August 2014 Car Rental Deal Watch!

Rates at Costco are lower for Alamo today. Well, lower than they've been but still not great by any means. At least there has finally been a move in Alamo's pricing there, given more time we'll see the deals for them roll in.

Costco did drop quite a bit. Not where I'd like to see it but a good sign. Still waiting to see that 3 or 4 days of oh yeah gotta have that rate we have seen in the past.

Oooooh, you're right :thumbsup2 . Just checked Alamo directly (not via Costco) and the Alamo rates for our dates are now lower than the current National rates with KLM for a mid-size SUV. Still not as low as the KLM rate with National that I locked in at a few weeks back, but moving in the right direction. Time to watch that one daily, I think! ::yes::

Hi;

Yes, my Alamo rates for a Fullsize, for 9 days: Aug 24 - Sept 02, have dropped from $380 to $285 (using Alamo Insider discount) - This is the cheapest I have seen...

Thanks,

My Alamo rate hasn't come down much at all. I have a better deal at National with my husband's corporate code and the Entertainment coupon. Not sure if everyone saw or not but as of June 16th, Alamo is getting rid of the "additional driver for free" perk of being an Insider.

We're getting closer by the day-let's hope these rates come down soon!

yeah, I got that email too. In a way I didn't care because my best Alamo rates have always come through using Costco's website and they give you a 2nd driver free... I guess it's a nice back-up to have had but oh well, what else is new in a way, prices stay the same for things but they find ways to give you less for your money everywhere and this is yet another example.

For Costco, do you need to have a membership to book? Will they check for Costco membership at pickup/checkout?

Thanks.

Yes, you need a Costco membership to reserve a car. They ask for the card number during booking, I believe.

I just checked my Dollar rental, and I just saved $80! I now have a standard rental for 10 days, for 308 out the door. Lowest I have seen in weeks! Gonna keep an eye out

Rental is fro 8/20 to 8/30

Yes, you need a valid costco membership number to book on their website. I've never had them ask for it once at Alamo, Avis etc.

Alamo for our dates has been holding steady right around the $700 mark for the last while. That's for a mid-size SUV.

Our National rate with the KLM code was locked in on the 3rd of April for $466.67 (including the $25 discount for the Entertainment Book coupon). Current rates with the same code and coupon are $795 :scared1: .

Maybe my National rate will be as good as it gets.

I will also get Ebates back for the rental.....6%, I think?

I did not even think about Ebates! National today just shows 2.5% but that is better than nothing. Thanks for the tip!

My Alamo rate for a standard dropped from $542.65 to $387.62. :cool1:

Still not where I want it to be a we're chipping away. :thumbsup2

No cash back from EBATES for National if you use any contract code not "directly" given to you by EBATES.

You have to be careful with EBATES. Using a contract code (such as KLM) automatically kills any rebate from EBATES

From the EBATES Web site, under National Car Rental (Special Terms: Cash Back is not available on orders using corporate discounts.)

Normally, it is a no-brainer, you do better with the contract ID.

Most of the other car rentals I have seen are the same. IF you use a promo code that you did NOT get directly from the EBATES site, you get no rebate.

As an aside, I just did one of my major twice a year orders from Puritan's Pride vitamins. Through Ebates, I would have received some sort of special promo coupon, as well as the "percent off" EBATES rebates.

However, by buying outside of EBATES, using an offer I easily found on the Web, but could not use through EBATES, I saved about $22 by not using EBATES -- that is taking into account the EBATES coupon, rebate, etc.

Again, EBATES CAN be great, but not always.

Its not a big deal to me either way.

As far as current rates go, the KLM code is saving me a bundle. If it negates my ebates entitlement, it won't cause me any grief.

I am MUCH more concerned with getting a better overall rental rate than the piddly cash back that the ebates amounts to. It would have been a happy bonus, nothing more.

Edited to add....the ebates Canada site does not show the same corporate code exclusion that the US site lists. The ebates.ca site simply notes:

Special Conditions for National Car Rental

Non Reward : Cash Back may not appear in your Ebates account until up to 40 days after travel has been completed.

Just did not want to work up any expectations for people who are expecting EBATES and then not getting it.

Hope the Canada thing works. Indeed, if it does, post something back here after you get the check, I can navigate in French/Canadian :thumbsup2

But, going through their T/C's on the Canadian site, it also says that if a discount number is not provided by EBATES, you "may" not receive a rebate. After all, National is looking to keep every penny, and EBATES is looking to take every penny, so not surprised.

The Ebates Canada site is in English.

I would be happy to report back after I confirm if I receive ebates credit following the conclusion of my rental, but 40 days after would put it to mid-October. I am guessing most of the August folks will be onto other things by then.

Just checking in to our little group here to find out if anything is new? Anyone find anything? Are you counting down to your trip? I am! We have 82 more days! It's getting there!

You bet your boots we're counting down! ::yes:: 91 days for us!

Nothing new for my dates as far as car rentals go. Alamo is still $708. Dollar is $684. National is $825 with the KLM code, $963 :scared1: without.

So far, nothing has been able to beat the $467 booked with National in April using the KLM discount and Entertainment Book coupon. But I'm still waiting popcorn:: . And checking :surfweb: .

Alamo is UP today to over $900 for our dates. National is down a smidge to $770 using the KLM discount (without the Entertainment Book coupon).

88 days to go! popcorn::
