Bear Hugs & Piggy Kisses - Baby's 1st Trip ~ Updated 12/6: Aulani TR Started!!!

Glad Sci-Fi worked out for you! I have been to MM and for us it was just okay. We are trying Sci-Fi for the first time this Sept. I know it gets kind of mixed reviews, but for some reason I really want to try it! I can see how it wouldn't be the best in your situation, what with the two babies and wanting to have a conversation and all.

You have me on the edge of my seat for the next update!:)

I'm glad Sci-Fi ended up working out for the group, even if it wasn't the ideal seating situation. The waitress was pretty great with the toddlers! I'm glad they did so well throughout the meal. I can't say our first experience with Paxton there was as nice, but he has definitely gotten better.

Izzy looks so happy at the Osborne Lights! I pretty much have that same reaction when we go see them. :rotfl: Really incredible, though. My favorite thing to do on Christmas trips to WDW!

I can see where you're coming from when you say Sci Fi wasn't the best choice for places to eat with a big group and babies. Alex and I enjoy the shakes there, but I can't imagine trying to feed a baby without some kind of highchair table or regular table for them to eat from. I mean, I know it's possible, but in my mind it just means more work for the parents. You had to spoon feed the pickles and mashed potatos and ice cream to her.

It's great that you had a attentive server, though. Little things like extra bowls of mashed potatoes and goldfish can really go a long way in making an overall meal better.

As awesome as RNRC is, I think the Osbourne Lights were worth going to over the coasters. But it's terrible that they gave you a headache! I'm sorry to hear that all the stimulation was too much. I can see how that would happen, though. It's a lot to take in.

How helpful of Mama Melrose to get you a table at Sci Fi, I honestly didn't know restaurants did that! And that Sci-Fi turned out pretty good (though I was cringing the whole time, this was one of our all time worst meals with Aria :rotfl: ) and your evening seeing the lights and the bus ride (I totally laughed out loud when you said you continued awkwardly walking with them after saying goodbye) sounded awesome too. Your cliffie is so mean, and I have no idea what it could be! hmmmm.

Good to know about your Mama Melrose experience. We've never been there because it never seemed like a "must do", but there are not a lot of restaurant options at DHS, so I've been curious about it. I think everyone should try Sci Fi. It's a unique atmosphere and the burgers and shakes are quite good. However, not the most conducive to conversation. :rotfl:

You have me on the edge of my seat for the next update!:)

What did you forget?!?!! You better so an update soon! I must know!!! ;)

Sorry to disappoint, but you guys are gonna be waiting for more than the next update. Because 24 hours in real time = a whole bunch of updates, the way I'm going. :rotfl2: Sorry! I had no idea that line would be such a big deal. :confused3

I was a bit worried, because I've read those TRs with toddler troubles at Sci Fi and I didn't know what to expect with Izzy. But, we didn't really have a choice, so went with it. And, luckily, it went about as well as it could. I think it helped that there was a lot for her to look at (cars, another baby, a big screen, etc.) And ice cream, of course. :rotfl:

Yes, they are pretty awesome. I just can never get over how much time and effort and precision it must take to put them up each year. :worship: I can barely handle sloppily throwing out some lights around our house for the holidays.

Yes, the shakes there are GREAT! But, yeah, the feeding was a little awkward. Especially because we never did spoon feeding with Izzy. We followed the "baby led weaning" method of introducing solids to her, so she was feeding herself from the beginning. And I'm sure she would've fed herself the ice cream if there was any place to set it that she could reach. She did fine with it, though. Thank goodness for her snack cup of puffs, easy-to-hold pouches, and that little cup of goldfish!

It's great that you had a attentive server, though. Little things like extra bowls of mashed potatoes and goldfish can really go a long way in making an overall meal better.
Yes, she really made this meal a success for us. Wish I knew her name to recommend her. Those little touches were so nice. :thumbsup2

Yeah, and the coasters can be done during the day - this was the only chance we had for the Osborne Lights, though, so it was a no-brainer. The sudden headache was crazy, though. It freaked me out a bit because that had never happened to me before. But it went away and I was fine after, so :confused3

I didn't know they did that either. So, I guess the lesson we've learned here is: if you want to go to Sci Fi, but don't have an ADR, head on over to Mama Melrose. :lmao: Hopefully next time you go (whenever that may be), Aria will have a great time. :goodvibes

and your evening seeing the lights and the bus ride (I totally laughed out loud when you said you continued awkwardly walking with them after saying goodbye) sounded awesome too.
It was a good evening. Saying goodbye and staying together was SO awkward. :rotfl2: Who knew they'd be walking down the bus loading area? :confused3

Your cliffie is so mean, and I have no idea what it could be! hmmmm.
Man, I really had no idea I had that good of a cliffhanger. I'll just say that it's not life or death and everyone is fine and there's nothing scary...but it is something that I'm still disappointed about to this day. :rolleyes1

Hi, all. We got our photos from Izzy's 18-month photo shoot back today, so thought I'd share a few highlights. I think they do a good job of capturing what this age is like: independent, running wild, having fun, but still needing cuddles. :goodvibes Enjoy!

