Auto Train trip report with pictures! Part 1

:thumbsup2 Great review and pictures were awesome! we take the train from downstate IL to Chicago and always wondered what the inside of the sleeper cars look like we see in the train yard....our dream is to go out west on the train......for now we take day trips to Chicago which isn't a bad thing either.... :woohoo: dh doesn't have enough vacation time to take it to Orlando though.happy rails !

Thanks for the great pictures! DH and I will be first time autotrain passengers this January and I'm so excited. Your pix just made it all the more real to me (and the fact that our tickets arrived yesterday). Thanks again.

We have done it twice and we loved it. Great pictures

taking from lorton to sanford oct 26 and coming back on nov6. took it for the first time last nov. now all the kids want to do is take the train. the food was great . but did not sleep much pillows way to small. bringing my own this time.only 199 days until were on the train. :cool1: :thumbsup2 :cool1: :thumbsup2

Thanks for the pics. We took the AT last Nov round trip in coach. This Nov we have a roomette (DH and myself). We slept 4-5 hours in coach so we felt fine when we got in, but we're thinking we'll sleep better in a room where there are less people moving through. We met some great people and I enjoy train travel and hate flying, so DH indulges me. The wine at dinner and a glass before bed should help me get to sleep. :drinking1

I'm a visual-type, so these photos were perfect for me! I can't wait to show this thread to my DH, who has been wondering if the AutoTrain is right for us.

I have one question: How many people could sleep in your compartment? If you all ready answered this, I apologize!

Thank you for posting easy-to-understand details and informative pictures!

I believe that our bedroom was only for two people. They also have family bedrooms, but we did not see them.

Thanks! Thisis exactly what I have been looking for! Now back to my search for coach pictures lol

These pics and posts were from almost 4 years ago but they are really cool. Thanks for finding this thread :thumbsup2

Nice pictures. I am also interested in coach pictures, if any of you guys are willing to share your pics.... We have booked our auto train tickets for this coming August.:goodvibes

Wow, just wanted to post to this to get it back on the first page. I actually just posted something yesterday asking for pics of the auto train and then went looking today and found this!!!

I'm sure the OP isn't checking it anymore, but he did an awesome job!!!

I am checking and Thank You very much :goodvibes

mike,
thanks for the pics.
we have taken autotrain coach for the last 10 years. it works for us.
even if it takes an hour to get your car, it;s no difference from waiting for luggage at the airport.
we took the regular train once, the autotrain is a much higher level of experience.

Thanks for posting these pictures and info. I have been wanting more info on the train as we are traveling on it on April 16th/17th. I just thought of checking here and found your terrific report. We are going with coach this time - hope we can get a little sleep. Looking forward to meeting some new friends on the train.

We are travelling down April 17th/18th - also coach - with 3 kids! I'm hoping it will be fun, better than a 2-day drive, and that we will not regret our decision to go with seats instead of a room. I'll try and take pics of the coach seats and such on the train, and post them when we're back.

The auto train seems more expensive than flying. (We're coming from NY.) What are the benefits of using the auto train?

Last August DH, DD7 and I took the autotrain down. We loved it - we were in coach sets - DD got a great nights rest DH stayed up working on his laptop most of the night (thank goodness there are outlets at every seat) and I tossed and turned a bit (but mostly because DD was all over me). We found that it was less expensive than flying SW from Long Island (we saved about $300). We also had our car with us which was great! The earlier you book the better your rates and unlike airfare they are fully refundable tickets (no vouchers or paying more for refundable tickets). We actually felt rested and enjoyed our first day of vacation. We found the train to be clean, the people friendly, the seats as comfortable as airplane first class seats, and the entire journey an adventure. We are booking again for this summer...the train also happened to arrive early on both ends of the trip - so I have only good things to say about it =)

Last time we took the AutoTrain was 2007, loved it, BUT, we came home on Saturday, arriving on Monday, no problems, the Sunday train was cancelled and the Saturday southbound train was delayed for Hours.

Remember train travel is part of the experience, not just transportation.
