day. I'm almost there! :cool1:

I'm with you. Have to think aggressive. That helps me. I'm 240 lbs.

Does anyone know what the difference is running outside vs running on a treadmill. I was just curious.

The turtle has finished week w2!!! Scared about the next week, but stressing over that 3 min. run now will do nothing for my mindset when I do it, so I'm not thinking about it!

Do you mean which is harder/easier? I've heard some say that running outside is a bit harder because you don't have the treadmill propelling you forward. But, I've also heard some say they run faster when outside. Could be because of the environment being more motivating.

Woohoo for finishing week 2! :cheer2: You can do week 3! It was easier for me going into it knowing that I gave myself permission to only do part of the 3 minutes if it got really hard. You don't need to go into day 1 thinking you have to run all of the run intervals right away. Try to do it and push yourself harder than normal (like when you want to quit, make yourself go a bit longer), but allow yourself to build up to the 3 minutes if you need to.

Also, week 3 only has 4 run intervals and that seemed easier mentally.

Hmmm. I thought maybe it was better because BL always uses treadmills. I currently run outside and it is frustrating no knowing how fast you are really going during each phase.

The good news:
W5D2 in the books. Done! Also I hit another major goal for myself. At the 8 min mark I could see where a mile was and I pushed myself to get to that mile mark. It was much further than I thought though. It took me 12min 28 sec to go one mile. For the first time in my life I was able to run one mile straight. Could someone punch in 12:28 on their treadmill and see how fast I was going.

The bad news: after reaching that mile goal I was feeling a little nauseated. I ate before I ran something I never do. The last 8 min nearly killed me because of that and then my legs felt like cement. I made it through but barely. Breathing seems to adjust between 2-3 min. Now I am feeling my age though. :rotfl: I am getting a little sore after my runs but doing motrin and a hot bath and it seems to be fine by the next day.

I managed to do the 5K in 44 min today so I think that would qualify me for the Disney time they allow. I think it was either 15 or 16 min per mile allowed. So overall a great day but I did struggle through alot of my run today.

There isn't any way for me to put that into my treadmill and find out, but a 12 minute mile is going 5.0 so you were just a tad slower than that.

I've been good with not being sore as long as I stretch really well. But, I have a feeling that will change when I start running for longer periods.

You have to maintain at least a 16 minute mile for the half marathon. Great job today! :thumbsup2
