Biggest Loser Alumni Thread! ALL participants (past and present) welcome!

I really enjoy the holidays but must admit I am ready to get back on some sort of schedule. Tomorrow will start back with some norm at least until Thursday then the next week we will be back into full norm mode.

We've kept up with our walking over Christmas, as of yesterday I hadn't lost anything but hadn't gained either. I haven't been eating my breakfast like I need to and a few days didn't get my water in so back to re-focusing on those areas.

Looking forward to sitting down this afternoon and watching the Panther's play.

Have a great day everyone!!

The Panthers gave us a scare, but did better than the 'Heels and pulled it out in the end!

I really need to get back on track. I have been overindulging, but with some degree of restraint as compared to previous years.

I have been working on my health, work and relationship goals for the upcoming year... This year proves to be more challenging than most.

You are right about the Panther game, it was a nail biter at the end. Hated that the Tarheels lost, didn't get to watch that one though.

Have done better today getting my water in not feeling as bloated (TOM has been around).

Let's have a great week everyone!!

Good Monday Morning.

Who has to go to work this morning? I can't believe that I don't have to go back to work till next Monday. It is such a nice long break. UNfortunately I feel like I am getting a cold. Better this week than when I go back. After being out for 2 weeks in Oct. I don't want to take any time off unless I really have to.

I got up thismorning and did 40 minutes of yoga. It felt good to be moving.

Question of the Day
Do you like New Years Eve/Day?

I will be the first to admit that I don't like New Years. It is the one day of the year where I feel older. I don't even feel this way on my birthday. Maybe it is because everyone feels that it should be a joyful event but I am really not a party person. I don't mind being around a few close friends or family but big parties really bother me. I usually end up around just one or two people when I go to a large party. I am also not a drinker and watching people just downing frink after drink to get drunk bothers me.

The last couple of years we have been going to a friend's house but her parties have gotten larger and larger with more and more people I don't know. We may not be going this year and if we do we will not stay till midnight. I have been going to bed pretty early these days.

Do something for yourself today. HAve a great day.

Question of the Day
Do you like New Years Eve/Day?

I actually love New Years! It is exciting to me, like a fresh beginning. I love the year end reviews and reminiscing and the excitement of looking forward to the year and seeing what will happen, and what kind of positive changes I can make in my life.

My dad has a tradition that every year when the clock strikes 12 he opens up the door to "let the new year in" I love that! Unfortunately this year, I am on call, so I may not have that opportunity if I am at work. I might just have to excuse myself from the operating room and go take care of that tradition... "Um, excuse me doctor, but I need to go open to hospital door to let the new year in...":rotfl:

AND this year, not sure yet, depending on how cold it will be, but DS and I are tentatively making plans to join the polar bear club. I'll keep you posted. So far it is supposed to be in the '20's. A little chilly....

Who has to go to work this morning?

That would be me! I am typing from work! Ugh, but we fly out tomorrow, so just one more day!

Question of the Day
Do you like New Years Eve/Day?

The holiday its self I can take or leave, but it always means a long weekend without family obligations, so we always fly up to NY and spend the time with our best friends who live near Albany. this year we get nearly 5 whole days!

Hey guys.

Was working today and as I said last week, am travelling between two provinces.

Finally got my race report done, here it is:

SPACECOAST MARATHON 2008

A GOAL NOT REACHED AND STILL SEARCHING...

This year Bonnie (my sister in law) and I participated in the Spacecoast Marathon in Melbourne, Florida on November 30th.

It had been advertised as a Joints in Motion Event, but, unfortunately, did not sell and Bonnie and I ended up the only participants from Nova Scotia - or from any Joints in Motion Team for that matter. Except for a few purple Team in Training Shirts - we appeared to be the only charity participants, and the only ones from the Arthritis Society.

This is too bad - not only is this an excellent, well run race, but it affords an opportunity to visit Disney World at a time when it is in full swing with Christmas decorations, parades, lights and shows. That is why we wanted to do it.

We flew down on November 28th and were amazed at how smoothly the travel arrangements went (except that I forgot to pack my IPOD and had to get my assistant to drop it off to my mother in law to bring down - I have a great assistant, she also drove us to the airport - and got the day off). There were six of us taking the trip altogether, but we were not able to get on the same flights - my husband flew alone, and Bonnie and I travelled together, on the Friday. My in laws and niece did not get into Orlando until near midnight the next day.

