Booked SW today...how does seating work?

We haven't flown SW since 2008 and am confused about seating. I didn't see an option to book your seats? We have four kids...will we all, be together? I didn't want to pay the $12.50 per seat each way for early boarding.

Also, what was the $5 fee I paid when I booked using my RR points?

There are no assigned seats, it's open seating. You get a boarding letter and number and that determines the order that you board. You pick any open seats when it's your turn. The early boarding fee gets you an earlier boarding spot. If you get a later letter/number, you may not find seats together. How old are your kids? Age 4 or under can board between A & B, sometimes if there are too many that age they will suspend it. The $5 fee is the government tax that all airlines have to pay.

My daughter is 4...but my husband has a aerate reservation with my other two older children. So basically if you check in the earliest you can you should get an A?

More and more people are buying early bird so even at 24 hours you could be in the B's. I got B25 last time at 24 hours without early bird.

They may allow family boarding for all of you but may restrict it to 1 adult and the 4 year old. Or they can suspend it all together but I've never seen that.
