Biggest Tragedy you ever had

Tragedy not really more like an inconvenience.

Worst vacation was thanksgiving in fla, we drove down had a great time.

Coming back was a nightmare. We stopped over in Orlando for a night. Went to Downtown Disney, ate at T-Rex. I got food poisoning, up all night throwing up, just miserable.:sick::sick::sick:

Next morning didn't feel any better we got all the way to Jacksonville,fl and got a flat tire. Fixed it. Made it to Statesville, NC next morning still sick and 5 miles on to freeway flat tire. Fixed it. took us 48 hr to get home instead of normal 17/19 hrs

Kick in the but was the tires where all less then 4 months old. And the car stank like death for a week after being home.

T-Rex's crappy food made me sick for 5 days. I will never go inside there again. Even reading about T-Rex makes my stomach turn.

Those sound awful, I'm so sorry you went through those. But just curious did these happen on a vacation? The thread topic is tragedies that happen on vacation

Oops.. I missed that. However, the Strep did we were vacationing in Florida. My dh, myself, and our sons 8 & 2 year olds at the time. We believe I picked it up in a hotel hot tub. I've never gotten in one since. I think of it as tragic because I feel some of the health ailments I have suffered since may be a result of that infection.

I used to think hot tubs were nice but now I think they are a hotbed of bacteria! Scares me. I'm sorry that happened to you! :grouphug:

Exactly! That vacation was in the late 70's first time we had ever seen a hot tub. Also, first and last time as said I've been in one.

Only thing I can think of was couple years on our way up to TN from Florida we had a tire issue and filled it with air got a little down the road and the tore needed to be filled up again. Think hubby put fix a flat in it till we could head to nearest Walmart. This was a brand new car and we had 4 new tires put on right before we left for the trip at Sams. Well evidently Sams had put the wrong sized tires on and the rims rubbed into the tire causing it to loose air. What a nightmare!! And Walmart wouldn't honor Sams(I thought they were under the same corporation) so we had to get all 4 new tires. And naturally they didn't have our size and it would take 3 days. UGH!! I was freaked out and livid at this point lol. Thankfully this same Walmart had a car rental place at front of store and naturally only thing they had was gas guzzling SUV to rent. So this broke our budget needless to say but it could have been much worse. I shudder to think what would have happened especially to my husband commuting to work. And we took the 4 bad tires back to Sams to get our money back. No one said sorry or anything. Hubby told me to wait in car cause I was gonna rip someone a new one. :lmao: But I will have to admit the trip to TN and NC was wonderful.

I've had stuff happen numerous times while out of town. First, my dad died of a heart attack when i was 16 and on a girl scout campout. My mom and grandmother drove up to get me.

Had a belt break in our van in Florida as we were a few miles away leaving the in laws. Another trip, watched a girl flip her car three times on the interstate right in front of us. We stopped and dh and dmil pulled her from her car, we waited until help arrived. Thankfully, she was ok.

Had 2 tires blowout on 2 different trips to dhs family reunions 7 hours away. Drove home on the spare for 5 hours one of those trips. Still need to replace the bumper on the van from last year's blowout.

I almost miscarried ds now 20 when dh and I were in Hawaii. I was 14 weeks pregnant. Had a scare with bleeding, went to hospital and told to expect a miscarriage. Stopped bleeding the next day (after dh sent the volcanic rock back that we picked up from the volcano after warned not to, but we weren't superstitious) and was sent to rest at dmils for an extra week before we could fly home.

On a road trip now. Fingers crossed and pixie dust nothing happens.

We were at the MK on 9/11.

My husband and I were in Jamaica celebrating DH's 40th birthday.
My mom and her fiance were watching our kids.
A couple days into our trip , my moms fiance's son was killed in a car accident.

My mum's best friend attempted suicide the night before I left on an overseas trip with school, but she didn't tell me until a few days later. While away my aunt had surgery to remove a lump. They didn't tell me until she found out it was just a harmless cyst.

My DD3 tripped on our first day at WDW and broke the fall with her face. Her tooth cracked in half and went into her lip and her face and body was all bloody and bandaged for all the pictures. But she was still happy and had no pain, so if that's the worst tragedy we ever experience, I consider us lucky.

in the mid nineties we took a camping trip. It was me, DH, our DDs, 2 and 4, my friend, my brother my sister and her boyfriend and we met BIL,SIL neice and nephew at the campground.

We had a Suburban and first problem was when DH closed the tailgate and the glass shattered. The Suburban was heavily loaded and when we went up some steep hills in Maine, the transmission would slip. We had just had the transmission rebuilt so it was worrying.

But the worst thing of all was DD2 was on an antibiotic, Ceclor. She had had it before with no side effects but this time she swelled up and her feet, ears and fingers turned black. So we had to rush her to a two room emergency room to get it treated. She was given benedryl and a different antibiotic and we finished up the trip without further problems.

When we got home we had to pay to have the window replaced and it took a few more days in the shop before the transmission worked correctly.

DD is now 19 and at college. She was ill earlier this year and the clinic wanted to give her Ceclor. Luckily she remembered that was not a good idea.

I was six months pregnant with my first. DH and I decided to take a camping trip to the poconos. We had a little old vw bug and our dog. First on the way there the dog leaned over the seat and puked all over me. We pulled over and a state trooper pulled over to see what we were doing. He looked at me and the dog and couldn't stop laughing. I was really covered in it. Then we got to the mountains and it was much colder then I thought. Didn't have warm enough gear. The steps to the cabin were covered in ice. It was late. We ended up folding down the seat and all sleeping in the back of the volkswagon bug. Fun times. Not really tragic. Just kind of comical. We've had worst in terms of inconvenience such as a car breaking down full of kids and Christmas gifts on Christmas eve morning with nobody open.

