Becoming Lean, Mean, Endurace Event Machines in 2008

Good early a.m. Lean Meaners. I am up and working at this early hour. Gymnastics meet at noon today. Shoveling out needs to be done too. I love this thread. It is so friendly and helpful!! I am picking up more nutritional pieces over here!!

Dave: Have you been talking to my DH again?? He wants to incite a 30 day challenge BTW. :rolleyes1 Good luck with the surgery tomorrow. Let us know how you are doing as soon as you leave your purple haze. :upsidedow

Tracey: Hope the sleepover went well. I have to work up courage for a few months before that happens here. I would rather throw a birthday party for 20 kids than have a few sleep over!!!!:scared:

Lily: So good to see you getting out and about. Hope you are taking it easy and not going stir crazy yet.

Connie: Holy crap, the calculation has me needing 1950 calories a day!!! :scared1: Jeez, I think I eat around 1400-1500 and that is a lot for me. Maybe I didn't figure it right. I am so not good at math!!! :teacher:

Maria: I hope you get your workout in. I can put mine off during the week until after I get done working but on the weekend it is early morning before my shower or not at all!!!

Shan: Still hang in there. I believe the same about weight training and core exercises are soooo important too. Just don't give up. I was down under 130 yesterday which makes me :goodvibes but today I am back on the 130 mark again. What gets me is Friday I had some indiscretions :rolleyes1 but Saturday I ate really well. Go figure. Hang in with us and hopefully that pound feels really unwanted soon!!!!

Bill, Vic: Hello, are ya out there. We really miss your helpful suggestions!! :lmao:

Have a great day everyone and wish me luck. Noon at a gymnastics meet where they only sell hot dogs (the red snapper kind with all the additives, color and really yummy things) on white rolls and candy makes for a long afternoon. Whoever makes those whoopie pies (chocolate cakes with creme filling) is killing me!!!!!! popcorn::

Thank you Lisa. I will be in a drug induced stuper for a few days do you think anyone would notice?

"I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it".

See y'all in a few days.

Dave

Good morning everyone,

I have been eating a lot the last couple of days. I'm still staying away from the sugar and eating healthy snacks, but have felt the need to have extra helpings of everything. I'm pretty sure it's because when I woke up Friday morning I had another cold. This time it's my chest and sinuses. I'm so defeated at this point. I have not been healthy since Jan 22nd. I've had full time kid duty the last 2 days, so I can't even just go lay down for a while. I'm just looking to comfort myself. I did hop on the scale this morning and it's where it was at my last WI so I haven't done too much damage, but I haven't made any forward progress either. I went to the store and loaded up on the Airborne and Cold-eeze, so maybe some of that will help. I'm also going to start taking a multivitamin every day as a part of the Nutritional Challenge.

Lisa: Good for you to get your work in before the meet. Good luck resisting the whoopie pies. Wouldn't it be great if you could eat 1950 calories and maintain your weight.

Lily: Thanks for the link to the recipes. I had forgotten about those. Hope your recovery is going well.

Connie: Thanks for the BMR formula. Do you like the Nancy Clark book? She writes for one of the magazines I read and I've always thought she was good.

Maria: Hope you are doing well with your increase water intake. Did you get your 5 miles in?

Tracey: Glad you enjoyed your night on the town. Sometimes it's so worth the extra work to make up for it.

Dave: Best of luck at the dentist.

Beth: Hope you survived your busy weekend.

Have a great day everyone.

Connie: Holy crap, the calculation has me needing 1950 calories a day!!! Jeez, I think I eat around 1400-1500 and that is a lot for me. Maybe I didn't figure it right. I am so not good at math!!!

The calculation requires some pretty specific knowledge about what you are doing, right now. Unfortunately, that means counting calories for a while and keeping track of the calories you are burning. And remember, that the calories you burn with purposeful exercise are a daily average. That means that you figure in zero if you don't workout that day.

Also the percentage makes a big difference. You will notice that if you are on your feet for 8-12 hours a day, you get to figure 50 percent. So, you can calculate down from that point. Although I don't sit all day, (20%) I only figure about 25-30%. I do housekeeping, gardening (in the summer) and cooking, but I know I'm not on my feet all that much.

If you keep in mind that most people overestimate their calories (calorie creep is very real among even those who count) and they also over estimate the number of calories they burn. So, I usually use the smaller numbers to compensate for my frail human condition because I am as guilty of over inflation as anyone.

Connie: Thanks for the BMR formula. Do you like the Nancy Clark book? She writes for one of the magazines I read and I've always thought she was good

I really do like the book. It is full of lots of useful information for people at differnt stages in their lives. But it always takes into account that you are an athlete at every stage. It even gives you the information you need to keep track of protein (and how much to have) as well as carbs, etc.