Precious!! I especially love the one of dug holding her up in front of the window! Beautiful!
Where did you guys take them? It looks like a train station almost.

And I totally thought it was a trip update and got all excited about finding out what you forgot. Lol

Photo's are too cute for words!!! She is so adorable! :lovestruc :lovestruc :lovestruc

I LOVE seeing her photos bc she is so close in age to Maddie and I can just picture what she must be like!! :cutie:

Is that a train station you're in??? What a cool spot for a shoot! LOVE IT ALL!

I love the pictures! This is such a fun age! (Okay every stage has been awesome though)

The Australian really brought things home by telling us all about how the “cute” animals in Australia are all really just scary human-killers. He was saying that kangaroos are actually really violent. And koalas are actually “killer koalas” – they jump out of trees onto people. So, I guess we all learned a lot about Australian animals that night – stay away from them!

I have to admit I have spent the better part of three days going back and reading your trip reports. First off, congratulations on your beautiful daughter! Second, thanks for sharing your stories. I'm working to become debt free and you and your husband have definitely inspired me to keep plugging away at my goal!

As an Aussie, I have to admit that the Aussie on your bus was probably scaring you with talk of "drop bears", which are vicious koalas that drop from trees and pounce on unsuspecting foreigners. (Does that sound familiar?) The amusing thing to us is that it's a tall tale -- there is no such thing. But, I can assure you that any camper in Australia takes a quick peek in a bush toilet (porta-potty) to see if any spiders are lurking inside and ready to bite your bum! (That's the truth!)

And thanks for the reminder on the Weet-Bix. Oh, it's SO good! (And it's also how I remember N-E-S-W.)

Thank you! Yeah, she looks so happy in that picture! Considering we had a toddler that wasn't really into holding a pose, I think she got some great shots.

Ha, you're going to have to wait for a while. Remember, we don't realize what we forgot until the next night - it's going to take a few updates to get to that. Sorry!

I should have mentioned that. It's Union Depot in St. Paul. It was refurbished pretty extensively and is really an amazing building. It is used for transit now, but we were there on a Sunday morning and it was nearly empty. Izzy loved having a chance to run around in a big building. Our photographer friend had done another shoot there recently and recommended it - worked out great! :thumbsup2

Thanks! :goodvibes

Yeah, I felt the same way about Maddie when I was reading your TR. This is a pretty fun age to see their little personalities coming out.

Cute, cute, cute! Love the pics! Such a fun age!
Thanks! Yeah, I really am enjoying this age. Old enough to have personality and some communication, but young enough to be pretty agreeable still.

I love the pictures! This is such a fun age! (Okay every stage has been awesome though)
Thanks! I agree - every stage has it's good stuff. This is pretty fun, though.

:welcome: and thank you! :flower3: Very flattering! Keep on going with the debt pay down. For us, it seemed like an impossible dream nearly the whole time. We had a plan and followed it as best we could and, sure enough, one day we were done. Now we only have mortgage debt (which we are paying extra on to be done early). No credit card debt and no car loans. (Side note - paying for a car in cash (well, check) is a crazy feeling). You can do it!

Ha, I love all the Aussie input! :thumbsup2 Yeah, the "drop bears" sounds like what he was talking about. I wondered about that because, as I wrote the update, I looked it up online and didn't find anything indicating that koalas actually did anything like that. Yikes on the spiders in the porta-potty! :scared1: So, Weet-Bix are good, huh? I'll have to remember that if/when I ever get to Australia. ::yes::

Adorable pictures! :goodvibes Especially love the one where she's walking ahead of you and Dug.

