Bush was told levies could break ....

Anybody else catch Faux News tonight? The way they report this story is to splice the AP footage to imply that the "liberals" are making a big deal out of nothing.

If only the ostrages would get their heads out of Faux News long enough to look at some real news reports, maybe Bu$h's rating wouldn't still be a high as 34%.

It must be a slow news day for the AP. Lets not forget when and who released the video. The White House did....on August 28th.

Dawn, do you have a cite or a link supporting this? I see a lot of news on both sides of the political spectrum, and your post is the only thing I've seen anywhere claiming this.

Thanking you in advance....

Living in south Texas, I have seen my share of hurricanes and their problems. I remember watching the approach of Hurricane Katrina and listening to local radio discuss and wonder why New Orleans was not being evacuated as early as Thursday and Friday before it hit. They relaled a comparision as to how Houston would have already been under an evacuation order. (and this was before it ever hit New Orleans not after) Unfortunately, the New Orleans leadership weakness was shown when they finally issued the order too late to get everyone out.

A few weeks later we saw just how Houston handled an evacuation much better, although they have since had to work out many of their own problems with their plan.

The point is local leadership is where the solutions to these problems have to be handled. There is no one size fits all federal solution to a local problem. I sure would not want to see some federal official come down and try to tell us how to evacuate when they do not understand the area. Fortuantely for us, Houston's strong local leaders (of each Party) were up to the problem.

Logical and appropriate how refreshing.

As stated, many people seemed to believe that the Superdome would be safe and a good place to ride out the storm. They would have been correct too if only the levees hadn't breached.

Yes, an astounding failure by state and local officials for this plan.

Okay, you lost me here. I thought we were having a serious discussion, but you're joking now, right? If you really think that, then there's no reason to attempt a serious discussion at this point.

Sadly, these threads are never about serious discussion. They're only purpose is to point blame and attempt to sully someone or another.

They take a video clip and then twist and lie about its contents, never stopping to consider that listening to the tape disproves their point. I guess they hope that people will take their word for it and not folllllow up.

Their motto: "Do not let a bunch of facts get in the way of me forwarding my position, no matter the degrre to which I have to lie".

The news was broadcasting here in NY as you put it "thousands of miles away" that they thought the hurricane may be heading in the direction of New Orleans days bf they knew for certain, maybe they were not sure exactly until Fri but were speaking days beforehand of the possible catastrophic event if a class 4 or 5 hurricane hit New Orleans. When I speak of "they" in my other posts, I mean everyone from local government up to the President and I have never stated Bush was completely at fault anywhere in my posts. And just for the record, the word is "mandatory." Now I'm going back to reading some of the happy posts about Disneyworld, hehe.
(In my best impersonation of Scarlet O'Hara)..."Well, gosh don't you darn yankees know evr'thang! Your so brave and wonderful! Yall should have let us know so we could get the heck outa here..."

BTW I don't spell well, but at least I know a thing or two about hurricanes.

Well said!

And furthermore:

Mayor Nagin and Governor Blanco had even MORE warning, and they drizzled away time and opportunity to act. It would not have been possible to have sufficiently shored up the levees, within the span of time available, even if the Mayor and the Governor had acted with alacrity (which they seemed unable to do), but a much greater evacuation could have been effected.

You ever been to New Orleans, Joe??? The only ways out were blocked for hours and that was as soon as they were told about a voluntary evacuation. it took people over 10 hours to go 30 miles. People started leaving as soon as they knew it was headed for LA and not FL.

As if all of your posts are full of unbiased facts and no personal opinions whatsover, right? Excuse me while I get my shovel and put my boots on.

I think everyone in the country knew within reason the levees would fail. I called my dad 3 days before it hit and asked him if they still had the pictures from our last 'nawlins trip, because we'd need them to remember the city. I honestly don't think W. really cared. Barbara sure did when she found out 'those people' may be choosing to stay and live in Texas, didn't she?

My point (poorly worded) is that the Superdome was implied safe and many people trusted that to be true. It worked out well as far as winds went but turned out to be a horrible choice in other ways.

It's true that the mayor failed and the governor failed. It was clear to anyone with a TV that they were failing all along. If they had never acted, would the feds finally step in without being asked? I don't buy that the feds had to wait and wait and wait while the other government agencies floundered around.

I totally believe that ALL levels of government failed New Orleans.

I want to make it clear i have not read this thread. But one of my GOOD FRIENDS MrsKreamer told me she was being attacked here for basically IMO no ryhme or reason. So please leave her alone. She has her opinions you have yours. The END. Please leave her alone or you will just force me to stay here. And believe me you dont want that. Yup!
don't get why some on both sides seem to deny that. The locals failed before the storm. The Federal govt failed way before for not securing the levees and also post storm to this day.

Let me tell you how it all played out, like Mrs. Kreamer, straight from the horse's mouth. Lord knows I'll never forget it.

The week before the hurricane all the local mets and ones on professional meteorology message boards (I lurk on them during hurricane season) were calling this a Florida event until late Friday afternoon. And even then, things were just starting to look bad for us - Katrina hitting New Orleans was still a long shot. It wasn't until Saturday morning that it started looking really bad for New Orleans. I'll never forget it, I woke DH up and said start packing - we need to get out of here. I got on the phone with one of my best friends who was preparing too and she told me how bad the traffic was already - taking hours to get out of neighborhoods in the suburbs. Her brother is friends with one of the local chief mets who said, "this is going to be bad. Tell everyone in your family to get out." I rushed everyone around and we were out by 1pm.
