Bargaining in the furniture store

Is it possible to bargain in a furniture store? If I have cash and want to buy several different pieces in a store like Value City, can I offer less? How does this work? Anybody tried it and successful?

I have led Financial Peace University 4 times. I have had 2 furniture owners in my classes. Both have said that if you bring in cash they will bargain with you. They would much rather have cash than any sort of credit plan. Good Luck. I've never had to work with a large city furniture store or a chain.

Bob's won't. I had cash and tried it, but no go. Since the set we wanted was still about 50% less than the ones in other stores we bought it anyway.

By cash, do you mean like paper cash, or like, can they swipe my credit or debit card and that would be the same? I've never bargained for furniture but I would never use their credit plans either. Maybe i'm missing out on something!

I don't think this approach works at any of the major chains. I was with my mom at Ethan Allen last month when she bought a sofa and she asked if they had a cash discount, but they don't.

To the previous poster, it definitely wouldn't work using a credit card because the merchant has to pay a fee for it.

I'm sort of timid and couldn't imagine myself actually trying to negotiate the price of furniture. But - whenever I buy furniture, I always ask if they offer a discount for cash. So far, I've always been offered 5-10% off the price. I've never used this technique at a chain though ...

Value City does not bargin. That's the price you pay.

Now what we do at a more "traditional" furniture store is work on other things, like "we want free delivery and set up" (Stores around here love to charge for it LOL!) and for "mom and pop" stores the "cash discount"

We bought a bunk bed set at Value City and were able to negotiate free delivery. Actually, the sales associate came back to us with a lower price than was published without even asking for it. After that, we negotiated for free delivery. It's worth a try! Good luck!

I have gotten 10% off at Raymour and Flanigan for not using their payment plans. I used a credit card and not cash. This was a while ago though. It is worth asking about.

We were at a furniture store, and in the clearance section and I found the absolute perfect dining room table. I bargained 100 extra off the price listed because there were some cracks in the legs where they had bolted it together too tightly.

I don't know if I'd try and bargain for something that didn't have a defect, though. What's my leverage-I want it for less because I'm special?

I have actually gotten a discount on furniture by paying with cash. It was only 10%, but every percent helps.

There must be two "Value City" store types. Because ours does NOT do delivery.

Is the one you are using a furniture store. Our's is kind of "close out" dept store. (Like a Big Lots?)

It doesn't hurt to ask...just a simple "Do you offer a cash discount?" can't hurt.

I think we got 5% off at Kittles when we purchased our sectional and paid cash. I think we even got 10% off appliance purchases at HH Gregg when we bought our house.
