BedBugs-be carefull!

Well aware of what we are talking about.. if you would read my posts, i AM talking about bedbugs, I was QUOTING somone else............ You really need to read it all before you comment on what i was talking about... :sad2:

uh, I did read. but read it wrong. I went back and re-read. There was no anger in my post just clairification. Sorry for the mix-up.

Foreign travelers have caused the resurgence.

Thats not entirely true. While many of them do tend to hitch rides from foreigners the resurgence of bed bugs are due to the banning of the chemical DDT in the late 70's. This was the only chemical that would effectively eliminate bedbugs and is why we have not had a problem with them until recently. When environmentalists groups got DDT banned in the late 70's bed bugs started to slowly re-emerge to the point of being a big problem a couple of years ago. Unfortunately this problem will only continue to get worse unless DDT is used again or another Chemical is found that will kill the little buggers.

A friend of mine stayed in a local hotel during an icestorm last year that had knocked out the power at her home. She started noticing bite marks on her 3yo daughter a short time (couple of weeks?) later. Come to find out it was bed bugs from the hotel. She ended up spending somewhere close to $8,000 to rid her house and her Mother's house (her daughter spent the night there, along with her pillow, blanket and stuffed animal, before they knew they were infested). The exterminator she used shared with her that the hotel had an ongoing problem with the bedbugs. What a nightmare!

I consider bed bugs a "free, in-room character greeting". Part of the package plan. I figure they must be from the "It's Tough to Be a Bug" attraction at Animal Kingdom. :3dglasses

We were just talking to a group of people the other night about the deadly outbreaks of Malaria in Africa, killing people by the 10's of thousands because the mosquitoes can't be controlled. (we were watching the American Idol special on Africa where they showed the suffering of malaria victims). Well apparently, all they need to do is lift the ban on DDT, and the mosquito problem disappears. I remember living in New Jersey as a child in the 70's where DDT was sprayed through neighborhoods from the backs of trucks. We actually rode our bicycles through the cloud of fumes. I don't know if DDT contributed to any actual deaths, but I do know that malaria certainly is. I bet bedbugs would be a very simple problem to solve also. :)

bed bugs are returning to suck blood of their host and make merry. They can hide themselves very easily in the day and come out at night to attack their host at night. They can live without food for months together!

Interesting.. I have stayed at Pop 3 times.. The last time was in Nov./Dec. of 2007.. I ended up with these bites that caused the most intense itching ever!! Nothing worked to stop the itching and I was about ready to tear my hair out.. At the time, I thought they were "no-see-um" bites from sitting down by the water every day writing in my journal, but I'm not so sure now.. We have no-see-ums up here in the mountains as well, and I have never, ever had that kind of instense itching..

Guess I'll be a "checker" from now on..

:confused3 This thread is 16 months old..

While everyone should check, don't necessarily get all freaked out. I travel frequently to various vacation destinations which require a hotel stay and cruises (where they can be a problem too) and check every time. I haven't found one yet in over 10 years of checking.

You are lucky not to find one in past 10 years. BUt every one is not as lucky as you. Me for example go bedbug bites when i was away in hotel Penn last year.In fact it happened such that I ended up carrying some to my house. I had to get anti bug spray to kill them. But they keep on reappearing every noew and then.
