Ok I was watching a show that was done about bear hunting in Wisconsin and they are trying to make it so hunters do not take the females in the spring. Problem is the females are not marked or taged and in most cases when they come to the baited area they do so without the cubs to check it out first. SO my question is should they tag or mark the females or try to move the hunt to a later time of the season/year so as to not upset the population of females and cube etc.
I feel if they want to make it safe soto speak for the females they should trank them and tag them in a nature so as the hunters would know it was a female thus they will lessen the chance of killing a female with cubs.

season in Maine......we would be seeing alot more in the cities.....they are already moving in areas.....I have heard a few when I am out in the woods deer hunting....but our season is later

I think it would be wrong to do away with the hunt at all but if they are worried about the affect of it on the females and cubs then it should be up to the state and the MNR to make the corrections to lessen the issue IMHO

prevent over population and the animals dying from lack of food and no where to go......during the Maine winters....if we didn't have deer season we would be seeing more die of starvation and also from the harsh winters....they tend to run more in the roads......thus more accidents ....moose hunts are regulated by the amount of moose in certain areas ......also the number of accidents and DEATHS of humans by having the moose fall into the fronts of the vehicles.......fishing is the same regulations.....how many fish are stocked in certain lakes and ponds......then they put the limit on catching.....
Barbaric is not killing them .....but letting them suffer

Ia gree Pumba and we have the same thing up here with our hunts we have to cull the population of deer every couple years so they will have an extra season etc or the deer will start to starve to death. IMHO letting people shoot them and eat them is far better than just letting them die at the side of the road etc. As for the bears the family they followed actually used the bear meat they took from the bears it wasn't a kill just for the skin/trophy so if that was an issue they seem to be doing their part.

I think they should stop hunting all together. How barbaric!!!!

Unless you want wild animals roaming the streets they shouldn't stop hunting. What do you suggest for them to keep the numbers down to a managable level? It's a little too easy for people who live in the city to say 'just stop hunting'. I know I would rather not have bears living in my neighborhood.

I agree with you on this one Gymnasticsmom I live in a larger city and the people are always complaining about hunters etc well try living outside the city and having to deal with an overpopulated forest full of deer etc.

I live FAR from the city and it's a serious issue. I can't imagine how many deer there would be if there were no hunting. It's astounding now how many are hit.

That is a good idea dsny fn. Perhaps they will institute tagging soon.

Hunting programs are put in place as a way to help animal populations stay in check. If you didn't hunt them they'd overpopulate areas and put a tremendous burdon on their own food/water sources.
Animals nearing starvation in the wild is not a pretty sight especially when you see the young starving.

Now IMHO the only thing that's barbaric about hunting is if you do it in a cruel manner, injuring and not killing the animal or killing and leaving the carcass to rot.

Interesting to note though, hubby doesn't hunt OR fish! LOL

Thaks Ripleysmom and I agree if they are viewing it as an issue they need to take steps to correct it tagging I am refering to. I love fishing and hunting not that I have been in a very long time.

DSNY FN I agree with you. In our part of NJ we don't have a problem with bears but they have been a problem in the northern part of the state. Even so far as going onto people's decks. We live in the suburbs. There are wooded areas around us but it's a far cry from the country. We have deers all over the place they come right up to our patio and eat out of the garden. It's really dangerous to drive at night or early morning so the lesser traveled roads.

I don't agree with hunting as a sport and if it's done at all it should be quick and painless for the animal. I do agree it's necessary to prevent suffering from lack of food and to prevent possible attacks on people by hungry animals.

grandkids hunt with us.....I usually get a deer and we love the venison....I buy only very little hamburg to mix with the venison burger so that the meat sticks together.....venison and moose is very lean meat....so knowing that we usually get a deer in our family or extended family .....you must know that the population is very high still in this area.......I have had bear meat and I am not overly fond of it....a little to greasy for me......but if I had the chance to shoot one....I probably would and donate the meat to a local shelter that takes the game....

Not only hit but unless you have hit one I don't think anyone can imagine how many seriously injure drivers and do huge amounts of damage to cars.

In addition an over population of deer will absolutely eat anything in their path. Your lawn, your shurbs, your trees, the gardens.

I think it is very easy to make comments without given thought to the consequences.

This is a very ignorant thing to say. I don't mean that in a mean way, it's just that for the most part people don't understand hunting at all.

Did you know that for every boar that is hunted and killed it saves the lives of 3 bears. Reason being is that if the boars are not killed they will eat the cubs. So therefore, hunting is a necessity to keep the bear population from becoming extinct.

Hunting is a great way to spend time with your son daughter son in law etc and you get something out of it to. I enjoy hunting adn plan on taking my son when he gets old enough I taught my 7 year old daughter to shoot at the age of 3 she learned with a 22 longrifle.

I think they should stop hunting bear too

It truely is amazing the damage they can do. I had a young deer charge out of the woods one day and run right at my car. Luckily I was able to swerve and avoid it somewhat but it still took off my side mirror and scraped up the entire side of my car. It would have come right through the passenger window if I hadn't swerved. Friends of ours had a deer come completely through the windshield of the car. Luckily no one was seriously injured but the car was totaled.

We had one jump over the front of our car while driving past one of the golf courses one night while @ WDW.
