Do they need to be? I understand the need for gas stations and small grocery stores/drug stores being open for travel and emergencies, but couldn't we live without big stores like Kmart/Walmart (which are open on TGiving Day) and restaurants being open? Mainly, this could be a small vent on my part. I waitress at a nice restaurant which is open on the 4th! I couldn't request off since I just had a long vacation. Will anyone really be dining out on the 4th?

I usually dine out or carry out on the 4th.

I have a very small family, fairly scattered and no one does anything! We generally will carry out ribs and other picnic food.

I've also been to K-Mart on Thanksgiving!;) I actually moved over a Thanksgiving weekend and I needed some stuff. Thank God they were open and the store was busy. There are a good number of people, especially in urban areas that really don't do some of the holidays like Thanksgiving, Easter, Christmas, etc.

Sorry you have to work.

We dine out on many holidays. Because of a custody situation my Dh and I only have my DD every other Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc. On the years when she's with her bio-dad we almost always eat out: Thanksgiving, New YEars, Christmas, Easter, Mothers Day, etc. because it's hard for me to be home on those days without her. We may very well eat on the 4th.

I don't think it's weird for retail places and restaurants to be open on holidays. That's when they do a lot of business!

A lot of businesses cannot afford to be shut on holidays, they need the revenue.
Whenever we are in Florida over a holiday we always eat out and the restaurants are always busy.

I guess it depends on the business and holiday...yes, a nice restauraunt would most likely be open on Christmas Eve and Easter Sunday. They make for a nice family gathering. I don't really think the establishment I work at should be open on the 4th. It will be beyond dead. I understand stors being open on Memorial and Labor Days, as lots of people choose that day to shop or do home repairs.

Mari- XH will have the kids this holiday, so it is not as big of a deal for me. They will bbq and see fireworks, just not with me! I understand the custody thing, though, completely!
Christine- Thanks for the ! I always feel bad, though, for the people at Kmart of TGiving or whatever. I do admit to going to a sale or two on that morning, but if they didn't have those sales, I wouldn't go! I'd be home cooking!

Sorry you're working!
I'll be in the same boat as you this weekend- I'm working Saturday and Sunday. Blah.

You haven't experienced my family. I did not grow up with the Waltons. You do NOT want to be with them then. :headache: Shopping or working is preferable. :thumbsup2

As for restaurants being open, I would go there with close friends or ex-roommates on holidays. None of us could cook then. None of us would want to eat each other's food either. :scared1: :p

I grew up in the 50's and nothing was open on Sunday. I loved it when stores and restaurants started to open on Sundays. And being a night owl I really love the 24 hr. grocery stores and Super K's.:thumbsup2

Well, we all like to go to Disney World. And in order for us to do that on a holiday, think about how many people have to work. What if Disney World closed down because it was a holiday?

It's a nice thought to be closed on holidays, but it's a hard thing to do in this day and age.

What kind of restaurant do you work at?

But to answer your question, we do like going out on holidays. In fact, we'd planned on going for sushi on the 4th and I had DH call the place we like to see if they were open because they tend to close a lot on holidays. They're closed, but two other sushi restaurants are open. I bet they'll be busy too.

I work in healthcare, so anytime I get a holiday off its nice. But we are open 365.

I do go out to eat sometimes on holidays. Just depends on the plans we have.

We'll be going out of town to a B&B and eating at their restaurant, so yes, people go out and do things other than just stay home on holidays. IN fact, this is only the second year since I've known hubby that he has it off; he's worked in online retail since I met him (we met while working at Amazon). When people have days off of work, they call Amazon, they shop, they buy, they eat...not everyone sits at picture perfect picnics!

Hopefully you'll either be busy enough to make some good money, or the restaurant will be SO quiet the bosses will send you home early.

What really got me when I was serving people would say. I'm so sorry you have to work on a Holiday. I also wanted to say well stay home then lol

We sure will. I don't want to cook on a holiday.

Stores need to be open when customers want to buy things. Restaurants need to be open when diners want other people to cook and clean up.

I would love to be closed, however as long as my customers keep coming in how can I be?

my store is open on the 4th (babies r us) :sad2: although we do close at 8:00 PM. How likely is it that someone needs to shop at BRU on the 4th?? It's not like we sell BBQ items or food etc.

I'm glad places like that are open...not everyone has something to do on the holidays and it's nice that there are at least places to go. sometimes you just gotta do some grocery shopping or you would prefer to eat out.

Mushy-I work at a high-end Italian place, similar to Maggiano's.
happygirl-:lmao:No kidding!
cepmom-:hug:At least you close early! Also, since I am not a closer (meaning I don't have to stay until the end) I will get to leave when it "dies" down.

I work all weekend, so we'll see how it goes. I will probably be really dead the whole thing! I worked black Friday and you think it would have been busy (lunch was steady) but it was bad! One of the worst days ever! Everyone must have been tired of eating!
