August 2014 Car Rental Deal Watch!

That's a pretty good rate! Especially for Alamo! Good job!

Thanks, though just pointing out that was last year, for each trip... $22 per day all in. I looked at old emails, the year before, 2012, I paid $21 per day all in for a full size from Alamo.

So I'm willing to bet we will see prices drop for Alamo given more time. No way they are staying where they are at now, which has been the same for days, weeks and months.

I agree. This will be our third end-of-August trip, and our fifth trip renting a vehicle. Other than the year we travelled during Christmas week (which is a whole different ballgame in itself), the process has been almost identical. Get something somewhat reasonable months out, then watch prices climb to the ridiculous, then see them drop like a stone between 4-6 weeks out. Like Parad0x mentioned, Alamo has always come out the winner (the Christmas trip excepted).

So I have hope :) even if I am a little short on patience :rotfl: . National's KLM rates have gone WAY up since we re-booked at the lower rate a month or so ago, so I am hoping the steady decline is not far away. I find it an entertaining way to spend the last few moments before we travel. It helps time pass!

Just found a full size at Budget for 9 days for $299 using CarRentalSavers.com. I still have my KLM rate for $261, but its been a while since I've seen anything that low. Hoping the prices will start dropping soon. Last year I paid way less!

Can I ask how some of you have used the KLM code AND an Entertainment coupon? The Entertainment coupons I have include a contract ID AND a coupon code. Just curious! Thanks!

I used the KLM code in the "contract ID" section, and the entertainment coupon in the "coupon ID" section. It accepted that combination with no problem :thumbsup2 .

Got it! Thanks, Gina!!! Got a decent rate that was comparable to what I booked with Budget. I'm happy because I wanted National or Alamo!

I agree :thumbsup2 . Its so nice being able to select your own vehicle!!

Budget is our only "never again" agency.....we gave them a shot back in December 2012 with abysmal results. Unfortunately we are once bitten, twice shy....and Budget is hereby off our list.

This site has plenty of discount codes for use with plenty of different car rental agencies. Unfortunately, most only go till the end of June for now. There are some though that go to mid August. We are going again this year at the end of August (21st - 29th). I'll be sure to publish any deals I find. So far, best is $197 for compact at National with the KLM code.

Joining the queue for the August deal watch!

So far the best that I could find for our week is 227.72 for Budget via BJs (econo compact). I haven't booked anything yet, just watching for now.

Thanks, Gina!

ETA: I just went on to carrentalsavers.com to look up cars for a random 9 days at the end of May early June. Man, the rates were incredible! Under 200 for Alamo! We just need to get closer-I can sense we're all going to save money!

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever used E-Z Rent-a-car? $258 for 8 days (full size) - I have never heard of them but write ups looked okay - they were cheaper than Hertz/National/enterprise - (also have never rented from anyone other than Hertz/national/enterprise).

Thanks in advance for any comments on E-Z.

I checked my dates for Dollar last night, and now they are not even showing the "city special" anymore....very strange! It was worth giving it a look, though.

I would think that we mid-August travellers will see some decline in rates within the next month. We're under the 100 day mark, woot!

I'm a newbie at the car rental game. When folks mention re-booking what do you do? Do you modify an existing reservation or book a whole new one? Call the company I booked with?

Thanks in advance.

If you book directly through a rental companies website, you can cancel that reservation and rebook with a better deal. As long as you don't select the prepay or pay now option. You also can not cancel and rebook through most third-party companies like expedia or travelocity.

Rates at Costco are lower for Alamo today. Well, lower than they've been but still not great by any means. At least there has finally been a move in Alamo's pricing there, given more time we'll see the deals for them roll in.

As to the re-booking question. If you book directly through the companies or Costco's website you can book something that you see that's decent just to have it. Then you can make another reservation when you see a better deal and cancel the original reservation afterwards. This is as long as you don't book one of those rates where you pay up front and it's non refundable if you decide to cancel. I don't like them... I did hotwire once, maybe twice years and years ago. With them you're stuck once you book it. What I thought was a good price was ok, but after booking sure enough I could have saved maybe another $20-$40 had I just waited and kept watching costco etc day to day.