Good Morning, Lean Mean Team!

I am happy to say I did get my five miles in yesterday, and in 68 minutes! This is a record for me, and I'm thrilled.:woohoo: Even better, I can still walk today!:lmao: It felt great the whole time, which is also new. I'm thinking about making my Monday and Thursday walks 5 miles as well. That's a big jump for me, as I had been averaging just over 4 -- but if I can do it that quickly....

I also drank my gallon! The week will be much easier as long as I really work to get it in today.

Cindy -- I'm sorry you aren't experiencing a rapid recovery. It is so frustrating to want to be well when it just isn't happening

Dave -- We're going to miss our Panda! Who will keep Bill and Vic from their mad scheme to take over the World and force them to offer a naked race?!:rotfl2:

Lisa -- It is much easier to get the workouts done first thing on the weekend. Unfortunately, my dh also agrees, so one of us is always not "first thing". It took me awhile to decide that even if I was "holding up the family" from going somewhere, I was going to do my workout! :cool1:

Lily -- Thanks for stopping in and bringing great info! We hope you are recovering!:grouphug:

Connie -- Ok, way too complicated for me. I make dh check ds's 4th grade math...:rolleyes1

Everyone have a great day, I'm off to teach Sunday School! If only they were little

Maria princess:

Good morning Lean Meaners!

Hoping everyone is having a wonderful Sunday.

No workouts to report. Yes, I’ve been slacking. But never fear, I’ll be back at it tomorrow morning. I really need to get back to weight training. So, that will be the first order of business (M/W/F), and I’ll get my runs in on SU/T/TH.

Lisa – Mmmmm, Red Snapper hot dogs! :rotfl2:

WWDave – You’re not in a drug induced state normally? :confused3 Hope the dentist deal is painless..

Cindy – Sorry you’re not feeling good. Take care of yourself.

Connie - Thanks for the BMR info.

Maria – WTG with the 5 miler! Great job! :thumbsup2

Y'all take care.

:)

Good afternoon Lean Meaners......I hope everyone is having a nice weekend.

I came down with an awlful headache yesterday.....and it curtailed my run. I just didn't feel good enough to go out. I felt guilty, but took it as a sign to rest up. I have another busy week ahead of me, with an extra shift again on Thursday, so I didn't exercise at all yesterday. I didn't eat very well either. But, on the good side, I am back at it today. I am planning on 5 to 7 miles today OUTSIDE! The weather is nice today, and warmer than it has been for awhile. I can't waste it.

I made the family some Cinnamon Swirl bread today from scratch. It is baking now and smells really good. I hope they like it. I figure I will cut slices and put it in the freezer for an easy breakfast this week.

Big Vic: Good to hear from you! So are you running today?

Cindy: I am sorry that you are sick again. So many people around here has been sick. It doesn't seem to get any better. My family has done fairly well this winter ((((knocking on wood!))))) I hope to make it out with no cold or flu.

Maria: Good job on the miles!:yay:

Lisa: You certainly up and to business early today. Good job!:woohoo:

Debra: Where are you?????

Beth

Beth said:
Big Vic: Good to hear from you! So are you running today?

Nope. I'm being a big slacker today and watching stock car racing from Las Vegas. :rolleyes1 :confused3 :rotfl:

I am so there! I will be watching too. I am a JR fan, and hoping for the best today (((((no wreck!))))).

Beth

I'm looking over that calculation and while I stayed w/in the amount suggested, I'm thinking that the cake and ice cream I devoured yesterday in honor of DS's bday was not w/in the calorie selection intended. Bad thing is there are leftovers today.

Trying to remain strong in the face of evil here.

Recipes for Runners on the go

Lisa: Thank you, thank you, thank you for the recipe. It sounds delicious & fairly simple. I'll be making the bread next week, and DOOD is drooling already. I hope your 8 miles on the TM wasn't too difficult and wow! can't believe that snowfall. Good luck with the gymnastics meet & the whoopie pies (I didn't know they were called that outside the Midwest)!

Connie: Thanks for posting the formula. Now I need to figure out how it jives with what I'm doing. Math...so difficult for me...must remember I'm college educated.... Once I get control over my current reading list, I think I'll look into the Nancy Clark book, too.

Dave: In case I don't post/see you again before your dental work, and PD for a painless time & quick recovery. Can't help you with the math, but the liquid diets I've been on have made me lose weight. And my patience. And my sense of humor.... :rotfl:

Tracey: I'm so glad you had a girl's night out with wine! It sounds like fun and a change of pace from your boys' days! Well worth the extra exercise, I hope?

