Big tarp on Main Street - Is it still there?

As has been mentioned a few times, it's not going to ruin the trip. However my sister and I are coming from Australia so cancellation is impossible and it will be quite sometime before we go back so it's very disappointing.

That's why I cringe whenever I see this stuff. For me, I know I can go anytime and it'll be done sooner or later. For you, traveling from the other side of the planet, it's a rare experience and you really want it to be everything it's supposed to be. Who in the world wants a big tarp in their memories and photos?

The number of down attractions doesn't seem so outlandish to me, but its gotten to the point where I don't remember what Magic Kingdom looks like without tarps.

Well- I've been following this thread for days now, and finally I have to say my 2 cents worth... (for those of you tired of reading this thread, you can just ignore my post, and I can't say I'd blame you!)

Our family is leaving for Disneyworld in 17 days. :cool1: I have been saving for almost 9 years for this trip- and waiting for the time all 4 of my kids were old enough to enjoy it. (I have 2 sets of twins ages 6 and 9) The time has finally come. We will be at Fort Wilderness for 11 nights, have all our dining reservations made, and I am BEYOND excited! A year ago when I realized this would be the year of our trip, I knew February meant a chance of things being shut down, because I did my research. I also knew the weather could be cold, but we are from MN, so we can stand a little cold. I was optimistic the crowds would not be too bad. We have spent almost $10,000 total on this trip. To our family that is a HUGE amount of money. Hard to justify, but then again, our family has NEVER been on a vacation longer than 1 overnight, and never even left MN. And we probably will only be able to do one more vacation this special while our kids are still at home... Sooooooo if anyone has a right to be upset about all the shutdowns and tarps and renovations, I guess we'd have that right... But you know what? I AM NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's right- I'm NOT!! Not the least little bit! Yeah- we would have liked Fantasmic. Our kids would LOVE the Big Thunder Mountain coaster and we'd all love Kali Rapids. I can only imagine the electrical parade! This will be the only pictures of Main Street or the Castle, or anything else there we probably ever get. But so what!! We are going to have the time of our lives!!!

We are excited about the fireworks and dessert party, the illuminations cruise, going to Sea World, the chance to eat at all these incredible restaurants completely FREE ( I mean, come ON- we get to eat in a CASTLE!!!) driving a golf cart around for 11 days! seeing real wild animals on the safari ride, the wonderful rides we will get to go on- the list just goes on and on... My only disappointment over the whole thing is that once the time comes, that means it also will have to end... But we will still have our memories! And our photopass pictures!

I guess what I'm trying to say is this is a once in a lifetime trip for us. It's not that I'm going with the idea that I have to make the best of it. It truly IS the best! It's a dream come true! I am so excited about what IS there, that I don't have the time to be disappointed in whats NOT. And so many of the people on here posting about their disappointment seem like regular Disneyworld visitors. I can't imagine having the money to go there once a YEAR, let alone 3-4 times like some people say they do. I guess if you go that often, why don't you just try to go when they aren't doing all these things? I understand everyone has their own feelings on all the work being done- I'm not saying any of those are wrong. Feelings are just that- feelings! Noones are the same.

I just feel like I have to let SOMEONE (I don't even know who!) know that there is at least one first time (probably only time unless I get rich!) family coming in February who has not felt disappointed in the least about all the work. Crazy as it sounds, I'm kind of looking forward to seeing these famous tarps, and what a place does to make them magical... :goodvibes:goodvibes

To add another to the pile... Josh at EasyWDW is reporting that the afternoon parade will be following a shortened route due to repaving projects in Frontierland. It will run up Main Street to the hub, turn around, and come back the same route. I don't even want to think about what getting a spot for that parade is going to be like, with the bakery tarp blocking a huge chunk of real estate, the ice cream carts in front of the closed Plaza taking up a little more, the tarps over the chapeau a little more, and now the parade route half its' usual length so everyone has to pack into the construction zone!

I'm trying to be positive about this but it seems like every day I'm reading about one more thing that will be less than magical while we're there.

CM's are handing out maps of the temporary parade route.

:thumbsup2 exactly. we won't be back for a long time and while obviously a few things cannot be helped, it seems everyday something ELSE is added to the list....

well at least peter pan is still OPEN . I hope it still is in 20 days. who knows. Like previous posters, I can't believe so many things are not open or 'normal' at one time. I would be curious to know if there was ever any previous time with so much closed, parads dark, tarps, etc at one time.

Agreed... I saw an earlier post and I freaked :scared1:...

Serenity,

Thanks for posting this...I've been getting a little disillusioned by the whole tarp thing. I'm bringing my mom and it's her first trip in almost 20 years and I was bummed that the MK wouldn't be as pretty as usual. But you helped to put everything into perspective. Count the blessings, not the tarps!

;) Gina

Looks pretty ugly :rotfl:. I'm going down in a few weeks with DH. I think we'll be spending a lot of time at Epcot :goodvibes.

Yes, I think we will be in EPCOT more than expected during this trip as well. That's not a bad thing, though! :thumbsup2

I can't believe everything that's tarped off. I'm starting to wonder if there is anything that's not?!? While I know we will still have fun... I do have to say we too are very disappointed as it just won't be the same for my Parents. It's their first and only time going and we just wanted it to be magical, but with all the tarps it's taking some of that magic away.

I think I was more annoyed by the work in progress in 2005. Perhaps it's only because I expected it this time. More likely it's that clearly something 'magical' is happening this time with the expansion of Fantasyland. A new castle doesn't show up on the horizon very often... :)

EPCOT is easy to like..Limoncello, Grand Marnier Slushies, Jäger (a nice digestive:thumbsup2) I really enjoy Soarin' too.;)

While I don't like all the tarps etc., it does make sense that they'd do this during a low crowd level time. I leave on Wed. And will still have a great time. I am more upset about TMR being closed!! That is one of our favorites!

I guess progress can't be made without the tarps etc......

Thanks for the update on the parade...as I was going over our plans one more time I saw that I had originally scheduled the afternoon parade ... but I think we'll skip it this time. No need to fight the crowds on Main Street nor wait that long for a good spot.

Those updated pictures just confirmed that we'll spend the majority of our time at the other parks!

I think they are just trying to get as much fixed up and refreshed as they can so that when the New Fantasyland opens the rest of the park will look good as well. I mean the place is 40 years old. It needs some fixing up.
