Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Hey y'all. Just checking in... LTO!!! Hope everyone is having a losing week! :goodvibes

Kim and Vic--Glad you guys are feeling better!

Chocolate! YUM! It has been calling my name the last few weeks! I've not been able to get on track since WDW! This week will be better though! My goal is to get to the gym for some XT. I did finish up last week strong w/ a 3.6 walk/run in about 50 minutes!

Hope everyone has a good day!
Stacie

When I have that chocolate thing really bad...and diet cocoa can't do it....I reach for a Dove Dark Chocolate! Let it melt in your mouth slowly and just a couple of them will cure that chocolate craving!

Beth: This is my trick for chocolate craving. In the afternoon when I pick the kids up from school, I make myself a treat for the drive...half low sugar hot chocolate and half coffee. It is just enough chocolate kick with the caffeine that I feel like I am cheating. This is also a better choice if you are on the go (i.e. shopping) and get that craving too. Either that, or a Ghiradelli dark chocolate square. Hey, might as well go for the best if you are going to give in...right???:rolleyes1

Hi Lisa,
That sounds like something I would like. Do you use instant coffee?

Good morning Lean Meaners!

I'm officially off of the antibiotics. WooHoo!

I'm scheduled for a 1/2 marathon (Seaside, FL) in three weeks. So, tonight we will get back at it. It's time to kick butt and take names. :thumbsup2

Kim - Hope you get to feeling better.

Everyone - Keep up the great work.

Debra - I'm a daily yogurt eater. Do I need to be worried? I need that bacteria to maintain the beneficial flora in my intestinal tract. Of course, whenever I share my flora with the DW she doesn't see the benefit. :confused3 :lmao: I blame it on the dogs anyways. :rolleyes1

As gross as it may seem, I actually use my left over coffee from morning. I get done work, go run/workout however, come in and pop the coffee, skim milk, half packet of sugarfree cocoa in a cup, in the micro, go change my clothes and voila!! Instant treatie. I am not a big instant coffee fan but it would probably work. Of course, I am not a big rewarmed coffee fan either but we gotta do what we gotta do!!!!

Jeanne, sometimes when I am out and know I will be out for awhile and have my DD13 with me, I go to a Dunkin Donuts or Tim Hortons and buy a medium decaf coffee and a medium hot chocolate with an extra cup. She and I split the two between us and both have a treat. It is more sugar and calories but sometimes I just need a boost!!! :goodvibes

Lisa: It makes me wish I liked coffee!:headache: I have to say though, my little low carb hot chocolate got me through the night with no more eating!:thumbsup2

Eating lunch now......dreamfields lasanga and a big ol' salad. It's yummy!

Beth

Good Afternoon Lean Meaners!

Saturday I did my long walk, yesterday I did weights, and today I'll be back on the TM for an hour. This is the most consistent I've been in months, and it's all due to WWDave's game. :goodvibes

My diet is pretty scary -- I meant to turn it around today, and then I had pad thai for lunch. On the bright side I am very full, and I know we're having chicken for dinner, so I'll have two healthy meals. Oops. Forgot about that donut for breakfast. Make that 1 healthy meal...I'm beginning to see where I'm going wrong. I have to get back to writing everything down. That helps me focus on better choices.

Beth -- I don't do coffee either. I love hot tea, especially vanilla chai. It's full of sugary goodness, so I limit myself to one a week.

Vic -- I have yogurt every day for breakfast. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong! :confused3

Lisa -- I'm all for a little mid-day boost. I make a giant mug of tea (32 oz.) in the morning, and then if I've been drinking like I should, I get another one in the afternoon with fruit and a 100 cal. pack of cookies.:lovestruc

Connie -- Yep, I'm regretting giving up candy for Lent right about now. I could go for one little Dove square...:guilty:

Stacie -- So since I gave up the candy I've been getting my chocolate in 100 cal packs, and Ding Dongs. Only 180 calories if you just eat one, and no trans fats!:rotfl2: Yep, I'm pretending that's healthy.