Maria: I'm joining you on the getting-enough-water challenge. I've been doing a lot better since February, but am still not consistent enough for me to be comfortable moving on to something else. You just tell that life and work of yours to move over and make room for more DISing! And a great-feeling 5 miles/68 minutes? That's fantastic! The gallon of water is good too, but makes me want to use the facilities.

Lily: Thanks so much for that thread on food. There are veggie recipes or recipes I can make vegetarian for me to try, and I'm excited by new options! I know what you mean about the calorie intake not really being intended for cake and ice cream, but come on! Broccoli and carrot sticks don't exactly scream "I'm celebrating DS's birthday!" ;) Anyway, I hope you're feeling well and stronger each day!

Cindy: Awww, I hope you're feeling better. Awesome job on staying away from the sugar and maintaining your weight loss given your lingering illness(es). I'm sure the multivitamin will help, as will your continuing the eat healthy food.

Vic: Great to see/hear from you. Seven days a week, huh? That's committed (or ought to be...). :rotfl: Yea for your stock car racing day--I know how much you love it!

Beth: How was the fun festival and birthday party? Sounds like tons of busy fun! I hope your headache didn't curtail all your enjoyment of the weekend. I'm sorry if threw you slightly off your exercising and eating plans, but it sounds like your body wanted a little break. And you should pat yourself on the back for taking on another extra shift & getting right back outside for your run!

As for me: DOOD's finally been hit by the winter doldrums, right around the time we've come to expect it--about a week before spring break. It's particularly weird this time around because I'm no longer in the same boat, and he's experiencing the mid-semester meltdown alone. So this weekend meant extra ice cream for him: a lovely flan ice cream that is, I admit, delicious! I had two bites and then told him, "Get thee behind me, Satan!"

So he's busy trying to shake the blues, shifting up the workout routine & running longer and harder than usual, swimming, yoga, etc. Good for the team challenge, because I don't leave the gym until he does! Bad for me, because I'll make his favorite goodies to cheer him up. I'm sure the two things balance out, don't they? :confused3 :rotfl2: Anyway, we've had a long, intense weekend of comfort things: bad-movie watching, working out, museum hopping, and window shopping near coffee shops and bakeries. I'm not happy to report there was non-fat latte drinking & misc. noshing, but I am happy to report I tried to keep it to the healthiest things on the menus. We'll see what tomorrow's weigh-in says.

Nope. I'm being a big slacker today and watching stock car racing from Las Vegas. :rolleyes1 :confused3 :rotfl:

Go, Jr., Go!!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: It's always a big competition around here to pick the winner. I've got Jr. and MO boy Carl Edwards. My two favs!!!!

Debra -Hey, I'm taking Saturdays off. ;) :lmao:

Beth and Tracey - I was, and still am, a Dale Earnhardt Sr. fan, and now pull for Dale Jr.

Here's how bad I have it (besides naming the dog after Sr.)

Vic, that looks like our guest room - except it is filled with Disney stuff. :lmao:
A few years ago while on vacation at WDW of all places one of the top shelves fell, thus collapsing on all the other shelves - breaking all our nicer collectibles (including ones we had bought on our honeymoon at Disneyland Paris :sad1: ), shattering them to pieces and water damage on the other stuff from the snowglobes that broke. It was quite a mess.

According to that formula, I should only be eating around 1300 a day to lose my extra five pounds. I found another online calculator and it came out about the same.

Since yesterday I had my DD's 10th birthday party and had pizza and cake for both lunch and dinner I think I might have gone over that 1300. :lmao: I did however resist the Girl Scout cookies - I have 354 boxes piled up in my dining room. :scared1:

Good morning Lean Meaners! :cool1:

Another week has started. Another chance to be GOOD! :thumbsup2

Starting it off good here. Breakfast and Lunch in hand at work. I didn't do so well over the weekend, but that's ok. I did make some low carb cinnamon muffins for the week, and they turned out pretty good!:goodvibes

Debra: I am glad you checked in yesterday. I didn't see your post until today, but you seem to have had a nice weekend. Non-fat Lattes aren't that bad, are they? :confused3 I actually ate a whole sleeve of low fat crackers on Saturday! I didn't feel good with a headache, and I took it out on the crackers. Total mindless noshing. :confused3

Shan: Only 1300 calories??? :confused3 :confused3 I would have a huge problem with that. That isn't very many calories. You have to spend them wisely, and cake and ice cream sound good to me!!!!! :thumbsup2

Big Vic: I have to say I was impressed with your collectible room. WOW! I guess you were a hard core fan of Dale Sr. Cool! :thumbsup2

Where is Bill???? :confused3 :confused3 Haven't seen him, have you???

Beth

Yep, it was a little over 1300.
Actually, that sounds about right - although, quite sad! :lmao:
I'm only 4'11".
I put in that I average around 15 miles a week. I'm a little over that right now, but for the most part I think that is a fair guess.

