Avatar land coming to Animal Kingdom!!

But it's not odd to be excited about the prospects for what it might be. The positive comments have (virtually) all been about enthusiasm for the possibilities, since none of us have any details yet.

For the record, I don't think anyone's opinon on this is odd, whether it be positive or negative.

My point was that it's no different to be excited about the possibilities then it is to be disappointed. The post I responded to said it's odd to dislike something that doesn't exist yet, so then it would be odd to like it too. None of us know details. By that logic, this thread should be an announcement and nothing more, no opinions.

But I'm done going in circles about that, that's not what this thread is for. :)

Poor response to the one that got away. Ride...sure. Land...wasted resources. A land dedicated to Star Wars would open up infinite possibilities, much like HP. Avatar doesn't hold those same possibilities. Is this a Lasseter decision? Did he have input? Very disappointed by this move.

Actually, I think Avatar offers more possibilities then Star Wars and Harry Potter because of Pandora. However, I think making a land out of any of them is disappointing.

But I agree, this screams response to Harry Potter, but that didn't require a response from them at all.

To the contrary... I think this definately opens up more possibilities than HP, and possibly more than Star Wars.

Just from reading the information on the Disney Parks blog, it's easy to see that this isn't "Avatar The Movie Part 1 - Land". This is much more of a land built upon the idea of the world of Pandora, which Avatar was based.

From what we saw in the first movie, the Jungle life is full of amazing creatures and plantlife that all show similarities that hint at their common ancestry (the planet/the jungle/ whatever).

The 2nd movie is rumored to be about the oceans of the planet.

So with Cameron's attention to details, It's pretty obvious that he has done a lot to develop this world and it's ecosystem. (In much the same way that Lucas developed the whole backstory of the Empire and Rebellion in order to be able to better tell his story of a farm boy rescuing a princess in space before defeating the bad guy).

So ultimately, WDI has a LOT of stuff to work with already. I highly doubt that Disney would be talking about developing an entire land just based off the narrative told in 1-3 movies. It's much more logical that they are building a land which will almost tell it's own narrative. (Just like Star Tours doesn't tell the narrative of the Star Wars movies, but tells it's own narrative of a tour company operating in that galaxy.)

Actually, that's a different story....Animal Kingdom needs more rides. So I yes to Avatar.

I was commenting on what you said about people's opinions being odd, not what your opinions are about the new land.

I have said before I don't doubt Disney can pull this off, I'm sure they can and it will be beautiful. I don't think they're going to skimp on it, especially if Cameron has a say in what happens. I'm sure they'll make some cool rides there too.

It's not that I don't want movies in AK. It's that I don't want an entire land based on one single movie franchise. I would be disappointed if this was coming to any of the 4 parks, and if it was a Disney movie as well. I'm disappointed that that's the direction they're choosing to take compared to what they've done in the past.

People are allowed to like anything they want, and they're allowed to dislike anything they want as well. It's strange to me that just because Disney is doing this you think it's weird that Disney fans aren't allowed to dislike the idea of it. :confused3

Now you're just being whiny and difficult. I never said no one's allowed to like or dislike something, and you know that. As you are fully aware, I said that I find it weird that someone can dislike something as much as you seem to dislike this without knowing much about it.

So you can call someone you don't "know" whiny and difficult, but it's weird I dislike the idea of an Avatar Land? ;)

If you think this is whiny, oh boy, you ain't seen nothin yet

Don't worry, I have every reason to believe you can top this. But I'm not going to play the circular argument game anymore, there are far more interesting points to discuss on this.

You're right we are not visionaries or imagineers but we are PAYING guest who have dislikes and likes and when you are a customer based industry, you get customer who get to say what they think about your ideas.

And let's not act like disney has never laid an egg before. Can we say the godawful Captain EO or the equally as horrible "Stitch".

I don't understand why if we don't like a particular idea all of a sudden we're "haters". Why is it that if you don't partiuclar agree with evey thing disney does all of a sudden we're "complainers, negative, have no faith or uniformed".

I think it's coming down to, for some anyway, chosen attitude and perspective. Do you see the glass half full or half empty? Not everyone who is pessimistic or not in love w/ the idea is a hater, just as not everyone who is optimistic and encouraged by the idea is a Disney blow sunshine and puppies and kittens w/ every breath either. Far left/far right. Most people fall in between those polar opposites.
Given the scope of the WDW I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. I'll be glass half full, you can be glass half empty.

I'm certain though that the Stitch thing wasn't a visionary making that call, but a bean counter/suit/Eisner asking for the ever popular in business today of repurposing something on the cheap. Having worked for publishers that did that as a matter of course, I puke thinking about it. I am certain hands were tied on that. And as people have said before, and I'll agree with, Disney does make mistakes. Capotan EO. Never saw it, never will. :rotfl: Not a fan. :lmao:

And I am a small business owner who MUST cater to my customers. I DO know a bit about this. But I also, don't let my customers tell me what is beautiful and how to paint my horses. My customers have faith in me. They all spend thousands on my horses because they know what they are getting is a excellent quality product. Those that don't, don't buy from me. Same Re: Disney. You can't please everyone. Thankfully WDW is HUGE! Plenty of place for us all to go!

I am not a big fan of the movie, but if this land calls for some extreme coaster, I am all for this new land :cool1:

Well at least its not a Stitch Land, Cars Land, Nemo Land or any kind of Pixar Land

Found this via some updates on Twitter....

This morning Disney has announced plans to bring James Cameron’s film franchise “Avatar” to Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park at Walt Disney world. In a “long-term creative partnership,” Cameron and his team will act as creative consultants with Walt Disney Imagineering with construction on the new land beginning by 2013.

Specifics of the new Animal Kingdom themed land are not yet revealed, though a press conference is being held at Walt Disney Imagineering headquarters in Glendale, Calif. today. Plans are expected to feature more one ride in a whole new park area.

Mythical creatures were intended to be part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park since its opening, but this is the first opportunity for Disney to showcase more than animals on Earth.

Couldn't they have picked a movie that wasn't just stupid? Couldn't they have picked a movie that didn't steal ideas from the American Indian story?

How would that really look dramatically different from any other of the lands or parks? It wouldn't. If they want to go DIFFERENT, and clearly they do, sci-fi/ another world is the way to go. You aren't going to find glowing plants or ferns taller than a building on Earth by following anything we've already come to know like Pocahontas. A film that did poorly my Disney standards I might add.

I dont know if I like that. Although I would love to experience Avatar I dont like the idea of Disney buying blockbusters. Disney has always been "kiddie" in their purchases (pooh, muppets, power rangers). They have the comics now but havent tried to integrate them yet. It just worries me. What if they lose the Disney charm? :confused3

Um...there is also Indiana Jones and Star Wars....those movies and tie-ins were "bought." When my kids were little, Indiana Jones was pretty scary for them.

We loved "Avatar"; although we did make remarks about an "adult version of Fern Gully" and make comparisons with "Pochahontis."

Seeing Avatar in big 3-D literally took my breath away - for the first time I didn't feel like I was watching CGI - the technology developed by James Cameron's group that made the film work so well was AMAZING.

I think the mythical beasts of Pandora could fit very well with AK and if they could inlcude the nighttime beauty of Pandora to help the park stay open later, that would be wonderful.

If this gives the AK haters one more reason to stay away, so be it. More room for us who have always loved this park! :lovestruc
