Bread Pudding-is it a Southern thing?

Everyone in my family loves bread pudding except for me.

We have been making it in our family for years, my Mom made it when we were little and I make it now for my family. I always thought it was sort a New England thing.....but I guess it is made in the South too. I have lived in MA my whole life.

I love bread pudding, we have it quite a lot over here in England. My MIL makes the best bread pudding ever!!
Is it the same thing as bread and butter pudding?

I haven't had either but I'm pretty sure that bread and butter pudding is British.

My Aunt makes a chocolate bread pudding that is to DIE for! A little whipped cream on warm pudding- Yummy!

My Mom made it with apples and then served it hot with Brigham's French Vanilla ice cream....I am really going back in time thinking about that..

I make many variations but my girls like it with semi-sweet chocolate in the recipe and also the spice cardamon....served hot with vanilla ice cream. I have a cookbook just with recipes of bread pudding.. I do believe it originated in England as well.

My favorte bread pudding recipe is from a old Pennsylvannia dutch receipe:

1 quart stale bread

2 cups milk

1/2 cup sugar

2 eggs

1/4 teaspoon nugmeg

1 hand full raisins

I break up the bread and place in a buttered baking dish.

sprinkle the raisins over the bread.

The remaining items I cheat and throw into a blender to mix well.

Pour this mixture over the bread and raisins. Let set until bread is throughly moistened.

Bake in over at 350 for about an hour.

Yummy!!!!

sometime I subsitute apples for the raisins.

This just takes minutes to prepare too. I like to make this whenever I have stale bread. It is delis both warm or chilled in the frig. :teeth:

A few places around here have it. DW loves it, and when it comes with the whiskey sauce, I like it too. :)

The Diner where I waitress has it Monday - Thursday on their lunch/dinner buffets. They make it with cinammon and raisins, and have lemon sauce to pour over it too. It's delicious!! People love it!! And I'm in Michigan, so it's not just a Southern thing. :)

It is my favorite dessert. No raisins or nuts. And DEFINITELY no sickeningly sweet sauce on it!

My friend's Mom makes it whatever stale bread they have around (hot dog buns, whole wheat, etc). It comes out great everytime. Basically there's so much sugar and cream in it that you can't taste the bread!

The best bread pudding I've had was a chocolate croissant pudding! Talk about decadent!

Heres the recipe from Ohanas

5 large eggs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
3 cups whole milk
1 loaf challah bread or egg-style bread (large enough to fill 10 cups)
1/2 cup crushed, canned pineapple
1/4 cup sweetened shredded coconut
1/4 cup raisins (optional)
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1/2 gallon of vanilla bean ice cream

Sauce:

1 cup dark brown sugar
1/2 cup each: corn syrup and unsalted butter
1 cup each: heavy cream and
spiced or dark rum
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 bananas

1. Heat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, salt, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut bread in 1/2-inch cubes. Add bread, pineapple, coconut, and raisins (if desired) to egg-and-milk mixture. Grease large baking dish with butter. Add bread custard mix to the greased baking dish. Bake 1 hour and 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Let stand 5 minutes.

2. In a sauce pan, combine dark brown sugar, corn syrup, butter, and half of the heavy cream. Using high heat; bring to a rolling boil. Allow mixture to boil 10 minutes and add remaining heavy cream. Let it boil additional minute. Now add the rum and vanilla extract. Carefully flambe pan using a long stemmed lighter. Let boil until the flame goes out. Reduce to a simmer and stir with a high heat spatula. Peel and slice bananas; add them to the caramel sauce. Remove the caramel from the heat and set aside.

3. Place scoop of ice cream on top of each portion of bread pudding. Top with bananas Foster sauce.

Recipe note: Make the sauce as bread pudding is baking to have both hot and ready to serve at the same time.