But wow...18 months already?!? Weren't you just posting pictures from her first birthday?....

cute pictures - time flies huh? We have been soooooo bad about getting pictures of Peter done compared to Olivia. At this rate we will be lucky if there is any photographic evidence of this third kid :rotfl:

Love the one where she is running away from the two of you ;)

Yeah, she did a lot of running off when we tried to pose. Just too fun to have a big empty area to run around! :rotfl:

It sure flies by! And happy (almost) 1st birthday to Landon!! :goodvibes

I'm sure it gets harder to keep doing photo sessions as you add in more kids. We've been lucky so far that we found a mom/friend that does great work for a very affordable price, so we're able to keep doing the shoots. Otherwise, it can sure get spendy. :faint:

Wow, what great pictures! Makes me start plotting a one year old shoot for my little one. Your little girl looks so adorable and it's wonderful how a skilled photographer can really capture a baby's personality.

Thanks! And happy first birthday to your little guy! :goodvibes I agree about the personality coming through in the pictures. I love some of the little expressions she caught. :thumbsup2

We had a decent night’s sleep in preparation for our big Animal Kingdom day. We were in bed shortly after 10pm and got up around 6:45am (with a brief Izzy nursing wake-up at 4:15am). Not bad at all!

We got ready and headed out for our 7:30am ADR at Kona Café.

Once we were seated, we got Izzy started on her breakfast:

Mmmmm, more berries! (Side note: that Minnie on the placemat - Izzy will "feed" her now, if we ask her if Minnie wants some. Too cute!)

Proof that Dug was at Kona:

And proof that I was there too:

I, of course, got a glass of the yummy Lilikoi juice:

And Dug got his beloved Kona Coffee Press Pot:

The waitress told Dug to wait a few minutes before pressing it. In the meantime, Izzy stole my straw:

Because, you know, straws are super awesome! :rotfl:

Then it was time for Dug to do his press pot (and you will see/hear how much Izzy is enjoying her new straw):

(click to watch)

After:

Dug ordered the Samoan (he’d had this before and loved it):

I got the obligatory Tonga Toast:

I believe Izzy sampled it also. Delicious! :thumbsup2

It was a good breakfast at Kona, as usual. Time to head out:

We had to stop for a quick picture since this spot was empty:

And out to the bus stop we went:

There was a monorail going overhead, which Izzy was fascinated by:

All bus stops should be this pretty:

Because we’d just missed an Animal Kingdom bus (we saw it go by on our way to the bus stop!), we had to wait a bit. Watched some DHS buses come through. There were some little girls that were walking along/balancing on the little wooden posts lining the area (you can see some in the picture where Izzy is looking up at the monorail). Izzy was watching closely, and then decided to join in. However, she was not as coordinated and needed my help. But she wanted to be like the big girls. (On a side note, she’s currently in a little toddler tumbling class and is getting much better at this sort of thing).

Eventually, an Animal Kingdom bus arrived. Now, here’s where the Poly fails (and it’s not the only place like this). At many places (i.e. – the parks, Pop Century, Downtown Disney, etc.), there are queues where people line up for the bus they are waiting for. However, at the Poly, it’s a free-for-all with a shared bus stop. Now, maybe it’s normally not an issue, but it was this morning. We had been waiting quite some time for an Animal Kingdom bus and only DHS buses were coming through. So, we weren’t standing right at the curb, since we had to stay out of the way of the DHS crowds (and had to let Izzy play, etc.). So, we rushed up as soon as the bus came, but there was already a mob that had packed in around it. Even though we were the first ones to the bus stop, we had to wait for a ton of other people to get on (and it’s much harder to slip through the crowd with a stroller and a baby, so we basically just had to wait as people cut in around us). When we finally got on, it was standing room only. :worried:

I remember reading a thread once on the DIS about whether or not people should have to give up their seats on the buses to people with babies and/or pregnant women. It was a hot debate. There were those that said it was rude not to do so. There were those that said: I’m tired (and/or have non-obvious physical issues) and want to sit, I was here first, they can wait to get a seat on another bus, just like I did.

Before this experience, I fell in pretty strongly with the second group, to be honest. There were times that we’d have seats on a bus and pregnant women and/or parents with babies would get on and look around like they fully expected someone to just give them a seat. And usually someone would, by the way. But I just couldn’t understand why they would get on a bus that was standing room only (and stay on it). This was always on the way back from a park and buses run fairly frequently to the resorts. Just stay at the front of the line and let the wanna-standers pass you. You’ll be the first on the next bus. We have done that before. Yes, it’s a few more minutes of standing in line, but you’re guaranteed a seat. (As a side note, it also bothered me when they’d look at Dug for a seat. Yes, he is a young guy, but he also has back problems that get aggravated after a day in a Disney park. Standing on a bus is not helpful to him and it’s painful. If there is only one seat left, I always let him sit and I stand, as I don’t have any physical issues like that, other than being tired).

