Just as an aside, that's EXACTLY what we said about the Conservative party here in the UK. The socialist "Labour" party, headed by Tony Blair, have enjoyed three consecutive landslide elections in a row and a rash of truly awful Conservative leaders seemed to have laid the opposition to rest in a very final way. They were even being supplanted by the third and far left Liberal Democrats party.
In my personal opinion, this was not a welcome turn of events. Democracy depends on opposing views and for the last ten years we've had a socialist left wing government contesting with a even more left wing opposition. For ten years, we have had practically NO conservative representation in Parliament.
In a way, it was quite encouraging. The UK has been in a monstrously good state ever since the socialists gained power with an economy that has been quite literally roaring forward. The property market is terrifyingly buoyant (probably too much!) and we've been relatively free of scandal.
We've lived without a strong conservative voice for a decade with massive bouts of good fortune.
However, it was always destined to revert, just as it will in the USA (and your opposition has only suffered two borderline defeats!) The conservatives have found themselves a good leader (who is actually labelled as a left wing politician) and Labour's growing amounts of bloat is once again being challenged.
In any modern democracy, the key lies in the opposition. It keeps us in check and is so, so precious. True, the last decade has been ser-weet without the conservatives, but times must and Labour's surge of popularity is naturally waning.
Soon enough I think we'll have the conservatives in charge once more. They too will wane and we'll be back with Labour again.
It's like a see-saw.