Several years ago, we went on a family beach vacation. My 80 year old grandmother came with us. On our first full day there, the whole family, except for Granny and one of my nephews went for a walk on the beach. As we were coming back to our house, my nephew came running towards us and said that Granny fell.

As it turns out, Granny had walked outside with flip flops on and tripped on the "boardwalk" style sidewalk. She fell on her side and because of a prior shoulder injury couldn't get up.

The neighbor next door, saw her fall and had come over to help. She had called an ambulance. Once the EMT's got there, they insisted on taking Granny to the hospital even though she said she was fine. They kept saying though that she should get checked out.

So, they take her to the ER. The ER does a X-Ray of her head since she did bump it and they find a brain tumor. The ER doctors is convinced that its malignant (they say this without doing any other testing other than one x-ray). He says that she needs to go to another hospital an hour away and will most likely need emergency surgery. Of course, the doctors keep insisting the tumor caused her to fall. (But we all think she really tripped, as I also tripped in that same area later in the week). So, off she and my parents go to this other hospital. They run all kinds of tests, keep her overnight. Diagnosis---- a benign tumor that she has probably had for many years. No surgery needed.

So, after all that she spends one night in the hospital. But spends the whole vacation black and blue. She had a black eye and her shoulder was so sore she couldn't lift her arms the whole time. Luckily though she didn't break anything which is a miracle at her age.

So, while not at tragic as it could have been had the ER doctor been correct, it certainly was a very stressful start to our vacation!

This is 'tragic' but

Over 15 years ago we were going on vacation with DH's family, the entire family. 25 people. HIs sister had rented out an entire B&B in Marblehead OH. I wasn't excited about going in the first place. We were going to Cleveland for a night or 2 before heading the Marblehead. As we were driving to Cleveland up I-77 the luggage DH strapped to the top of the car flew off. It was the piece of luggage with all of my clothes for the week. :rolleyes2 My clothes were scattered all over I-77 in Charleston WV because a truck had run over the suitcase.

I don't know if you would call it a tragedy, but as a child my family only went on two vacations. On the second one, we drove to Cape Cod and my parents got into a big fight on the drive down. My father dropped us at one hotel and then drove off and checked himself into another hotel somewhere else. My mom was left with no car, very little money (she had no credit cards) and us four kids. Fortunately our hotel was close to the beach so we spent most of our time there. They did make up again after several days so we were able to drive home but it was not a very fun vacation. They had fought a lot on our first vacation, too, so we never had another one.

Not sure where to start...

Dh & I had been trying to get pregnant for two years and not having any luck. We got a great deal on a cruise and were looking forward to it when I found out I was pregnant. About a week before the cruise I had some spotting and went to dr. He did and ultrasound and we saw baby with a heartbeat. He said everything was fine and we could go on cruise. So our first night on the ship there was a really bad storm. The next morning people were throwing up all over the place (including dh) and I was just managing to keep it together. The next day we docked in Cozumel and dh and I were so happy to be on solid ground again. We started walking around and checking everything out. As the day progressed I started cramping and bleeding and knew what was happening.

We went back to the ship, and since we were docked they had to call the ship doctor. He proceeded to lecture me about taking a cruise while being pregnant. Then they made us disembark the ship and took me to a hospital in Cozumel. Meanwhile dh had to go back to our cabin and pack everything up then they had to take him somewhere to get our passports stamped because we were entering the country. After I got to the hospital they did another ultrasound and there was no heartbeat and no baby. :( I don't know how long I had to wait for dh to get there, it felt like hours. They ended up doing a minor procedure to make sure I didn't get any infections and I spent the night in the hospital. While the staff was great, there was one nurse who kept asking me why I was so sad. Ugh and then on the second floor there was no glass in the windows and I could hear the chickens in the yard next door.

The next day we flew home. From Cozumel to Cancun to Miami to Chicago to St. Louis. We finally got home around Midnight.

Worst Vacation Ever!!!

I love my in-laws but they are real red neck vacationers...

So when DH and I were first dating, FIL and MIL invite us to go to a convention in Atlanta. On the way down we stop for the night, pull into a motel parking lot and...

MIL/FIL take their jackets off, sling them over themselves like blankets, tilt their seats back and get ready to go to sleep for the night :confused3.

I told DH that either he got us a (cheap) motel room or he could take me to the nearest greyhound bus location, because I was NOT sleeping in an economy car overnight with my future in-laws!

And, on a more serious note, I was the only family member not on a group tour of Europe when 9/11 happened. Thank God they could get to an internet cafe and let me know that they were all safe and sound.

I still think a bad day on vacation is (usually) better than a good day at work;)!

Worst Vacation Ever!!!

So sorry this happened to you and your dh.

My family drove about nine hours from northern Virginia to North Carolina for our annual beach trip. We checked in, got to our beach house, unloaded the car, and then my dad, sister, and grandmother went to the grocery store to pick up stuff for dinner, while my mom and I went out to the living room porch to read. They came back from the store, except... my grandmother wasn't there. Turned out she HADN'T gone with them.

So I went upstairs looking for her, and found her lying on her back on the upstairs porch, outside her bedroom. It turned out that she had gone out there and started to pull a (not very heavy) chair closer to the railing, and somehow her hip had just snapped. Less than an hour into the vacation. It took FOREVER for the paramedics to get her down two levels to the ground, and then she spent the next few days in the hospital before travelling by ambulance to another hospital back home. And my relatives had to cancel the trip to Russia they were planning to take with her later in the summer. It was awful.

That being said, some of the stories in this thread have certainly made me reflect that it could have been a lot worse. (I also got hit by a car as a kid during another beach vacation, and was at the hospital on a body board for hours because they weren't sure if I had a neck injury. But it turned out I was just banged up.)