So, this is my long lead-in to saying that we got on the bus and found that all the seats had just been filled. If we had been somewhere that another bus would be around soon, I would have gotten off and waited. But it had taken a very long time for this bus to come and who knew how long it would be for another one (plus, the same thing could happen again). We had a Fast Pass+ to use and were already into that time frame. We couldn’t wait. And people did always give up seats to people like us, right? ::yes:: Yeah, not this time. Not a single person even offered. Of course, I’m sure they didn’t realize that we had been waiting for the bus longer than they had. I’m sure they were just thinking what I described – oh, those people with the baby should wait for the next bus to get a seat – why are they staying on this bus? In all fairness, I should mention that a large percentage of the people sitting had small children on their laps. But certainly not everybody. In fact, there were some children sitting in their own seats that easily could have been sitting in a lap. Those got to me the most. So, Dug stood in the aisle with the stroller, trying not to let it (or himself) tip over and hit anyone in the crowded space. I stood with one arm holding Izzy and the other arm around a bar, hanging on tight. In retrospect, I should have asked someone for a seat, but I'm just not very assertive like that. And, if Izzy had been a few months older, she could have possibly stood on her own and held a bar. But not at that point. I really wished I'd had the Ergo on, but we couldn't manage that on a moving bus. So, I just stood and held her.

I have to say, this was dangerous. Not only balancing around corners and stuff, but hanging onto a baby that long. Due to the movement of the bus, I couldn’t safely let go of the bar with my one hand, so I couldn’t switch which arm I was holding her in, or even re-adjust her. My arm that was holding her literally fell asleep (completely!) and I had to keep holding her with it. Based on this, I’d revise my previous opinion on the whole issue a bit with: once someone is on the bus, if they look like they might not be safe (for a baby or a pregnancy or other issue), then someone capable really should offer them a seat (or even offer to hold the baby while they stand). Whatever the circumstances of them riding that bus were. Because they may have felt that they had no choice. Now, not everyone will be in this category and they may decline the offer. I rode a rental car shuttle bus while standing at 6 or 7 months pregnant. It was fine and I was fine. I could have waited for another, but I was okay with standing, so I stayed on. I’ve seen people with kids a bit older than Izzy where the kids are able to stand and hold the bar with just a little spotting from the parent. And they are fine and even having fun. But this just felt dangerous to me. If the bus made a sudden move, who knows what would have happened, especially not being able to feel my arm at all.

So, yes, that was my really long and overly-detailed and opinionated way of saying, “We had to stand on the bus, and I didn't like it.” :lmao:

The bus from the Poly to Animal Kingdom actually makes a stop at Blizzard Beach. A couple minutes before that stop, a mom gave me her seat, as her young son would not stay in her lap or even near her and kept running around the bus. She got up to stand with him for the last couple minutes until they got to Blizzard Beach. Thank goodness! :worship: Poor Dug had to keep standing until the waterpark-goers got off the bus, though. At that point, we were both able to sit for the rest of the ride. We had never been so happy to arrive at Blizzard Beach! It took a while for my arm to regain sensation again. So weird to have the entire thing numb like that. After that, later in the trip, I had several episodes of severe shoulder pain on that side while holding Izzy. I literally had to hand her off immediately or put her down, since it hurt so much. But it was just intermittent, so I was mostly okay. And, of course, she wanted to be held by Mommy a lot on this trip, so there was a lot of holding still to come.

Finally, we arrived in Animal Kingdom! :cool1:

Up next: Why do we always lose each other in Animal Kingdom? And Izzy’s first safari!

Ugh, it always really bothers me when no one offers a seat to elderly / obviously pregnant people on public transit. I think people who don't have kids may not realize how dangerous it is to stand with a baby in your arms on a bus, though. I never even thought about it until I started contemplating parenthood ( and realized you couldn't pay me enough to wrestle a stroller through nyc's public transit system). Still, that doesn't excuse the people on your bus, since it sounds like they were mostly families.

FWIW, people are usually happy to give up a seat when you explain the situation. I ended up doing that on trains when I was pregnant - not because of pain, but because my balance was wonky and it just felt unsafe to stand.

This is all a very roundabout way of saying 1) boo to the people who made your trip harder than it should have been and 2) people are usually just in their own bubble, aren't they?

Anyway, hope the rest of your day was better!