We stayed at the Radisson at Port Canaveral, which was the official hotel for the race. I would recommend that anyone doing this event stay there. The packet pickup and pasta dinner are there. Dick Beardsley was supposed to have been there, but injury kept him away.

The shuttle goes right from the hotel to the race site and starts at 4 a.m. for a 6:00 a. m.

We got the 4:30 a.m. shuttle and had plenty of time.

The race is growing and was picked up by the Running Zone a few years ago. The race directors, Don and Denise Piercey, are husband and wife.

THE EVENT

The pasta dinner is included in the race registration as is a hot breakfast after the event.

The race starts at Cocoa Village and goes down the Indian River Drive. The bus drops you off at a little square (called Riverfront Park) that has plenty of benches and ledges - and porto potties. I normally avoid these as they are so nasty, but was in there twice that Sunday and they were the cleanest I’d seen.

The bag drop off, finish line and food tents are in that park. In the darkness, the Christmas lights were pretty and there was Christmas music playing.

The start line is just a short walk around the corner and up the street. I get there and smell a wood stove burning - great! Nothing chokes me up like smoke, but it soon passed and I was fine.

For the first time, the race has incorporated a corral system - from elite to the slowest (like me - who was in corral six). I actually have my own corral - because I always place myself at the very end of the line.

The nice part about this race is that I did not need to worry about getting in anyone’s way.

The course is an out and back loop for the half - all along Indian River Road. I believe that it used to be a double loop for the full, but now the full marathoners go past the square where the finish line is and go down for another out and back loop back to the finish line - so the full marathon course is sort of like a paper clip. On the other side is a beautiful residential area – with big houses and yards, nicely decorated for Christmas. The neighbourhood also seems to be quite supportive of the race – most folks stay home that morning, there was little vehicular traffic, although the road remained open. I think that this must be a popular place to watch shuttle launches and landings – although the shuttle was routed elsewhere this weekend due to the weather – we were under a tornado watch that Sunday afternoon, which was quite weird for me – tornados are not really heard of in my area.

So everyone ahead of me would be coming back down the other side. I saw many people and, once again, they were just wonderful. I got so many compliments, words of encouragement, hugs and high fives that I turned down the IPOD just to hear them all. I could not believe it.

MY RACE

As most of you know, I did not go there with the intention of completing the half at this point. I knew that this was not an achievable goal at this point (though with a seven hour time limit on the half and the full, this is a very walker friendly race), and worked out a planned drop out at the seven mile mark with one of the race directors, right at the pasta dinner.

This is such a beautiful and walker friendly course! I took to laughing at one of the water stops (the lady was dressed like Princess Leia) who told me that I was now done the “hilly part” of the course. Goodness, these folks don’t know what hills are, the finish line at the Halifax race is uphill.

There was a cop following me and he was lovely – very complimentary of my effort and encouraging – telling me that I had plenty of time and to keep going.

One really inspiring moment was when the leader of the half marathon was coming back and passing me – the first and the dead last right on opposite sides of the road – to me kind of surreal.

There are lots of water stops on this course – every mile on one side of the road or the other. I eat a gel in the porto potty (a new kind of dining room), I am listening to Christmas music and trucking along.

I did the first 5 k in the best time I had all year – and then the wheels came off.

I had been feeling some friction under my left heel but ignored it. By the third mile, I could ignore it no longer.

I sit down, pull off the sock and discover, to my horror, that the moleskin that had worked so well for me in my PEI 10k (I tend to get a bit of chafing under my left arch – no blister or big deal, just a bit of chafing) had slipped under my heel, leaving a very nasty blister.

I stop a bike cop – but nobody has a blister bandaid. We put a couple of regular bandaids on it, but when I stand up, it hurts like heck.

They offer to drive me back – no way, I came to do 7 miles.

In the end, however, I had to pull at five – I called my husband to come get me and he did, but I was very disappointed - I really wanted to beat my record in PEI, but it was not happening that day. Every step was becoming excruciating, and there was no first aid stand until the six mile mark, I just could not make it that long.

What really made me mad was the fact that I know I could have done this – my pace was good (remember that for me that is a relative term), my lungs were great, and the course was flat and gorgeous. The people were encouraging – many runners telling me that I was inspiring them. There were some costumes – Darth Vadar high fived me. I was really sorry to let them down. But I had a five day trip with the family to follow and did not want to have to stay in bed instead of enjoying the Disney (and Universal) parks at Christmas.