Kim -- Here's hoping you feel better soon, we miss you're smiling face!:goodvibes

Kate -- If I don't allow myself little treats, I eventually go crazy and eat way too much of something I shouldn't. Having a portioned amount that you savor is a sound strategy!:thumbsup2

Debra -- Ok, you have to share with the yogurt. Are we all being led down a primrose path?pirate:

Bill -- How are you doing? I hope you're feeling fit as a fiddle!

I guess I need a "food" challenge to match the miles/hours challenge. Then I might be able to put it all together!

Everyone have a great, losing (and active) day!
Maria

Oh no!!! Debra, what's in my yogurt? :scared1: I am such a yogurt freak. Should I be worried, or cutting back? The No-Pudge brownies sound yummy, they're a mix right?

First, yes on the No-Pudge. It's a mix. I don't normally make mixes as I prefer baking. The theory was that doing so would prevent me from eating brownies. Yeah, it's all a good, working theory until 9 at night.

:rolleyes1

Okay, maybe I should take down my "appalled" statement, just a bit. (Although that's really how I felt when first reading the ingredients.) It's just that, silly me, I thought most yogurts would contain milk and active yogurt cultures and that's about it, except for whatever flavoring/fruit might be added. I had no idea that so many brands add pectin (thickening agent) and sugars to their yogurts. Now, plain yogurts might only add pectin, but it depends on the brand.

Here's an example of what I mean, using Dannon as a readily accessible brand.

Dannon All Natural Lowfat Yogurt: Cultured grade A reduced fat milk, pectin. Contains active yogurt cultures including L. acidophilus.

Okay, that doesn't sound too bad, even though I didn't expect pectin. Look what happens if you eat the vanilla version of the same brand.

Dannon All Natural Lowfat Vanilla Yogurt: Cultured grade A reduced fat milk, sugar, natural vanilla flavor, pectin. Contains active yogurt cultures including L. acidophilus.

Now I've added not just natural vanilla flavor (which I would have guessed), but additional sugar (which I would not have guessed). I can live with it, but it's irritating.

But look what happens when you move outside the all natural yogurt & look at the ingredients list for Dannon's other products.

Dannon's Activia (Vanilla): CULTURED GRADE A REDUCED FAT MILK, FRUCTOSE SYRUP, SUGAR, CONTAINS LESS THAN 1% OF FRUCTOSE, WHEY PROTEIN CONTENTRATE, CORN STARCH, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, KOSHER GELATIN, NATURAL VANILLA FLAVOR, SODIUM CITRATE, MALIC ACID.

Dannon's Fruit on the Bottom (Mixed Berries): Cultured grade A lowfat milk, strawberries, fructose syrup, sugar, blueberries, high fructose corn syrup, blackberries, contains less than 1% of modified corn starch, raspberries, pectin, kosher gelatin, natural flavor, sodium phosphate, malic acid, elderberry juice concentrate (for color), calcium phosphate. Contains active yogurt cultures including L. acidophilus.

Dannon Fruit Blend Yogurt (Strawberry & Peach): Cultured grade A reduced fat milk, sugar, peaches, high fructose corn syrup, fructose syrup, modified corn starch, whey protein concentrate, contains less than 1% of natural flavor, Kosher gelatin, citric acid, pectin, sodium citrate, annatto extract (for color), potassium sorbate (to maintain freshness), malic acid, tricalcium phosphate, Red 40. Contains active yogurt culture.

Dannon Light & Fit Nonfat Yogurt (Vanilla): NONFAT YOGURT [CULTURED GRADE A NON FAT MILK, MODIFIED CORN STARCH, KOSHER GELATIN, VITAMIN A PALMITATE, VITAMIN D3], WATER, CONTAINS LESS THAN 1% OF MODIFIED CORN STARCH, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, SUCRALOSE, POTASSIUM SORBATE (TO MAINTAIN FRESHNESS), CITRIC ACID, ANNATTO EXTRACT (FOR COLOR), CARAMEL COLOR SODIUM CITRATE

