Avatar land coming to Animal Kingdom!!

If Walt Disney himself came back from the dead and posted his own grand idea for new attractions, there would still be a whole hoard of whiners and moaners on this board, saying how much they, "DON"T LIKE IT", "HATE IT", "THIS IDEA IS RUINING MY MAGICAL DAY".

You cannot please everyone.

Are you telling me there isn't ANYTHING at Disney you don't care for? I ADORE Disney and you will be hard pressed to find someone more a cheerleader/pixie dust huffer...but I HATE Stitch's Great Escape, and I don't particularly care for Judi Dench's voiceover on Spaceship Earth. I still ride both rides, but I roll my eyes the whole time.

And what of all the "hate" for Dinoland?

I defend the DDP, Free Dining, the wonderful restaurants, the hotels, the state of the parks, the CM's...EVERYTHING. But Disney has selected a film I simply did not like to base an entire section of the park on. What am I supposed to do?? Jump for joy?

Would you be doing the happy dance if Disney said they were making a land based on Twilight or The Happening or some other movie YOU didn't like?

True, Disney can do amazing things with the technology and I won't lie, I will probably ride it when it opens. The disappointment that we feel though is that to many people, me included, this is not a beloved property and is not as universal as some of the other 3rd party properties. Star Wars and Indiana Jones have definitely stood the test of time and keep getting introduced lovingly to new generations.

When I saw Avatar in the theaters I was bored at parts, thought it was very derivative in the storyline, and also felt the story not believable in other parts. So sorry if I am not jumping up and down out of joy at the moment. Yes, I am glad that they are adding a new attraction(s). It's just that there are so many other properties that are Disney owned that I feel strongly about that I would have rathered they used instead. The story is a big part of the fun and in this case, I just don't love the (movie) story.

Now of the things that Disney could have refurbished/ improved on that would get me excited - something instead of Sounds Dangerous, Beastly Kingdom (I feel a more universal appeal with legendary creatures that have been myths for centuries), something new in Top Sawyers Island, a new movie or cleaner film in Soarin, Life pavilion update at Epcot, Universe of Energy update, another country, Carsland, and thing from the Incredibles, Monsters Inc doors ride, an attraction about the Lost island, and updated Great Movie Ride, Andalasia etc.

The end result could be great, I just wish that they used something that I felt an emotional connection with.

I am truly surprised by all the negative responses to Avatar Land. People are talking about Avatar like it was some "little movie".

1) This Film has made $2,781,505,847 World wide. With two sequels on the way, Disney would be crazy to pass up this up. This story has appeal to Disney fans as well as non Disney fans.

2) James Cameron and crew are now "Imagineers"!, the technology and resources they bring to Disney is Very exiting. I don't think people realize how much ground breaking this film did.

3) Avatar does fit in Animal Kingdom. The story is about conservation, and the wonder of a new wild land. It is set in a lush and mystical Forest filled with wonderful creatures.

4) This is going to be great for Boys. This land opens up a whole new market to male children, and teenagers.

5) Not to mention it is also a love story. And it even has a Princess! So it also has some classic "Disney" appeal as well.

I will hold judgement until I see it. No reason to get super upset or super excited until more information is released.

No...I'm not talking about Avatar like it was a"little" movie...I'm talking about it being a MEDIOCREmovie, at best and lousy, hackneyed, ham-fisted, ridiculous and formulaic at worst.

OK, glad we cleared that up!

Those who don't like Avatar can give this a chance or just skip the area all together. We skip things that we don't like all the time - it's no big deal.

I do agree that people have the right to dislike things. It's a bit odd to me to dislike something that doesn't even exist yet though.

That's the plan.

If it's odd to dislike something it's odd to like it too.

I dislike that Disney is basing a whole area of the park around a movie franchise, whether it be Disney or not. How it turns out or what the area contains doesn't change that for me.

You can be as snarky as you want to but this doesn't fit me. I'm glad that Disney is actually planning to do something new at a mediocre park but I don't like or dislike it. I can't because I haven't seen it.

How is that being snarky? You said you found it odd people are disliking something that doesn't even exist yet. If that's odd, then logic would say it's also odd to like something that doesn't exist too. Any opinion besides "I have no opinion" would be odd.

I never said anything about how you felt about it :confused3

I thought you had when you quoted me. OK. :confused3

Disney will make this magical. They know their stuff when they put some effort into it. It being based on a movie doesn't change that. I do respect that you don't want movies in AK though.

Avatar...really? Hated the movie and really disappointed that Disney is going this route. There are so MANY other things that could be done, but they spend their (our) money like this? Sorry, but we spend quite a bit at WDW every year and this is one area that I can do without. Will probably have to suck it up to check it out (DH liked Avatar) but no thanks. I would rather see that money used for other improvements in other parks, Beastly Kingdom per se in AK, or even a 5th gate that is more geared for older kids and adults (like a Villain themed park with more thrill rides as that is one thing that WDW lacks) Guess we'll have to wait and see, but good grief! I'm afraid to ask what's next!

Not really. I'm inclined to like any big investment in the theme park until/unless it proves to be something I don't like.

That's why I go to Disney World. When I run into something I haven't experienced before, I'm inclined to like it.

If I was inclined to dislike the things I encounter there, I don't think I'd be a regular guest there or enough of a fan to post about it online.

That's why it's weird to be inclined to dislike it before experiencing it IF you're a fan of most of the things you encounter at Disney.

I was commenting on what you said about people's opinions being odd, not what your opinions are about the new land.

I have said before I don't doubt Disney can pull this off, I'm sure they can and it will be beautiful. I don't think they're going to skimp on it, especially if Cameron has a say in what happens. I'm sure they'll make some cool rides there too.

It's not that I don't want movies in AK. It's that I don't want an entire land based on one single movie franchise. I would be disappointed if this was coming to any of the 4 parks, and if it was a Disney movie as well. I'm disappointed that that's the direction they're choosing to take compared to what they've done in the past.

People are allowed to like anything they want, and they're allowed to dislike anything they want as well. It's strange to me that just because Disney is doing this you think it's weird that Disney fans aren't allowed to dislike the idea of it. :confused3

Sorry Haters! I think this is a Grand Slam Home Run for Disney! Mr Cameron is going to demand quite quite a lot of control over how this land develops....IMHO it will be awesome and instead of having its budget cut I bet it runs over as he insists on this and that to be added lol..

If it's odd to dislike something it's odd to like it too.

But it's not odd to be excited about the prospects for what it might be. The positive comments have (virtually) all been about enthusiasm for the possibilities, since none of us have any details yet.

I didn't especially care for the movie because of the story, but I still think the visuals make for some amazing possibilities. I don't imagine they're going to try to re-tell the story.

Lots of speculation on what it will be called, and how "Pandora" makes more sense than "Avatar". (Or was that in the comments on the DPB?) I think it's obvious that it will include Avatar somewhere in the name, since that's the marketing hook.

My guess is that the official name will be something convoluted like "Pandora - the World of James Cameron's Avatar", since "Pandora" is what it is, "Avatar" is the recognizable name, and Cameron will want his name on it as well. Then the fans will decide which shorthand catches on in regular conversation, just like "ExE" has become pretty wide-spread, or like the "unfortunate" shorthand for the Monsters Inc Laugh Floor.
