August 2012 Car Rental Thread

Do you need to show anything at pick up to qualify for these rates?

Insider membership, but that's free to sign up at the Alamo site. The $35 coupon has been publicly posted everywhere. I believe it's an AA frequent flyer program code, so you could sign up for that too if you want to be safe. Seriously, I doubt they would ask for the coupon.

ETA: From Mousesavers:
American Airlines AAdvantage members (frequent flyer program, FREE to join) can get $35 off weekly rentals of any size car in the US, Latin America or Caribbean. Go to the Alamo website and use the coupon code AD2359FDF when booking. No physical coupon required. A Saturday night keep is required. Valid on rentals through 12/31/12. Thanks to Tom for info.

What am I doing wrong that I can't find good deals? We are using Sanford, but if I plug MCO to my dates (8/2-8/9) and it's even higher. I'm getting before taxes $224 for economy at sanford and MCO was $279. I used insider code and the $35 off coupon. I would like to get it under $200 at least.

For that week, right now Dollar Special City rates are best. For your dates, it's $215 all-in for Sanford and $205 all-in for MCO for a compact. No codes needed. Just go to Dollar site and when you get the list of cars, click on the green "Check for City Special".

Plugging your date/time into Alamo gets $184 for full size with a free additional driver. Just use Insiders code (7015135) and $35 coupon (AD2359FDF). If you don't need the additional driver, use the AMEX code (7014291) with that coupon and the total comes down to $174.

Maybe try booking a standard because you will automatically get a full sized car. Alamo doesn't have a standard row. :thumbsup2

Correct! and last year there was a Ford Edge SUV parked in the full size row that we gladly took! (There were a few mini vans as well, but I certainly wouldn't count on it!)

ah that would be nice. I'm happy with the standard size though (probably could have gone midsize) so anything larger will be a big bonus.

I know!!:( Were renting out of Tampa on the 18th too. If you find a good rate let me know....if I find a good rate (been checking almost everyday) I'll be sure to post!:thumbsup2 I do think it will come down more when the date gets closer but it doesn't look like we will get the low rates that people are getting out of MCO.

Yes, if you do please post. We're coming in to Tampa as well. Fingers crossed.

Finally was able to get a great deal for $149 ($10.50/day) august 25-sept 1, for an intermediate size car from sixt. Everywhere we were looking was atleast $400+ since we are under 25 (just one more year left :cool1:). We were looking between hertz (who waives the fee) or Sixt (which doesn't have a fee).

I used the KLM code that several people have posted and the $30 coupon code and it dropped my reservation from $420 to $319 all in. My dates are 8/22-9/2 with Emerald Isle service!

My question is.... Why does the KLM code basically remove all the taxes and fees? How is that possible? Will there be surprise charges when I return the car?

Well I just lowered my rate with Alamo for a minivan for 10 days in Aug from $513.00 to 432.90!!:cool1:

This was using my insiders ID and the AA code AD2359FDF

Just wanted to remind you to check your rates in the early Am!:hippie:

PLEASE REPLY!
I'm on the costco site and my rate is a little lower at 420. I have NEVER booked on the costco site before. Can I cancel if I find a lower rate?

: How do I cancel or change my car rental reservation? Will I be charged any fees?

You can cancel your reservation online at Costcotravel.com by logging in and selecting “Your Account,” or by calling the car company directly. If you want to change a reservation, it is recommended that you cancel your current reservation and book a new one. Typically, car rental companies do not charge to cancel a booking unless you have booked a prepay promotional rate (currently not available on Costcotravel.com).
Cancelling your car reservation is quick and simple:

Log in to your Costco Travel account.
Your account profile will show the order number, description and departure date of your reservation.
Select the order number you wish to cancel.
Click “Cancel Booking.”
A pop-up message will ask if you wish to cancel this rental car reservation. Click “Yes.”
You will then be returned to your account profile where the cancelled reservation will no longer appear.

I'm down to $101.00 for an economy car for a week through Alamo. I used the Insider $35 coupon and they gave me an additional $10 for what I don't know.

Pretty good deal and might just force me to rent a car even though we are at the Beach Club and don't totally need it.

When you log in as in Insider you get a certain percentage discount which is likely the extra $10 off you are seeing.
Then the coupon is on top of it and represents the $35 off.

I got the same $10 discount today. We were going to go with a minivan from Budget but decided that our family of 5 could survive in a full size.

I booked Alamo with my passholders discount and the $35 coupon Aug 17-24 and got $118 with taxes

:banana:EVEN LOWER!

Using the AMEX code 7014291 and insiders Id my 10 day minivan came down to $409!:hyper:

Both the dh and I are insiders members so according to mousesavers the additional driver is free!!

I feel like a day trader! Who knows maybe I will get to my target number of $199:yay:

Alamo the 18 - 26th with AA code is $267 total for minivan. Need to check this morning for your rates, they look low this morning.

Our Alamo rate came down. We are renting from Aug 25 ~ Sep 3. I originally reserved midsize for $200 and now I reserved Standard for $165. I used insiders and AA code AD2359FDF which gives you $35 off.

Hopefully, it will come down a little more since last year, we rented Premium for $67 for whole week.

The prices actually have gone up for my dates 8/30-9/9 not by much, but I'm using every code out there to try get my rate down a little more but not having any luck yet

I tried all these codes, but apparently they are not valid for one way one day rates :( the prices actually went UP by 20% with budget!!!

I ended up with a full size for $34 a day with the pay it now option.
