I want to repost this here because of the free samples of this ReNu. Possibly some of you have recieved this contact lens solution.

B & L has recalled their ReNu MoistureLoc Multi Purpose solution for soft contact lens. DD had a couple of bottled and I just threw them out. Evidently eye infections have developed with continued use of this product. Blindness can result, so toss this stuff out!

Here is a link to more info:

ETA: new link

I can't get the page to come up with that link, but was wondering about it. I have a new bottle of this brand and was wondering if all batches were involved, or any other specifics.

I saw something about it on CNN.com earlier today but it was really vague.. it also mentioned generic brands & that it has been an issue since 2005... Also it didn't seem to be an actual recall.. the article I saw said use with caution....

My eye Dr. just gave me about four (sample) bottles of this two weeks ago... :confused3

Link not working for me either , I tried to search on MSN and my local news site but I could not find anything. Please post any info that anyone has.

Thank you

I use this and have been having awful probelms with my eyes the past two months. i am now wearing glasses and going to the Dr. this saturday. Thanks for posting this, i saw it on the news last night.

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US contact lens maker Bausch and Lomb said it was withdrawing a cleaning solution from sale after a spate of rare fungal infections that can lead to loss of sight.

In a health bulletin, the
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it was investigating a rise in infections among wearers of soft contact lenses.

"At this time, Bausch and Lomb has agreed to stop shipping the ReNu MoistureLoc brand contact lens solution," the FDA said.

"The infection, a fungal keratitis caused by the Fusarium fungus, may cause vision loss requiring corneal transplants," it warned, describing the incidence as "rare but serious".

Bausch and Lomb has already stopped sales of its ReNu multi-purpose solutions in Singapore and Hong Kong after a spate of Fusarium keratitis infections among contact lens users there since February.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (
CDC) said it had received reports of 109 cases of suspected fungal keratitis in 17 different states.

Of 30 cases for which complete data are available, 26 of the patients reported using a Bausch and Lomb ReNu solution in the month prior to the onset of infection.

"Bausch and Lomb's first priority is the health and safety of consumers," the company's chief executive Ronald Zarrella said in a statement.

"The CDC data released today are both troubling and perplexing, as there is an apparent disproportionate representation of US-manufactured ReNu with MoistureLoc in the underlying data," he said.

Zarrella stressed that no proven link between the infections and the ReNu solution has yet been found.

"Nonetheless, in the interest of public health, we will voluntarily suspend US shipments of ReNu with MoistureLoc while we pursue all appropriate steps to bring this investigation to a definitive conclusion," he said.

I just got off the phone with my eye doctor's office after hearing this report on the news this morning. I usually use Clear Care, but they had a manufacturing problem and were off the shelves for the last month so I switched to ReNu (figures!). Anyway, I'm dumping the 1/2 bottle of ReNu that I have today, and will dump the free sample when it arrives. The eye doctor suggested Opti Free for the time being (although Opti Free was used by at least one of the 28 people who developed that rare fungal infection). It's still better than the 26 people who developed the infection while using ReNu! I plan to return to my beloved Clear Care very soon - they are supposed to have product back on the shelves this month. It's also worth mentioning that they aren't completely sure how these people developed the fungus - they think that poor contact handling procedures may have come into play as well.

Just threw out 6 trial size bottles I got from eye doctor a couple of weeks ago. I'll stick with the generic Equate I get at WalMart.

I was thinking the same thing because I use Target's generic but aren't the generic typically made by the same people andjust private labeled for the store, etc? Wonder if there is a way to find out who REALLY makes the generic...

Just remember that B&L has a few different types of Renu solution and this seems to only apply to the newer Moisture Loc one..not the no rub multi purpose type one

Are you sure? The 6 I tossed all read "Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc Multi Purpose Solution. No Rub"

I have the two of them in front of me right now...

Renu Multiplus Multi-purpose No Rub
Renu w/ MoistureLoc Multi-purpose No Rub

I just bought a new bottle of the MoistureLoc last month that I haven't even opened yet - guess I should toss it unless maybe Walmart will let me exchange it. I also got one of the MoistureLoc samples last month that I'll be tossing. My DH and I rarely wear our contacts but I don't really want to take any chances.

I usually use the regular Renu Multipurpose No Rub and will continue to use it. The problem seems to be with the new Renu, the one that has MoistureLoc. I had just bought a travel size bottle to take with me on Friday. It's a perfect size and a brand I've used. Oh well, I 'll be taking it back to Target tomorrow and just taking my regular Renu.

Great me too. I use this stuff off and on and the Target brand as well. My eyes have been bothering me for the past few weeks and I too made an eye doc. appointment and have been wearing my glasses a lot! I made an eye doctor appt, but it's not for a couple of weeks. Is this something the optomotrist can examine or do I need to make an appt. for the actual opthamologist?

this is odd cause Ive been haing a hard time finding the AOsept disinfect solution

it seems strange that after that news aired I cant find that solution

this product was also made by Bausch and Lomb :confused3

I think if an optomotrist looks into your cornea he or she can see if you have an infection or not. B & L is saying to not wear your contacts if you have blurry vision and irritated eyes. My sons fiance now has blurry vision and irritated eyes. She used this solution for a while too.

Clear Care started shipping again this month. :cool1:

I am not sure why this is labeled as a Recall, because they have not recalled the product according to the article. "Graham said, "All of the data about the formulations approved by the FDA suggests that it kills the fungus. That's why it's so puzzling."

She also emphasized this is not a recall, but simply a temporary suspension of shipments until more can be known."

I use the B & L No Rub Solution and have for years, no problems yet, expect when I sleep in my contacts (but that is not there fault). I will just keep an eye out for now. Just follow the simple precautions and wash your hands well before you touch your eyes.
