Big tarp on Main Street - Is it still there?

sorry but i just don't see where you answer why the tarp is up and for how long, all i see are photos from your time at the park.

OK...

1. It's the first three pictures you should be looking at.

The first on is the "big Ugly Brown Box".
The second and third show the transformation of the BUBB to the scrim that PRESENTLY covers the BUBB.

2. These are not my Pictures but are part of the blog that is this site.

I am trying to show everyone what it looks like now compared to what it looked like as they were putting it up. A sort of before and after shot.

In other words, it makes this entire thread almost completely useless. There is no big ugly brown box anymore.

Whew! I need to take a nap. Please can we move on now???

So, I should just cancel my current trip, that I booked a year ago, and lose a hefty deposit? Hmmm..

Disney has performed maintenance for many years, without the number of tarps, closures, etc. How much of MK is currently operating? Personally, I think, it's a big mess. I stated earlier, it's a only part of a larger picture. Some of us, are aware of the changes in management and the current business model. It really makes me appreciate Walt and those who are responsible for giving us the Magic. This regime can't even maintain it, much less create it.

The Fantasyland expansion, hopefully will be a good thing. Avatarland...not so much. This is Disney's response to Harry Potter? I would think, the POC series would have been a better choice. It's been wildly popular, and this could have been a nice balance to the Princesses. Not that my sons minded, but this seems to be the arguement for Cindy losing her Carousel, etc.:rotfl: IMO BTW, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter IS AMAZING!!

Place changed so is business model, it is business after all. Did Walt or his

brother had to deal with 4 parks, more then 20 hotels, offsite hotels, and so on?

How many people were even visiting parks? Did they have stocks and do not

forget without stocks we would probably still have only 2 parks and few hotels?

Did Disney brothers had to deal with 40 yo buildings and monorail?

So what, you expected that they still run it like nothing changed?

I do not know for how long you've been going, I go for almost 12 years and

even so I see some issues, I can tell you that magic is just the same it was the

first time I saw the castle. You may or may not like new projects, only time will

show if they will be hits but I am excited about new things even if I know FL

is not actually for me or my family.

Tarps were there before and tarps will be there after, MK is huge and there is a

lot of it uncovered. However, if I were so upset with Disney that I could

see only bad and not noticing or refusing to see good changes, good things, I

would cancel trip even if I had to loose my deposit.

I'm gettin a little suspicious that goofyernmost is the person in charge who put the lunch sack in place to start with, what with all this defensive stuff.;)

As stated in previous posts, we've visited regularly for 30+ years. I am not willing to lose a $2k deposit and disappoint my DGDs, by canceling their cruise, at the last minute. That's a bit stupid. IMO Hopefully, the new ship won't be worn and in shambles...just yet.;) If so, I will make a full report.:rotfl:

I have to agree completely with Goofyernmost. Everyone (OK, a lot of people) had their knickers in a twist about the big box on Main Street. Eleven pages later we see that it was all a tempest in a teapot, and the new scrim is in place. Necessary maintenance and/or upgrades are being done. Photos of Main Street can again be taken. You can all take a deep breath. And those of you who say its all going to H... in a handbasket must now come up with some other compelling example. Moving on.....

My issue is not with maintenance per say. I get it is off season, but there are enough parks you would think they could rotate work schedules. Why can't they split the projects more between different park so you don't end up with more than 1 tarped building per street at least,(expansion excluded of course). I have been going to Disneyworld for over 25 years. They have definitely increased the refurb areas done at one time.
I don't think it is fare to judge people because they comment when they see a trend that is growing. Off season guests pay the same ticket price as everyone else. The crowds may be down but the parks close earlier so I consider that a wash. Off season guests should be able to have expectations too,IMO.:hippie:

I guess now's not the time to tell you Peter Pan is having work done, it starts Monday.

So what is your solution to the problem of necessary maintenance/refurbs? Spread it out throughout the year so that attractions are out of service during peak crowd times when wait times are already sky high? Or perhaps you'd rather they just defer maintenance so that fewer refurbs are done each year. After a couple of years of this I'm sure the parks would look absolutely lovely and there would be no problems whatsoever with rides going down with increasing frequency. I think you have to accept the fact that, especially at MK (which is the oldest park), maintenance requirements are increasing in direct proportion to the aging of the original infrastructure. My brand new house doesn't need nearly as much maintenance as our old 50year old one did. And if they must limit the number of tarps that are up at any one time, when would they also have time to put up the walls for new additions??

Yes, off season guests pay the same ticket price as everyone else. And off season guests know (or should know) that this is when the major refurbs are carried out. If they don't like this then they are perfectly free to 1)suck it up and go anyway. b)go any way and complain about it the whole time. III)Pick different dates to avoid the closures. iv)don't go at all.

Lots of tarps in Frontierland as well. Also at the entrance area near the train. There some up around that hat store area as well. It's more than the one that is at the bakery. I am planing to go to MK either Fri night or Sat since I have some fast passes that expire Sat. (due to SM breaking down) maybe I'll take some pics.

Thanks for the head's up. Guess we'll just expect a LOT of tarps and construction all over MK.

I'd love to see pics if you take them!:thumbsup2

This time of year for sure. Maybe more now because there has been such a push to get everything pristine for the opening of the new Fantasyland, which, in-spite of posting to the contrary, IS A BIG DEAL! It has been a very long time since Disney has spent this much money in MK.

Oooh, so are you promising that everything will be "pristine" in 2013??!!??

:rotfl::rotfl2:Just kidding!!:goodvibes I couldn't resist!!;)

I do understand the push right now is for the new expected baby ... and we can't wait to meet her ... but some of us January folks just feel like the first born kid who doesn't get any of the attention. Yeah, I know, Wah Wah! Tough life...you're at Disney stop complaining, etc :lmao:

And on that note -- one more week for me!!:cheer2::woohoo:

Wow, your really taking this personal. You have your feeling/opinions, others have theirs. If you read my post carefully, I said, and this is just throwing out an idea, that they could try not to concentrate so many projects on one street or area at the same time. If there is so much that needs to be done, maybe this is possible. Never did I suggest they do rehabs during peak times. I don't know what is possible, and unless your somehow involved in the process, neither do you. This is a discussion forum where people should be able to voice their feeling without being told to suck it up or stay home.

hey those weren't the only options, so don't be so dramatic. And I am certainly not taking anything personally. What in my previous post could be construed in that manner? I was simply pointing out why your suggestion was impractical. Am I incorrect in thinking that in a public forum people are free to voice opinions that differ or run counter to yours?

This seems like such a lame issue to get so mean about. I still say its OK to complain about it and its OK if it doesn't bother you.

While I get your point, really I do, I don't think it really applies here. Most of us who booked for January did so with some understanding that offseason means more refurbs. However, every single one of my 6 trips to WDW has been in a value season, including one previous January trip, and it has NEVER happened that there were multiple headliners down at the same time, or multiple tarped-off buildings on Main Street, or multiple evening shows dark simultaneously. This year has all of the above, plus the ongoing Fantasyland construction and now the construction on Peter Pan's new queue as well, and the vast majority of it was announced well after the point where cancellation or rescheduling ceased to be a practical/cost effective option.

So yeah, I'm going to vent about it a bit. It won't ruin our trip but it is very frustrating to go when there are so many construction projects going on simultaneously, and I do wish Disney had split things up a little better. There are other value & regular seasons, you know... It doesn't ALL have to be done in the 6 weeks between the Christmas/New Year and Presidents Day peaks!