I could go on, but you get the point. These good-for-you yogurts are chock full of things that make the yogurt more palatable, either in appearance or to my sweet taste buds. But they don't make it better for you and, in fact, some of the ingredients are bad for you. One of the bits of advice that Michael Pollan gives, the author whose In Defense of Food got me reading my yogurt label, is "Avoid food products containing ingredients that are a) unfamiliar, b) unpronounceable, c) more than five in number, or that include d) high-fructose corn syrup." And see how many of those products contain high-fructose corn syrup? ::headache:

Oh, and it's not just Dannon, btw. I checked out labels for a variety of yogurts, including organic yogurts. Most of them contain sweeteners and thickeners that aren't necessary; sure, the higher-end, organic products might use can sugar instead of corn syrup, but.... The exceptions I've found so far are (predictably) Greek yogurt and a brand called Seven Stars. Unfortunately, both brands are more expensive than Dannon All Natural Plain yogurt, expecially considering how much of it DH and I eat. (6-7 days a week.) So for right now we're eating Dannon All Natural but are thinking about making our own yogurt.

Wow, sorry about the long post & potential soap-box moment, but I guess I was just surprised. I should know better, of course, but somehow yogurt just escaped my label-reading attention. Realizing just how much sugar is in my yogurt left a bad taste in my mouth--not literally, which is why I loved the fruit-flavored stuff so darn much. Learning what was really in my yogurt reminded me of my reaction when I learned that a lot of really good cheese has animal rennet in it--as a vegetarian I was appalled. (Apparently, that happens to me a lot! :rotfl:)

Is everyone staying warm...

I would imagine trying to stay warm in this FREEZING weather would be burning some calories right?

I love all your tips for chocolate cravings...I guess a double hot fudge chocalate sundae isn't a good idea!?!?!? although my hubby always tells me that ice cream is not an efficient way to cool down in the summer b/c it might provide temporary relief but then your body works to get warm again and in reality you end up expending more energy and end up hotter....SO with that theory - shouldn't eating ice cream burn calories?

Interesting stuff about yogurt.

I'm a Yoplait Light eater. Here's the ingredients for Strawberries and Bananas.

Cultured pasteurized grade A nonfat milk, high fructose corn syrup, strawberries, modified corn starch, banana puree, whey protein concentrate, kosher gelatin, citric acid, natural flavor, tricalcium phosphate, asparatame, potassium sorbate added to maintain freshness, red #40, vitamin a acetate and vitamin D2.

Some of that stuff doesn't sound all that good. :scared1:

Okay, now that I've put in my $.02 about the yogurt, I can get on with the rest of the Lean Meaner thread....

Tracey: I admire your restraint with the little piece of cake, eaten with appreciation. I'm working on moderation & guilt-free living.

Beth: That's 10 miles on the dreadmill, and the word dreadmill suggests just how much willpower you needed to muster up the energy. Congrats! I always have chocolate cravings, and I'm absolutely no good in terms of managing them. I try to go with high-end, darker chocolates or organic chocolates (Scharffen Berger, Green & Black) but that's about it. (I do find if I spend enough money on chocolate I feel too guilty to eat it all in one sitting...does that count for anything?) I admire the low-carb hot chocolate willpower, though.

Lisa: I'll have to try the 1/2 hot chocolate-1/2 coffee. I usually go for the mocha and try to delude myself that the milk makes the drink healthy.

Kim: I hope you're feeling better! Those lingering coughs make it difficult to do anything remotely sweat-inducing.

Connie: Your Dove Chocolate reminded me. I will sometimes put chocolate kisses in the freezer to slow down the melt-in-your-mouth sensation. Of course, it ruins the temper of the chocolate; but it improves my temper.

Vic: I'm glad you're off the meds and well on the mend! I'm sure Seaside will quake in fear when they learn you're coming to conquer! :cool1: And isn't the yogurt stuff kind of freaky? I mean, I know it's still better for me than lots of things I eat--but I just think of all yogurt as being really, I don't know, natural.

Maria: :yay: for workout consistency! And I really think that eating healthily includes being full and satisfied. Like you've been saying, nothing like feeling deprived to undercut everything else. It's the balance and moderation that I think I need to work on the most. I'd level a food challenge at you, but, well...I might need one myself. I can't be the lemming that leads us off the cliff.

