Best time to rent a car?

What has been your experience as to the best time to rent a car? We always travel over Christmas and New Years. In the past I used to book hotel, flights and car by February the latest. I always check if anything better comes along. Last year I got a much better price in September for the car therefore being three months before travel. A friend of mine gets great rates one month before. What has been your experience?

We travel during March break. In the past, rates would go down at one month out - but this year, the best rate I had was six months out. I checked constantly, and the prices just continued to climb. I suggest checking and when you see a good rate you would be willing to pay, book it --then keep checking back every month. You don't need a credit card or payment to hold the reservation. I like going through Costco.

When we travelled last August, I was beginning to get a bit nervous as I checked rental prices a couple of months out. I just kept watching, daily, and booking and cancelling as rates went down. My best rate was actually the day that we left (I don't think that's the norm, though) We had a late flight, and I was able to book early in the morning for less than I originally had. I believe we paid about $300 for a midsize through Alamo. Bonus..when we got to the airport, there were a few cars in the aisle, and 5 minivans!! So we ended up with a minivan (with entertainment system!!) for about $300 for 2 weeks.