Godd afternoon, everyone!
I left early this morning and ran errands all day, which means that I have to work out in the evening. We had a beautiful week-end here---around 75 yesterday and then today it has dropped to 30 and we're getting an ice and snow storm. Yuck! My boys and I found a new trail down by the river and walked for 5 miles on Saturday. It was so nice to get outside. Then yesterday I ran my 3, hard run with the wind in my face 75% of the time. I swear the wind was changing direction everytime I did.:scared:
Lisa...I hope the gymnastics meet went well. I was a gymnast for 10 years and loved it.
Vic...Unbelieveable room!:) I showed my boys and they are jealous. We've been to a few races and two years ago we went on pit road and the boys had their pics taken in front of Jr's car. They were so excited. On our way out they had us cross the track to go back to the stands and the boys sat right in the middle of the track. I didn't realize how steep it was. That looks like quite a man's room.(where is the muscle bound grunting smilie?)
Shan...Oh, Girl Scout cookies. We have a box of those Lemon ones. I think they're new here and boy are they good. I really should just throw them away, but at $3 a box, I just can't.
Beth...I understand about the crackers. The aforementioned Girl Scout cookies and I are having a problem right now.
Everybody else...Have a great day and stay strong.

Vic: You mean you're not bothering to count your numerous Saturday races as working out? Hmmm....interesting. ;) :lmao: I love your racing room. Is most of the memorabilia still in its packaging--I can't tell from the picture. Does that mean I can't play with them?

Shan: That's too bad about the collectibles, especially the honeymoon ones. 1300 calories a day would be quite a challenge. Wow. (I still haven't calculated mine--I think I'm scared to know.) I think I'd have to make friends with that five pounds, so I'm glad that you're stronger willed than I appear to be.

Beth: You caught me. You might have noticed I didn't specify the misc.noshing. The non-fat latte might not be bad for me, but the big-as-your-head bagel & cream cheese? Well...:rotfl: From my p.o.v. the low-fat crackers don't sound that bad, but I totally understand what you mean by the mindless noshing. And I'm wondering about Bill, too.

Tracey: Great job with the windy run. And I loved that you went exploring with your boys. That sounds like the kind of perfect active day I look forward to. :cloud9: Girl Scout cookies--hard to resist. It feels like you're doing such a good thing by ordering them, and then they sit there on your kitchen table, looking all coy.... The Samoas are sweet temptresses.

As for me: I almost had a great run today. My knee felt good and I I hit a good stride. But here's the rub, and Vic will understand: I have a small blister on my right foot. Am I to be plagued by these forever? I really need to get a new pair of shoes, hopefully this weekend, and I'll try new socks too. *Sigh* I remember telling DOOD I wasn't signing up for any more Disney events until I solved this problem--so much for that. But I won't run the marathon if I have blister problems going into it. Not this time. (She says now, knowing she's a big, fat liar.) ;) :rotfl2:

As for the eating front. Well, I had another no change week. The news would have upset me more, but I had such a good workout.... So it looks like I won't hit my St. Patrick's Day goal; I'm now pushing it back to my birthday (April). I'm consistently hitting my SparkPeople targets, so I need to figure out what I may be doing--so I'll be calculating my BMR.

One last note & a shout-out to Lisa. I think it was Lisa who said when you aren't sure if you're hungry or have a craving you should ask yourself if you'd eat an apple? Well, I thought I wanted that chocolate bar today, but wondered if I was just rebelling against the no weight-loss results. So I asked myself if an apple would suffice. Turned out, it would & did. I WAS hungry. So thanks Lisa. I didn't eat the chocolate and I did have a tasty Fuji apple!

Hey guys!!! I've been eating badly and just didn't feel like posting for a few days...I come in with my hung... :guilty:

I did the calculation and It looks like I should only be eating 1400 cal a day.

Today was a bad day...Little miniature hershey candies in the office...ugh. That's much worse than those two mints Shan! I think I ate 10-15!!! :scared1:

I have a question for you guys...I'll probably post on the weekly thread too, but tonight my knee started bothering me... It doesn't hurt when I walk. I don't think it bothered me on my run yesterday. It started bothering me a bit on the bike tonight. It only hurts when I press on it or squat. again...not when I walk. It's just above my knee. I've read about pains inside the knee, or just below, but above??? It's in the area that just as you squate, it's the very top there of the knee.

Any ideas what this may be? I do not want to injur it worse. I did the bike tonight and I'll aquacise tomorrow. My next run is supposed to be Wednesday. There is an aquajogger class on Wed night I could do instead.

Thanks guys!!!

Hope all is well!

Stacie

PS. Vic... the room...WOW! :goodvibes