Kate: I'm telling the ice cream burns calories to DH; he's the real aficionado in our household. (Ben & Jerry's in our freezer all the time.)

As for me: Well, you read the above post. Apparently I'm enjoying the sugary goodness that is hidden in my yogurt. I managed to work out every day day Friday-today, and feel pretty good about it. I'll be taking a light day tomorrow, though, and my body feels ready for some down time. Today was weigh in for me and I've lost another pound. :goodvibes I'm not pulling down Beth numbers, but I've been pretty steady and it's a pace I can live with.

Yeah, Debra.....down a pound! Good for you!!!:cool1: :cool1: I actually stayed exactly the same from Friday to Monday....:headache: but, I will take it a feel glad it wasn't up!

I love yogurt, but I have to stick to the low carb ones.....I think Dannon Low sugar/low carb. I'll have to read the labels though, probably no better than the ones you listed.:headache: Sort of burns me too.....you are trying to eat healthy and they stick high fructose corn syrup in it! That's the worst thing they could do!

Funny, you had Vic looking at his too!

Kim: I hope that your cough gets better soon. It's doesn't make for a fun time exercising when you're coughing so much!:goodvibes

I hope everyone else is having a productive day!

So, PaDisneyFan (Nancy) and I were talking......the most frustrating thing is when you are being very 'good' eating well, and exercising and still the scale doesn't budge.......UGH! It's hard to maintain your momentum when the scale stays up. What do you do????? :confused3 :confused3

Right now the scale has been pretty friendly to me, but it doesn't always happen that way. It can be difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle when the scale doesn't reward you. I know it shouldn't be all about the numbers, but it can feel like a failure. Nancy has been doing all the right things, and still nothing......I feel her pain.

We are all trying our best, and I guess we just have to hang in there!:thumbsup2

Good morning Lean Meaners!

2.5 miles on the TM last night, and I christened the new shoes. I love having new running shoes. :thumbsup2

The bottom of my left foot, where that stupid blister was, is still tender. Heck I figured by now it would be healed up. Guess I'll put a little Body Glide on it before I run tonight and see how that works.

Debra - WTG with the 1 lb loss.

Beth - Maintaining is better than gaining.

Everyone - Keep up the great work!

:)

Hi all.
Thanks, Debra, for the yogurt info. I went and checked out all of our containers (we have 4 different kinds). They had all kinds of stuff in them. I am such a label checker, but for some reason don't check my yogurt. I did at one time because I read that some of the kid flavors have partially hydrogenated oils in them and removed those from our shopping list. But, even my Weight Watchers had yucky stuff and I love it because it's only 1 point. I'll be looking from now on. Thanks.
My chocolate fix is the Ghirardelli squares--Yum! The coffee and cocoa sounds really good though. And....I know that Bob Greene says that those who consume hot drinks consume something like 15% less calories during the day. So keep up with the hot drinks.
Congrats on pounds lost this week---to all who lost. To those who didn't, don't get discouraged. I've plateaued for 5 weeks now. I try to think my body is saying, "Is she really gonna keep this up?" Eventually the plateau will break--it's just a matter of staying strong(or at least trying to). I just wish it wasn't so hard. And then I stick with the looser pants test.....as long as they're not getting tighter, I'm doing o.k. Stay strong guys.:)
Glad to hear that those who were sick are feeling better.:yay:

It's me again. Not a lean, meaner question, but how do I quote just a sentence or paragraph of someone else's post. I've been copying and pasting and then adding the quotes later. I figured out how to quote the whole post but not just a phrase and still give the original poster credit. So...I figure it's time I confess I'm truly not all that computer savvy. So, to those of you that are, can you give me a little help.:worship:
Thanks.

Thanks.

Copy the sentence/pargraph you want to quote. If you want to use the quick reply window, click the icon (paper and quill pen) at the bottom righthand corner of each post, or you can click the "Post Reply" button.

At the top of the window, looking at the icons starting from left to right, click on the last one on the right (It's yellow and looks like a cartoon bubble). You will now see the words quote in brackets.

Place your cursor between the brackets and paste the sentence/paragraph. Make sure the words "Quote" are bracketed.

