Bush sets record-longest vacation in recent history

I didn't hear any specific reference to you. We've been talking in generalities, but you just sound like someone who did not experience the Vietnam era -- either that, or someone my parents age.

Thank God we have people who are willing to give their lives for us -- the abuse of their sacrifice has to stop.

There are probably many that are in harms way that don't feel like that. I'm sure some do but you're making a sweeping generalization based on *your* feelings.

Btw, I'm not denigrating the 95% of the population who choose not to volunteer for military service. I'm denigrating that segment of the population who talk about how "WE" are fighting this war and how "WE" believe in what Bush is doing. At the same time this "WE" is doing their fighting from their keyboards and their water coolers.

And she can use her loss for whatever damned reason she chooses including a symbolic slap at Bush.

Those of us who are fighting from their keyboards and their water coolers are the backbone of the economic system that supports our military forces. Take that away and where would the find the necessary funds to support what they do?

Ms. Sheehan can do whatever she wants with her grief and loss. I am free to say it is a sad, pitiful thing to do. I have more respect for those who find productive ways to manage their grief/loss than to attempt to pander to partisan politics. However, to each their own.

What did this comment mean, if not that a President shouldn't take vacations during war?

You know when my DH's company has problems, and none involve people dying, he and the management team do not take vacations.

I was 9 years old in 1970. And before you start your "Oh you're too young to remember", don't. I've been an avid news hound for as long as I can remember, which is way before 9, and I had relatives in the war, so I was very aware of what was going on in the country at that time.

Student protests in the 60s seem very extreme - you sound just like my parents' generation tisk tisking the protesters -- but thank god they made you know whats of themselves or the Vietnam fiasco would have been worse than it even was.

About the vacation thing, I was just thinking about when there have been big problems and how we've cancelled trips and how seriously DH takes his obligation. And yet we have a president who is setting a record. That wouldn't fly in corporate america -- but then again, Bush never did much good in corporate america, either.

So then be consistent about it...I would say that WWII was a pretty "big problem", so using your logic, I guess that FDR shouldn't have been sitting in the warm water with his cookie while the war was raging overseas and people were dying.

If one takes a vacation then it follows that one does not take their obligations seriously?

I have, on occasion, rescheduled vacation time to fulfill obligations. However, more often than not, I consider my well-earned time off just as important as my obligations. Vacations are an essential part of one's work.

However, it will never cease to amaze me that there are people who believe the President actually gets a real vacation like the rest of us get... meaning actual time off work.

Of course someone questioned that right - you. YOU made the statement that your DH doesn't take vacations when things aren't going well, the implication being that the President shouldn't either. Why not be honest and just admit that you have one standard for this President and a different standard for all of the others?

Then by all means, enlighten us. How are his vacations different than the vacations of any other President? Do they not all take part in leisure activities while they're away from Washington? Those two comments kinda contradict themselves. If no one has questioned the Presidents right to take "some" time off, why does it matter that he's supposedly set a new record at doing it?

The fact is "some" is relavtive and "some" people have a real problem with that amount.