It was, I figured, just a race, but man I would have loved to complete it.

THE FINISH LINE

I had been told by the Coordinator of the Arthritis Society (who had spoken to the race director ahead of time) to go to the finish line and ask for the director. They were going to give me the race towel (they give out those instead of mylar blankets – they are big, red white and blue and very cool). A very nice lady (whom I believe was one of the astronauts – they have those at the finish line too) got the race director Denise, who said I was to have a medal also – as long as I did not cross the finish line (of course I didn’t – I would never do that).

The medals are gorgeous, but I would not let them put it on me though they were about to – I just reached out and took it in my hand. I would not let them photograph me in it nor would I wear it, I just brought it home, put it with some of the other medals that were gifted to me, that I cherish but were not earned.

They had a lovely breakfast at the finish line – eggs, pancakes, fruit, sweets, bagels, sausage – lots of things. It was free to the runners (as was the pasta dinner the night before) and available to family and friends also for just five bucks cash.

My family were there waiting for me, as usual – my wonderful inlaws, my sister in law, Bonnie, who, of course finished this race. She did not PR however – the heat and humidity got to her and slowed her time. Funny thing is the heat was not a factor for me at all – there was a beautiful breeze of f the Indian River that felt like the breath of God though the Floridians were complaining that it was “cold”. Man, I came home to minus 17 celcius – cold?

OVERALL VIEW

This is one of the oldest marathons in Florida if not the oldest. It has grown over the years but still very small by Disney standards. I am sorry that it did not sell well in our area and Bonnie and I were the only ones to do it. It is a terrific, walker friendly, well supported race with a beautiful, flat course that I wish I could have completed.

The astronaut lady said “see you next year”. I doubt that she will, due to the distance, but I would love to finish it one year. The Cocoa Beach area is spectacular with an incredible sunset, which my husband nicely photographed.

In addition to the beautiful scenery, this marathon gave us an opportunity to have a Christmas visit at Disney – which was beyond amazing.

Sadly, the blister was nasty. When I got back to the hotel, it had swelled out and turned into a huge blood blister that covered nearly the whole circumference of my left heel. It was very painful for days – felt like I was walking on a beer cap all week. I needed to use an ECV around the parks, which was humiliating and I was on a pity party for a while, but got over it and appreciated the ability the scooter gave me to take in and fully enjoy all the beautiful displays, parades and shows, which I would never have been able to do if I had to walk.

NEXT UP

A 10k race right here in Halifax and a half is planned for the fall. We are thinking maybe Toronto, as there is a 10th anniversary gathering for Joints in Motion there in September.

And then there is Disney 2010. So many of you are looking to me to finally get my Donald and so am I. But I still question my ability to do that, given the pace, even with a year to prepare. We will have to see.

I start a pace training plan right after the holidays (that a good friend devised for me long before I was ready to follow it – but I am now). I have been tracking every point over the holidays and although I will probably gain at weigh in tomorrow (some days the points were atrocious – like Christmas), I was never out of control.

DH gave me some personal training sessions for Christmas at the gym to help plan, although my favourite trainer may be unavailable for a little bit. What is so cool is that he had them print off twenty 30 minute gift certificates and wrote notes on each one – like “You can Do it”, “You don’t have to be perfect. Effort and improvement are important”, “Keep tryin”, “Go get ‘em”, “Work hard & have faith”, and “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Wayne Gretzky”.

Some of the notes are more personal like “I appreciate you” and “You go girl”. Others are more direct – like “Get off your butt!”

Like he also said “Believe” and “You’re worth it”.

Did I pick a great guy or what?

One of his notes also said: “We all reach the finish line sooner or later. It’s what you’ve become when you arrive that matters (his own quote)” and “It is never too late to become what you might have become – George Eliot”.

One said “You’re not a failure unless you fail to try” – and that is one thing I can promise - I will never stop trying.

But when it comes to Disney, I have to adopt Yoda’s quote (also on one of the certificates” – “Do or do not. There is no try”. I cannot go back there again unless I am reasonably sure I can “do”.

Happy New Year everyone!

Will try to write more tommorow.

Christmas was great - really enjoyed being with my sister.