To add a name, place the equal sign after the first quote and then add the name. It should look like this

Hi Everyone,

I was looking for some healthy eating motivation so I popped in here. I went back and read the last 5 pages and it was just what I needed. Thanks.

I’ll take a minute to introduce myself for those who haven’t “met” me before. I started following WW last April in an attempt to lose some of my “pregnancy” weight. I managed to lose 27 lbs in the subsequent 7 months in no small part due to the encouragement on the weight loss thread (Thanks, Maria, Minnie, Connie and Wendy among others!!) Since November I’ve gained and lost the same 3 to 5 lbs. I still have a little way to go to reach my goal weight, but in addition to that I want to start eating healthier foods. I’m not a big fan of vegetables, but I know they are good for me. In theory I agree with the “if you can’t pronounce it you shouldn’t be eating it” philosophy, but I have to say I do eat the 100 calorie packs of chips and cookies which are packed with questionable ingredients. I hope that by stating my intentions of healthier eating to this thread I will be more motivated to stick with it. Thanks in advance for your support.

Tracey: Sorry you’ve plateaued, but good for you for not getting discouraged and sticking with it.

Vic: Glad you like the new shoes, good luck with the blister. You would think by now it would be better.

Beth: I agree it can be frustrating not to see the results on the scale. It definitely helps to have another measure to go by. Too bad just knowing you treated your body to healthy food and exercise isn’t enough sometimes. I just bought a scale that measures body fat % and hydration %. I have no idea how accurate it is, but I’m hoping that if I don’t see the weight decrease at least I’ll see a drop in body fat, or if nothing else just see that I am properly hydrating myself.

Debra: Congratulation on losing a pound. Every one counts!

Maria: Hello. Good job on being consistent with your exercise. That should really help. I agree with you that the miles/minutes challenge is great motivation.

Kim: Hope the cough is gone. Good luck with your weight loss goal.

Have a great day everyone.
Cindy

Beth: I just love how you're always so positive! I'm much more of a "Downer Debra," so I really appreciate it when I have people to balance me out. I think you're right, though, that we have to recognize our own efforts & accomplishments, even if those things are always reflected in quantifiable ways (on the scale, with our pace, in lifting weights, etc.). We're all making choices and positive changes that we need to acknowledge.

Vic: Right back on the TM--great news! New-shoe feel is better than new-car smell, IMO. (Although I have to give an edge to new-car smell over even new-shoe smell....) My blisters are mostly healed, but I've noticed a tendency to get that hot-spot feeling at much lower mileage these days. Is this what's happening to you? Runner's World has reviews of socks in this month's issue that I need to read up on.

Tracey: I actually feel kind of guilty about spreading the yogurt news. I mean, there are lots worse things we could eat (and I do). It was just such a surprise to me, you know? I'm trying to keep food choices like yogurt as healthy as possible to balance out those things--like chocolate--that I know are non-negotiable for me over the long haul.

Cindy: I agree with you that a reasonable goal is eating healthier. There's no way that I want to set myself up for failure by following some holy grail of food consumption. You sound very moderate in your choices--I admire that.

As for me: Practically a snow day here--lots of snow, which turned to rain, and is now beginning to ice over. Activities are cancelled all over the city. The good news, if you can call it that, is that I added some snow shoveling to today's totals--45 minutes outside, but only about 30 active minutes. Unlike the friendly, fluffy stuff of last week, this was heavy & mushy. Yechh. New stories are providing hints on the right way to shovel. I'm a bit chilled right now, so tonight sounds like a good time for my homemade black-bean soup (one of the few things I cook that I actually like).

I think this is a really hard time of year NOT to get frustrated. Many of us came off the high that was the Disney marathon weekend. Even if we didn't, there's the lingering New Year's resolutions, illnesses and injuries, and the long winter that seems to get even longer. It's hard to step on the scale or look at one's diet or track one's miles & not see the progress. But we're LEAN MEANERS, and that means that we're tough, we're strong, we're dedicated, and most importantly WE'RE NOT ALONE. I celebrate each of your accomplishments as if they were my own, and struggle with your challenges. I know you can do it--and with you at my back, I know I can, too.
