Atlantis waterpark with foot issues?

I have plantar fasciitis. I do pretty well with my orthotic inserts. I had been considering on our upcoming cruise to go to the water park in Atlantis because it looks so cool.
But then I thought...I cant go barefoot.
Are there any really good supportive water shoes/sandles that might work for me? Or should I scrap the idea?

Patty

I have it too. In fact, I've had extensive surgery on one foot for it.

I have a pair of KEEN water sandals that are very supportive and comfortable.
I spent about an hour and a half the other day at DSW trying on every single pair of flip flops they had, and none of them seemed to work for me, so I'm sticking to my KEEN's.
Look for their website online, and you might be able to find a store near you. I've found that they run pretty true to size.

I also am battling PF.....what a pain...literally!!! I recently received an injection from my Pod. right into my heel and he also gave me a strap that I wear around the arch of my foot (attaches around with velcro). It has a thicker portion (like a bump out) that fits into my arch that helps support it. I find that out of all my flip flops the Croc flip flops feel the best and the strap fits with that flip flop very easily.

Good luck!!!

OMG, I was going to post the same thing. I've had the surgery on both feet due to PF. I can't go barefoot and won't. I have prescriptive orthotics. I found Keen's to be pure heaven. I have the Newport H2O. I can actually wear them in and out of the water. I wear them all over CC and excursions. We go to all inclusives during the year and I can wear my Keen's there, too. I LOVE THEM. At night I do find getting back into my orthotics soothing tho .MJ, I pray that you don't need the surgery. I went through what you are now and it didn't work for me.

Anyone tried Orthaheel shoes? I need arch support and some stability mostly. Sorry for all you people with constant foot pain. Glad you folks aren't letting your foot problems stop you from having fun.

I just got my Foot Smart catalog today and saw those on the front page. I just hate the idea of not being able to try them on for a while before buying.
Sometimes the shoes/sandals that have any extra cushioning in the heel are MORE irritating than if they didn't have it.

I had surgery on the left side, and was supposed to then do the right side, but there is NO WAY that I'll go through that again. I had no idea what the full surgery involved.....he cut my calf muscle, drilled holes in the bone in my heel, along with snipping the plantar fascia.....it was awful.
And no, the shots in the heel didn't work for me either. Well, actually, the first time they did them in each foot worked for quite a while. Subsequent shots never helped.

Hey Stacey- I love that catalog. Who knew there were so many products for the feet! :rotfl2:

My Dad's a diabetic, and I order him a lot of things from there....his feet are a real problem for him.

Went and tried on some Orthoheel thongs. They didn't have my size in other styles. They have strong arch and heel support. Not the most comfortable to me but I don't need a ton of support. Ended up buy some very cute (and expensive) sandals. I'll have the best dressed feet on the cruise. LOL

Rolfing has seemingly cured my PF, but I never go barefoot and I also swear by my Keen Newports for watersports/hanging at the beach!

Good luck!

Rolfing is deep tissue massage, working the fascia itself and loosening any adhesions/stuckness so that you can move easier and stand straighter - kind of like chiropractic, but working the fascia instead of the bones.

Ida Rolf was the "founder" of it - thus the odd name.

It hurts like &%^$&*% usually (a colleague of mine calls it "a joyful pain"), but feels so much better after it's done and has made a world of difference for me, especially my feet. I have been PF-free for several years now, after a few sessions of rolfing, and can even wear mostly "normal" shoes (but still don't like to go barefoot for very long, even at home).

I should mention that I did go to a podiatrist for months after living with PF on and off for a few years. I did the ice, nighttime "boots," Aleve, orthotics, etc. etc. and after a few months, it was back. That's when I remembered another Rolfer had given me some relief a few years before and went to a different Rolfer who was closer to where I live now, and after a few sessions, the PF was gone - and I had better posture and other problems were going away. I haven't been in over a year (I miss it), but went faithfully every few weeks for 3-5 years, even though my insurance won't pay for it.

Try www.rolf.org for more info.

Good luck!

I have had PF for 8 years now. It has gotten better over time with the use of a night splint, and motrin and ice at the slightest onset of pain and always wearing shoes with orthotics or very strong arch support - birkenstock, dansko, etc... I have custom made birkenstocks that I wear when at a beach or pool. As soon as I'm out of the water, I dry my feet and put them back on.

My daughter has an obscure tendon problem that is aggravated if she doesn't have proper arch support. We've learned how to tape her arches with water proof tape for athletics and the pool. Our Podiatrist referred us to an athletic trainer for this. The tape works so well, that she tapes her arches daily in addition to using orthotics. I'm not sure how well the taping woudl work for PF but it is a thought.

I too had PF for about 4 years. I tried everything except surgery including shockwave therapy, which was increadably painful, the person who did it used no anastesia (sp?) Anyway I finally went to a chiropractor who did what another poster called rolfing. He dug into the arch area and expecially the heel area and it really hurt but it was only for a minute or 2 at a visit. Took a few weeks but eventually I was pain free. Still have issues with long term standing in bare feet so if I can't wear my sneakers, I tape the arch. There is also a type of tape called kinesio tape which flexes and works great. Find a chiropractor or athletic trainer in your area who can show you how to do the taping. You can also work on your PF with a golf ball. Put it on the floor and rub your foot over it, really work it so it hurts, then ice it! Good luck!

I will wear my Keens into the water if I'm going to be standing for a while and need the support or if I think the surface I'll be on might annoy my feet (too rocky or rough). I've worn them into the ocean and into the pool.:thumbsup2 Or I take them off once I get to the water but can put them on when I'm still dripping and it doesn't matter if they get wet.

But I also wear them around in the summer, even if I'm not going into the water.