New Years is like a new beginning for me, I do like it. We are spending it with Norm's family - and I adore these people, so I am looking forward to it.

Have a "magical losing day"

Linda

Linda, I just read your race report and I am sitting here in tears! You are so inspiring, I can just imagine darth vader "high-fiving" you! The support from everyone is so awesome. You really inspire me. I am going to look into a local 5k, and work my way up to do a 1/2 marathon. It has been a dream to do it, and you really inspire me.

I am so proud of you for getting up and doing this. I know you were even worried that you wouldn't be able to do any of it. But you did 5 and you were on your way to more. AWESOME job!!!!!:thumbsup2

Your hubby sounds absolutely fantastic. what a supportive guy! And very creative to come up with those certificates. Great quotes!

And it is great that you are getting the pace plan into place to get ready for your next races. Before you know it, you will WEAR that medal and you will wear it proudly because you will cross that finish line!!!!! I only wish I could be there to cheer you on and see that smile on your face as you step across that finish line. I know it will be the most radiant smile of the day!:goodvibes

Good Tuesday Morning everyone.

Thank you Linda for your inspiring story. I have never done a 5 K but a couple of years ago I rode my bike 20 miles for MS and my dh and sons were surprised that I could accomplish it.

It is very windy here in jersey this morning. They are calling for rain and snow tomorrow and Friday. My sister is supposed to fly out either today or tomorrow to DW and do a cruise. (I know they are supposed to be in Dw for NYE and then leave for a short cruise) I hope she and her family can get out.

Question of the Day

Besides getting healthy are there any other resolutions that you are planning to make this year?

I have 2.
1. Clean my sewing workspace and clothes closet.
2. Spend more time on my handiwork and try to do something every day.

HAve a great day everyone.

Question of the Day

Besides getting healthy are there any other resolutions that you are planning to make this year?

There are many that I would like to do this upcoming year.

1 - Finish my three cross-stitch pieces that I have going.

2 - Finish the crochet jacket that just needs sleeves.

3 - Get caught up on our WDW trip scrapbooks.

4 - Organize my craft room where I can find something.

5 - Not be late in returning library books:).

6 - Continue to cook more meals at home than eating out.

I'll stop there but you get the idea.

Linda - Loved reading your race report, thanks for sharing your experiences!! You are such an inspiration!!

Question of the Day

Besides getting healthy are there any other resolutions that you are planning to make this year?

Most of mine are scrapbook goals as it is my favorite activity.

1) Keep 2009 yearly book up-to-date
2) Finish the Fall and Holidays of 2008, aka complete the 2008 books
3) Finish Holiday 2007 and the few "large events" I have been avoiding scrapping because they are time intense- so finish 2007
4) Finish Holiday 2006 (do you see a pattern? I always seem to get sidetracked in December and can never finish a book!)
5) Get some home made cards stockpiled-yeah, never gonna happen!
6) Take a class to learn a new scrapping technique (always plan to, never actually do)

Some other more personal goals,

1) Start dealing in cash. You put things on plastic and forget you did and come December your balance has gone up by $3,000!
1a) Paying off that $3,000 would also be nice, but with the current economy, I don't know how feasible that will be.
2) Finally hunker down and get to my goal weight. That is about 30lbs away!
3) Do chores daily-ideally if dishes are put in the dishwasher every night and other things are put away daily, I wouldn't have to spend Sunday cleaning and I could get my scrapping goals accomplished!
4) Run a 5k in 20 minutes. There is really no reason why I can't accomplish this and it will help with the weight loss.

Did I pick a great guy or what?

Linda, you DID pick a great guy. I don't know your whole story, but I can tell you that I did the half with my three sisters in 2005. (We were the first group here on WISH that did it.) I never thought that I'd be able to do it, but with perseverance we did. DSis and I were almost swept at two different points but we each took a turn at hustling the other through. Memories that will never be forgotten! Maybe we can do it together!

Question of the Day
Besides getting healthy are there any other resolutions that you are planning to make this year?

I have a couple.

1. Be strong as my fourth child heads off to university....so far away. After "helping" three others, I'm surprised at the feelings that this one has me with. (and she's not the last, just one of the neatest kids around....I'll miss her terribly!)

2. Get my LOC down by another 10 000. (Pleeeeaase, don't let any of the older kids decide they want to get married!)

3. Enjoy some Mom and Dad time. It's been 25 years, after all.

4. Fill at least ½ garbage bag full of junk and get it OUT of my house....once a week! (That would be 26 bags full! :scared1: )

5. I'd love to start scrapbooking, but I think that that might cancel out #2 :rotfl:

Debbie, I know what you mean about your 4th child leaving for college. Ds2 left in Sept and we are very close and I miss him a lot. I know that he is enjoying the entire experience. YOu can hear it in his voice when you sit down and talk to him about what he is doing.

I like the idea of the 1/2 bag of garbage out a week. It would be nice to get this house clean and have some room to do my crafts.

It is nice to have some mom and dad time. Dh and I have been married for 30 years. IN Aug we went to the Fl Keys with the 2 boys and had some fun. It is nice to cook for only 2 again. We get to have some things that the boys don't like. Ds1 is still home and will probably be home more after his girlfriend leaves for Spain Jan 10th. A lot of times he is not home for dinner because he is having dinner with her at college.

Question of the Day

Besides getting healthy are there any other resolutions that you are planning to make this year?

I have several!

1. Increase my flexibility and arm strength for push up position ~ TaeKwonDo related

2. Add me to the list of scrapbookers to catch up

3. Put all the rest of the photos in order and put them in albums

4. Get the kids scrapbook albums done

5. Decrease our debt

6. Declutter our house (1 section every month, so it isn't overwhelming, but in 1 year it is done)

7. Sell some stuff on ebay (from the decluttered pile)

8. Play more board games with the kids:goodvibes

Good Wednesday Morning Well it is cold and they are saying rain and snow for today here in jersey.

Ds1 is having a group of friends over tonight for NYE. He has a really nice group of friends so we don't mind. They are all over 21 except 1 but most are not drinkers so there won't be any alcohol. Ds2 is headed to a party at a college friend. It is about 45 minutes from here and I don't know if he is going to drive out by himself or we will drive him. His little car is pretty old and if it is slippery I don't trust his car. He will be there until tomorrow morning. The mom is taking car keys and is not allowing any alcohol so I am pretty happy about this. Dh and I are just staying in and staying out of ds1's way. I have been fighting a cold all week so an early night is a good thing for me.

Yesterday dh went out and got some shelves for the basement. He then proceeded to put things from my sewing table on the shelves. I may not know where anything is but I have a sewing table back. Now I can go through the boxes (he put everything in boxes) one at a time. It looks great down there.

Question of the Day

Is there anything special you have to eat on New Year's Day?

I don't have anything special but I plan to make some pulled pork. Ds2 has been asking for it since he got back from college.

Have a safe and healthy day. Be careful out there today and tonight.

I am just popping in for a few minutes guys.

We are leaving for Bridgewater to spend time with my husband's family over New Years.

We also got some sad news - my husband's father passed away last night. It is his biological father - not the one I have referred to in my posts (that is his stepfather).

Norm's parents divorced when he was very young and his father was not much of a factor in his life, but it is still strange. We will support his stepmother as much as we can - she is a sweet lady. But it is hard when this happens over the holidays.

New Years Resolutions

a) Read more - law books do not count

b ) Try to be less hyper - I am really trying to relax and be more calm

c) Cook more - eat less out of a box

d) Continue the efforts at self improvement that I began in 2008.

This group is a big part of the latter - thank you all so much for your very kind words.

Supporting each other is what we do here, and it is a very important thing.

Happy New Year to you all.

Probably will be off line for a couple of days - so "e ya" next year.

Linda

:tinker: :donald: :mickeyjum

Linda So sorry to hear of your loss. :grouphug:

Linda-Sorry to hear about the loss of your husband's father. Have safe travels.

Question of the Day

Is there anything special you have to eat on New Year's Day?

We don't have any traditions for New Year's Day...may have some stew that is in the freezer.

Have a safe and wonderful New Year's Eve everyone!!

Question of the Day

Is there anything special you have to eat on New Year's Day?

We normally have a ham on NY day. We are about to sit down to a turkey dinner at my mom's house before we head to the strip to see Robie Keneval jump at the Mirage and then watch the fireworks.

Question of the Day

Besides getting healthy are there any other resolutions that you are planning to make this year?

Probably not - this is going to be my main focus this year.

If anything it would be to destress my life and enjoy life more.
